I want to reiterate that a society governed by scientists really is the ideal social structure!

Lloyd Hawthorne was a leader of Hawthorne Medical Laboratories, as well as the first overseer of Vault 4 in the Fallout TV series.

Background[]

He was a Vault-Tec scientist, later overseer, specializing in the effects of radiation on human DNA. He, his family, and eighty volunteers participated in a five-year-long trial run of Vault 4 before the Great War. After the war, he and his wife Cassandra took shelter in Vault 4, where he served as Overseer of the Vault and conducted cruel human experiments, including hybridizing humans with radiation-resistant animals and creating gulpers.

At least several years after the Vault was sealed, the test subjects of Vault 4 revolted against the Vault scientists, which led to his death.

The Trap[]

Before the war, Hawthorne and his family appeared in a Vault-Tec commercial alongside Cooper Howard where he and his wife explained that they would be staying in the vault for a five-year trial period of the vault before the war.

He and his wife also attended the wrap party at Cooper Howard's home alongside Bud Askins.

The Radio[]

In 2296, Lucy was shown a holotape recording of Overseer Hawthorne's death alongside his wife in a room barricaded against a gulper that the revolting test subjects that Hawthorne and the Vault 4 scientists had been experimenting on released. In his final moments, he was unapologetic, insisting that, despite the failure of Vault 4's experiment, a society governed by scientists is "the ideal social structure" and that hybridizing humans with animals "still has potential" before a gulper killed him that the residents unleashed.
