East Mountain lookout is a location in the Savage Divide region of Appalachia. It is situated northwest of Kerwood Mine and east of US-13C Bivouac.

Background[]

This pre-War lookout tower was settled by two civilians, Gerald and Sandy, who had survived the war. Despite the chaos occurring all around them, the two lived in relative peace, setting up planters for farming and planting flowers. Their lives continued like this for four years before Gerald woke up one day to find that Sandy had died. Gerald soon followed, opting to die in bed by her side.[1]

The tower remained abandoned for many years afterwards, up through 2102.[2] Sometime in 2103, when people began to return to Appalachia, the tower was repurposed by a group of "scavengers" as a meeting point for them to arrange robberies and split loot. After raiding a caravan, the scavengers hid their loot in Kerwood Mine. The scavengers used a makeshift terminal to record their plans, and attempted but failed to delete their records (due to poor spelling causing a syntax error).[3] By later that year, the scavengers left, after which the tower was discovered by the Settlers of Foundation. Subsequently, several settler guards including Mike Tiller went to the tower to test several Hellstorm missile launchers they had purchased. However, Mike accidentally killed his friends by picking up a launcher improperly, causing a misfire.[4] He panicked and fled to Kerwood Mine, feeling guilty about his actions.

Layout[]

In front of the tower is a blackened blast crater with a set of gibbed human remains in the center. Three settler corpses can be found scattered around the west edge of the crater. Two opossums can be reliably found wandering around this area. Heading north towards the tower, there are some small sandbag fortifications with Brotherhood metal crates around them. The tower has an explosives crate, a port-a-potty, and a terminal at its base.

Planters containing an assortment of Appalachian flora, including melons, tatos, carrots, and corn, line the stairs up the tower as well as the tower balcony and can be harvested for their contents. A cooler is near the melon planter. Bottle lamps are used to light the tower and can be found all along the stairs and hanging in the room.

The top of the tower has a cooking station and a locked footlocker (Picklock 1), while a duffle bag is on the balcony. Prior to Steel Dawn,[verification needed] an additional cooking station was outside on the balcony, and the corpses of Gerald and Sandy could be found in the bed.
