The Core, also known as the Crater Core, is a location within the Crater in the Toxic Valley region of Appalachia.
Layout[]
The Crater Core is the remains of the center of the crashed Valiant-1 space station. Before crashing, the space station resembled a wheel; the hub and spokes of that wheel form the upper level of the Core. Meg Groberg can be found in the center hub, while Gail, Ra-Ra, Caleb Fisher, and Johnny Weston can be found wandering around their rooms in the spokes of the Core. A central spiral staircase leads down to a den of excavated rooms. Surge, Barb, Lev, and the raider punk can be found in this area. Lou will also return to this area after the quest Cheating Death is completed.
Surge, Lev, and Fisher will leave once From Russia With Lev is started. Weasel and Mortimer will inhabit the area following the completion of Secrets Revealed, although Weasel will only appear if the raiders version of the quest is completed while Mortimer will appear regardless.
The raiders salvaged some kind of large projector or transmitter from the wreckage, which Caleb called the "Space Beam," and Munch called the "Angel Piss project."[1]
Notable loot[]
- Lou's goodbye note - Note, can be found on a table in Lou's room in the Crater only during Cheating Death.
- Lit cigar in an ashtray on a desk, in the tube to the right of the gold press machine.
- A lead at last - Given by Oscar Gonzalez after starting the quest Hells Eagles.
Notes[]
- A number of details at this location seem to relate to the Cult of the Mothman.
- A partially-buried art deco sculpture can be seen here, wrapped in roots. No text or dialogue acknowledges it.
- The only taxidermied mothman in the game is found in Meg's quarters.
- Meg has no obvious affiliation with the occult, and the Core is full of animal remains in general.
- A set of whale bones is displayed above the gold press machine in the style typical to Mothman shrines.
- Munch identifies the bones as belonging to a whale.[2]
- Outside, a set of whale bones is laid out atop Ae-Ri's workspace.
- The symmetrical human chandelier seen here is typical of cult architecture, especially as seen at Clancy Manor.
- An owl shooting target can be found in the basement, identical to one seen in Point Pleasant. The cult often incorporate pre-War owl knick-knacks in their shrines.
- Creed, an NPC within the Core, mentions that the Cult of the Mothman sees the Raiders' turf as their rightful holy land.[3]
- There was no obvious indication of cult activity at the original version of the crashed space station. A small abandoned shrine ravaged by plant growth could be found to the south, but the site has since disappeared.

I'm not sure what sort of work they were doing up on the space station, but I dug into some of the surviving documents.
This thing they were building. It's not like anything I've seen before. Is it communications? A weapon? I don't know. There's a lot of missing information.
I've decided to call it the "Space Beam," for lack of better words. Munch wanted to call it the "Angel Piss Project," of course, but I quickly put an end to that.
