You know, my mom used to...— Roger's last words

Roger is a ghoul residing in New California in the Fallout TV series.

Background[]

A ghoul who lived before the Great War, by 2296, Roger is on the verge of becoming feral and mentions that he has been showing symptoms of it for 28 years up to that point (at least since 2268).

He knows the Ghoul as a friend and mentions he has had problems in the past with human "smoothies" being prejudiced against him.[1]

The Ghouls[]

The Ghoul encounters Roger again while the bounty hunter is marching his captive Lucy MacLean through the desert outside of Los Angeles. Unable to resist his worsening symptoms of turning feral, Roger was forced to give up on finding Siggi Wilzig for the bounty and had to squat in the Westside Medical Clinic.

Out of desperation, he asks the Ghoul if he can share any of his drug vials to slow the effects, but the Ghoul admits he does not have any, having lost his entire stash during the fight with a gulper. Unperturbed, Roger continues fighting his fits of feral gnashing to warn the Ghoul and Lucy to leave "before things get ugly."

The Ghoul offers Roger some respite by reminding him of his memories of food and the pre-War days: they fondly discuss BlamCo Mac & Cheese, ice cream, and apple pie. Roger briefly comes out of his craze and begins to tell Lucy about his mother before being shot and killed mid-sentence by the Ghoul, putting him out of his misery, after which the Ghoul proceeds to cannibalize his corpse for "ass jerky."[1]

Appearances[]

Roger appears only in the Fallout TV series episode "The Ghouls."

Behind the scenes[]

In an interview from January 2024, prior to the release of the series, executive producer Jonathan Nolan alluded to Roger by saying "We've seen a lot of zombie shows and a lot of zombie movies. You haven't seen a lot where there's a zombie named 'Fred' who likes mac and cheese and misses his mom." While the character is misnamed as Fred, Roger is a ghoul who does mention BlamCo Mac & Cheese and his mother, which appears to align with Nolan's quote.[2]

"But like the games, the show doesn’t aim to depress. In a gonzo world of giant scorpions and Forbidden Planet-style robots, it’s the human element that should shine through. Specifically, from those that seem the least human of all: ghouls. “They’re almost poignantly humanized. We’ve seen a lot of zombie shows and a lot of zombie movies. You haven’t seen a lot where there’s a zombie named ‘Fred’ who likes mac and cheese and misses his mom,” Nolan explains."
