People get killed in Filly all the time. That's where my daddy got killed. Couple brothers. Had an aunt as well, she got killed there once.— The farmer explains his family situation

The farmer is a denizen living just outside Filly in the Fallout TV series.

Background[]

This man is an average denizen of the wasteland, trying to make a living on a homestead in the middle of the desert near Los Angeles in 2296. He once shared the home with his relatives (a father, a "couple of brothers," and an aunt), but they all died in various incidents during visits to the nearby settlement of Filly, leaving him alone.

The Target[]

This could all be yours!— Offering his house to Lucy MacLean

Lucy MacLean meets the farmer early on in her journey through the wastes. The farmer, who is struggling with a water filter outside his house, initially mistakes her for a robber, since she is pointing her tranquilizer gun at him, but she soon puts it away when he does not appear to be hostile. Lucy asks the farmer about what he is doing, and he replies that he is trying to fix his water filter since he is putting sand in and only getting sand out (not realizing what he is missing). Lucy tells him to try putting water in the filter and offers him a bottle of purified water. She is taken aback when the farmer drinks the entire bottle; he tells her it is common sense to drink clean water in the wasteland, even if one is not thirsty.

Lucy asks the farmer if he has seen Lee Moldaver's group, which he hasn't. He asks if she is trying to go to Filly, saying that he has never been there himself because it is too dangerous. He tries to persuade Lucy to stay with him, saying having a family would help with the farmwork. He tries to convince her some more as she leaves, claiming he is sick and will soon die so Lucy will not have to deal with him for very long and that she could inherit his farm. He also thanks Lucy for not shooting him.[2]

Appearances[]

This farmer appears in the Fallout TV series episode "The Target".

Behind the scenes[]

"Loser" from Fallout
  • In his review of the TV series, Fallout original creator Tim Cain said that the farmer looked "straight out of Fallout", noting his resemblance to some of the village characters in the original game.[3] "I swear he was walking just like the 'loser' villagers in the first game. They were called villagers but the internal name for that animation was called the 'loser'."[4] The name for the animation sprites for these characters, found in the game files, is "NMLOSR", while dialogue and script files for Shady Sands peasants were LOSER.MSG and LOSER.INT.
  • When asked by Cain, showrunner Graham Wagner replied that he did not know whether this was an intended homage to the original game, but that many actors were Fallout fans themselves and that the character's posture was improvised by actor Michael Abbott Jr. on the set.[4]
