The only thing good about them was they gave supplies to weaklings and made it easier for raiders to steal. Society is gone. If you can't change with the times, then the rest of us will pick you off one by one. Or I guess in the case of the Christmas Flood, over a thousand at a time.

Gnash is an independent raider found living in an outdoors shack in Charleston in Appalachia, met in Fallout 76.

Background[]

A textbook example of a psychopathic raider, Gnash originally came to Appalachia with Meg Groberg's raiders, who settled down at the Crater. As a fan of pillaging and murder, he became disappointed with Meg's leadership and preference for garden variety robbery and extortion.[1] Her vision of the raiders was not at all what he wanted out of Appalachia, namely new loot and new victims to torture and murder for fun.[2] He left after deciding that the Crater raiders were merely Foundation settlers, except with studs and leather, setting out across the region to learn more about the original raider gangs that formed in the region before the Scorched wiped most of them out.[3]

While he appreciates the Blood Eagles for their affinity for violence and torture, he stays independent, especially since it means he doesn't have to share his drugs with anyone else.[4] In his travels, he managed to piece together the history of the raiders and developed a particular appreciation for the Cutthroats' brand of chaos and mayhem, particularly David Thorpe's decision to destroy Charleston in the Christmas Flood. In fact, he is infatuated with the late Thorpe, jealous that Rose managed to snatch him up - although he has a disturbing appreciation for the atrocity perpetrated by David in her apparent memory.[5]

The destroyed Charleston attracted him so much that he erected a small camp in what was once downtown, settling down to revel in the death and destruction around him. He wishes he could have joined the original Cutthroats,[6] and continues their attempt to eradicate the Responders by keeping tabs on the nearby Fire Breathers' training course, keen to kill anyone who tries to complete it.[3] He hates the Responders with a passion,[7] considering them to be weak and worthy of contempt for trying to help people in a world that, as far as Gnash is concerned, is now predicated on violence. To Gnash, the strongest should survive and the weaklings will perish, killed by Gnash and his ilk.[8]

Gnash doesn't have need for anything beyond mayhem, drugs and alcohol. If visitors do not have these ready, Gnash would rather be left alone.[9] He is open to flirtation and casual sex with particularly attractive people, to the point of sharing his drug stash.[10] He'll even take pity on wannabe raiders and share his stash with them too, as long as they aren't serious about trying to rob him of caps.[11]

Other interactions[]

  • The player can threaten him for caps using a Strength 8+ check. Gnash reacts positively to the threat, assuming the Vault Dweller must be on Buffout and gives them an Addictol, but threatens the Vault Dweller that if they really do touch his caps, they will meet his knife (which is an idle threat, as he cannot be hurt).
  • The player can say they have a thing for bad boys with a Charisma 8+ check, regardless of the Vault Dweller's gender. Gnash says the Vault Dweller is not their type, but posits taking them on a raid and celebrating after, then gives them a Psycho.

  1. Vault 76 dweller: " Can you tell me more about you? "
Gnash: "I'm your worst nightmare. Hahaha... just kidding. Maybe. You can call me Gnash. I came to Appalachia with those sorry excuses for Raiders who are holed up in Crater now. Their leader, Meg, couldn't even hack it as Cutthroat and had to start her own gang. They don't do nearly enough stealing and killing, if you ask me. "
  2. Gnash: "I heard that there was people coming back here in search of some treasure." I'm not really interested in that sort of thing, but I couldn't pass up having some new victims! Where there's people, there's things to be stolen and lives to be ruined. "
  3. 3.0 3.1 Gnash: "I got tired of the Raiders acting like those Foundation babies but with studs and leather, and left to find out more about the gangs that were here. After I heard about what had happened here in Charleston, I knew I had to see all of the destruction myself. Plus I hear there's some sort of Responder training set up around here. I'd love to do my part and help keep them extinct. "
  4. Vault 76 dweller: "Have you heard of the Blood Eagles? They seem more your style. "
Gnash: "I like their appreciation for violence and the finer things in life, like torture… But for now I'm happy on my own. Less people to share my chems with that way. "
  5. Vault 76 dweller: "What was so great about the Cutthroats? "
Gnash: "The Cutthroats didn't let anyone walk over them and weren't afraid to use any means necessary to get what they wanted. This destruction is from a MINI NUKE David used against the Responders when they took his girlfriend... honestly I don't know what he saw in her... I wish I could've heard the Responders crying and screaming while they all drowned like the helpless rats they were. "
  6. Vault 76 dweller: "What are you doing in Charleston? "
Gnash: "Thought I'd stop by, witness the death and destruction of Charleston and the Responders. Thanks to David Thorpe and the Cutthroats, the greatest gang to ever exist, we have this waterfront destination right here in Appalachia! Too bad they all got killed by the Scorched though, I would've loved to join them. "
  7. Vault 76 dweller: "The Responders got what was coming to them. "
Gnash: "Ha ha! Hell yeah, they did! They never should have underestimated David and the Cutthroats. Just sad I wasn't here to witness it, or to get me a few Responder heads myself. "
  8. Vault 76 dweller: "Why don't you like the Responders? All they wanted to do was help people. "
Gnash: "The only thing good about them was they gave supplies to weaklings and made it easier for raiders to steal. Society is gone. If you can't change with the times, then the rest of us will pick you off one by one. Or I guess in the case of the Christmas Flood, over a thousand at a time. "
  9. Gnash: "I don't know you, You ain't my friend. I only need three things in this world: chaos, chems, and a cold beer. If you're not putting up any, then you can move along. "
  10. Vault 76 dweller: "[Charisma 8+] You know, I have a thing for bad boys. "
Gnash: "I'm not your typical bad boy…"
If Charisma <8: "...and sorry, you're not my type. You could probably use this... and maybe a cold shower."
If Charisma >8: "...but we do have that in common. Maybe I'll take you on a raid with me sometime and we can celebrate after. Do some chems... bathe in the blood of our enemies... here's a taste, for now. "
  11. Vault 76 dweller: "[Strength 8+] Give me all your caps! "
Gnash: "I like your style! I think all those Buffouts might be going to your head though, try this. And just so you know... if you ever try to take my caps by force, you and my blade will be getting real well-acquainted. "
