The Trench is a district of the Pitt. It is connected to the Sanctum.

Background[]

The Trench is an area primarily consisting of industrial ruins - including the Pittsburgh Union Railroad train depot, which is currently occupied by the Pittsburgh Union, as well as the Abraxodyne Chemical Complex, occupied by the Fanatics. The only way through to the Sanctum is through underground tunnels leading from the Trench, as the surface is covered in radioactive chemical waste.[1]

The ruins and chemical waste in the Trench are likely due to waste byproduct from Abraxodyne Chemical's prototype PID 31148 - industrial grade drain cleaner.[2] The drain cleaner was produced without devising a way to treat the waste byproduct,[3][4] and after at least three railway employees became sick due to the chemical,[5][6] the Pittsburgh Union Railroad refused to transport the waste out of the area,[7] leaving Abraxodyne Chemical to begin stockpiling it in their own warehouse[8][9] before illegally dumping it nearby.[10] In addition, exposure to radiation causes the byproduct to expand in size,[11] and even before the Great War, it was feared that the waste had the potential to devastate entire city blocks.[12]

The Trench[]

Appearances[]

The Trench appears only in Fallout 76, introduced in the Expeditions: The Pitt update.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Multiple developers worked on the design of the Trench, including, but not limited to, world artist Russell Rector[Non-game 1] and level designer Matt Thomas.[Non-game 2]
  • According to Matt Thomas, the design of the Trench and its surrounding factory areas took inspiration from the real-world H. J. Heinz Company complex in Pittsburgh's Troy Hill neighborhood. Although it is not an exact recreation, nor is any other iconography of the complex referenced, the area was a point of reference during the design process.[Non-game 3]

  1. Danilo: "You made it. When you're ready, we need to head underground. It's the only way in or out of the Sanctum. Everything else is untraversable. The Sanctum itself - the cathedral - it's crawling with Fanatics. Them, and the unfortunate victims they're holding hostage. Sorry to say it's not going to be any more pleasant down there than it is up here. Let me know when you've steeled yourself."
Vault Dweller: "There's really no other way to the Sanctum?"
Danilo: "Not unless you're already a ghoul and don't mind swimming through a sea of chemical waste. I know the Trench. It's impossible."

"Didn't come up in the video, so here's a little KO exclusive. The Trench for 76's "Expeditions" feature was a heightened, thematic reference to the real life Pittsburgh Heinz Complex. Doesn't match the layout or have any specific iconography, but it was a constant point of reference during the design process."
