I know it's a ruined wasteland filled with a hundred things that want to eat you. It's better this way. Less noise, less fuss. Just echoes. In time, nature takes it all back. One day, nobody will know there was ever a city here. But in the short term, well, you've got the train station with the robot who can sell you supplies, and south of that, the train yard might be good for salvage. And of course, Morgantown's just across the river. Probably lots of useful stuff over there, if you can survive.

Dontrelle Haines is a terminally-ill man living in the Morgantown Airport terminal in Appalachia.

Background[]

Before the Great War, Dontrelle served as a medic in the United States Army.[1] He used to live in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dontrelle spends his time in the Morgantown Airport terminal where he mourns the death of his younger brother, Marcus, who was a member of the Responders and died fighting the Scorched.[2] Dontrelle suffers from radiation-induced cancer, and as such does not fear the Scorched near the airport, knowing that it will not be long before the cancer takes him anyway.[1] He stays in the airport terminal because when he dies, his body and spirit will not be far from his brother.[3]

Final Departure

Other interactions[]

  • Dontrelle is found in the Responders' command post where the Overseer's cache containing her Morgantown log entry is found either during, before, or after Final Departure. If asked about who he is and how he is suffering from cancer caused by the radiation from the nuclear fallout of the Great War, using a Charisma +4 check on him results in him offering some items he will not need anymore since he will die from the cancer soon enough. He can also be asked some questions about Appalachia,[4] his late brother[3] and the Responders[5] before being allowed to return to maintaining the shrine he put together for the Responders, especially Maria, while he waits to die from the cancer so he can be with his brother again.
  • Additionally, if one passes an Intelligence 4+ check and says that he will not need his supplies, Dontrelle will quote the Bible and give the player character three RadAways, as they "won't do [him] much good now."[6]

Inventory[]

Apparel Weapon Other items
Farmhand clothes

Notes[]

Because the Maria's last words holotape is tied to the quest Final Departure, it will disappear if it is not taken during the quest. However, Dontrelle will still mention the holotape when asked about the Responders; even if the holotape is not on the map table, he will say that it is.[5]

Appearances[]

Dontrelle Haines appears in Fallout 76, introduced in the Wastelanders update.

  1. 1.0 1.1 Vault Dweller: "You have cancer?"
Dontrelle Haines: "Pretty sure. Can't exactly get a hospital visit to check, but I was a medic in the army once, so I know a thing or two about it. Got to figure it's the radiation. Plenty of that still around. It's just as well. My time is coming, and I've made peace with it."

  2. Vault Dweller: "You mentioned a brother?"
Dontrelle Haines: "Marcus. Five years younger than me, star running back in high school, and handsome, too. Had all the ladies chasing him. He followed me into the army and became an MP, then got out and moved to Morgantown. Signed up with the police. Back then, I was still living in Cincinnati. We'd talk on the radio. He tried to get me to come out here and join the Responders more than once. I do miss him."

  3. 3.0 3.1 Vault Dweller: "This place is dangerous. Why do you stay here?"
Dontrelle Haines: "Well, I don't figure it matters much how dangerous this place is. If one of those mutants doesn't get me, the cancer will. But I guess what keeps me here is just knowing this is where my brother died. Call me a superstitious old fool, but I don't want my spirit to have to walk too far to find his."
    (Dontrelle Haines' dialogue)
  4. Vault Dweller: "What do you know about this area?"
Dontrelle Haines: "I know it's a ruined wasteland filled with a hundred things that want to eat you. It's better this way. Less noise, less fuss. Just echoes. In time, nature takes it all back. 5. 5.0 5.1 Vault Dweller: "Tell me more about the Responders."
Dontrelle Haines: "They used to be cops, firefighters, medics. Marcus always made them sound like good folk. They looked after other people as best they could. This was their base, far as I can tell. They got overrun by those things out in the halls. Found a few bodies in here and set up a little memorial. There was a lady named Chavez. Got a holotape she made on that map table. Last words, by the sound of it. I ain't been here that long, so that's about all I know."
    (Dontrelle Haines' dialogue)
  6. Vault Dweller: "[Intelligence 4+] If you're on borrowed time, it seems only reasonable to give me your supplies."
Dontrelle Haines: "For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. I believe that's first Timothy, chapter six, verse seven. The good book has brought me comfort these past few years. Maybe I can give you something that'll do the same. This is supposed to help with radiation. Won't do me much good now, so here, you take it."
