Well, I was born and raised not far from here. I ended up leaving not long after becoming a ghoul. Let's say that things got a little dangerous. Nowadays, I live in a small compound out in the hills. Just ghouls there, doing what we can to survive.

Eugenie is a client and merchant of the Blue Ridge Caravan Company at Big Bend Tunnel East in Fallout 76. She is one of the possible merchants traveling with pack brahmin through Big Bend Tunnel during the Riding Shotgun event.

Background[]

Born and raised near Appalachia, Eugenie survived the Great War, but was exposed to enough radiation to trigger ghoulification. Forced to leave her fellow survivors, she dodged bigots for years, evading attempts to kill her just for who she became. Eventually, she joined a group of like-minded ghouls, living in a commune for almost a decade.[1] While safe, she felt that she was stuck there for a decade, afraid to venture out. She finally got up and decided to take her chances, gathering supplies, caps, and venturing out to become a merchant. As it turned out, coming into town with goods is an excellent way to make people talk to ghouls (and the firepower she carries ensures they stay civilized).[2]

Eventually, she contracted the Blue Ridge Caravan Company for protection, making regular runs through the Big Bend Tunnel, ferrying weapons, ammunition, and explosives. The company believes her to still be closely tied to the compound,[3] and Joanna Mayfield would like nothing more than Eugenie recruiting more traders for Blue Ridge, on top of the generous commission Eugenie provides.[4] As a result, she receives preferential rates, as free agents have to pay significantly more.[5]

In reality, Eugenie has moved out of the compound and set up her own network of contacts to source her wares from. However, she remains in touch with the ghouls at the compound through letters. Though they are simple updates on what is going on in the compound, she treasures them as a reminder that she can always come back. While her fellow ghouls do miss her greatly,[6] she is reluctant to return and sell for them again. She prefers being her own boss,[7] She never liked what they were doing with the proceeds she generated, though she does not specify what exactly was going on to lead her into conflict with the members of the compound.[8]

Eugenie is used to traveling through the Big Bend Tunnel. While she prefers Libby Wen for her professionalism,[9] she is often paired with Kieran Kennedy. The gruff, silent guard stands in stark contrast to the chatty, joking Eugenie,[10] and the two developed a healthy respect for each other. Eugenie gently teases Kieran about his brooding attitude from time to time,[11] and even feigns ignorance just to get him talking.[12] This unlikely bond is useful, as every run through the tunnel means going through a throng of Blood Eagles.[13] She also knows Tommy Ten-Toes and played darts with him during a stay at Middle Mountain Pitstop, beating the former mobster. It appears that their preferred variant is the 301 version of the game.[14]

The ghoul community remains her biggest weakness. She misplaced one of the letters she received, leaving it in Summersville, and the fact has been weighing on her. Vinny Costa, her manager, noticed that her distractions: Eugenie was daydreaming, wandering off the trail and losing track of cargo - and since she is a top earner for the company, anything happening to her would impact the bottom line severely.[15] What complicates the issue are second thoughts about leaving the compound:[16] on one hand, the other ghouls are practiclaly her family and she still cares about them.[17] On the other, she is her own person, free to forge her own road.[18] During Costa Business: Eugenie, the Vault Dwellers of Vault 76 have several options for how to encourage or discourage Eugenie about having moved out of the compound.[19]

  • Costa Business: Eugenie: Eugenie wants to retrieve a private letter from a friend. Although not necessary, the player can read her mail against her wishes. Regardless of whether the letter is read, she will reveal that she has moved out and uses her own connections for supplies now, and is keeping it a secret from Vinny. The player can give her advice on what to do, and possibly tell Vinny about Eugenie's secret.

Appearances[]

Eugenie appears in Fallout 76, introduced in the Wastelanders update. Her character was expanded upon in the Once in a Blue Moon update.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Quest designer Carl McKevitt was a contributor to Eugenie's design and writing.[Non-game 1]
  • According to McKevitt, Eugenie's line "let's get a mooove on" (a Brahmin/cow joke) was actually an unintentional pun. Although the line had existed in the script (without the "moo" part in move), voice actress Marisha Ray realized the potential for the joke, alongside the voice director for the session, and delivered it that way. McKevitt was not present for Eugenie's voice recording session, as he was visiting family at the time, and only discovered the joke later.[Non-game 1]

  1. Vault 76 dweller: "Where are you from?"
Eugenie: "Well, I was born and raised not far from here. I ended up leaving not long after becoming a ghoul. Let's say that things got a little dangerous. Nowadays, I live in a small compound out in the hills. Just ghouls there, doing what we can to survive."
    (Eugenie's dialogue)
  2. Eugenie: "You know, I've been doing this traveling merchant thing for a while now. I spent damn near a decade stuck in our compound, hiding from people that would kill us on sight just for being who we are. I've found that rolling into town with supplies and caps to trade eases up the tension, get's people talkin' to you again. The fact that I'm strapped to the teeth in fire power doesn't hurt neither. But some people, like the Blood Eagles... there's no discussion to be had."
    (Eugenie's dialogue)
  3. Vault dweller: "Anything about Eugenie I should know?"
Vinny Costa: "We've been guardin' for her a while now. Sells guns, explosives, the good stuff. She, and her gear, come from some ghoul community somewheres way off. She won't talk about it much. Normally I don't gotta worry 'bout her. Lately, that ain't the case."
    (Vinny Costa's dialogue)
  4. Big Bend Tunnel terminal entries; Blue Ridge terminal, Staff and Clients for Appalachia: "Client / Merchant : Eugenie (Arms and Ammunition)
    >> Very valuable client, lots of commission. Reminder: get her to recruit more people from her compound to sell wares."
  5. Vault 76 dweller: "She's fine-- hey, did you know she moved out from that ghoul compound? I read all about it."
Vinny Costa: "She what? She moved outta that place? Shit, kid, you shoulda said that sooner. Ain't no way I can overlook it: her being a free agent changes some, uh... pricing options. You don't know it but you just made my day, pal. Probably ruined ol' Eugenie's year but eh, she'll be fine."
    (Vinny Costa's dialogue)
  6. Eugenie's letter
  7. Vault 76 dweller: "What was it about?"
Eugenie: "It's from someone back at the compound I come from.. er, came from. We were a community of ghouls holed up in the hills. I haven't told anyone here, but I've actually moved out. All my guns and gear come from my own connections these days-- not that I'd tell Vinny that. The letters, though... Are just ordinary updates on life. And a reminder that I can always come back. I left for... good reason. I don't regret it. But... some folks here are just... family. Plus, if I went back... I'd be selling for them again." *sighs* "I know I'm being vague, but I could still use some advice. What do you think?"
    (Eugenie's dialogue)
  8. Vault dweller: "It'd help if you could tell me why you left."
Eugenie: "Let's just say I didn't like what they were doing with their cut of the business."
    (Eugenie's dialogue)
  9. Vault 76 dweller: "How about Libby Wen?"
Eugenie: "Don't tell the others, but Libby is my guard of choice. Things just run a lot more smoothly with her at the helm. Her family basically raised her like it was boot camp. I know they drive her batty, but they sure brought her up right. She's a real professional."
    (Eugenie's dialogue)
  10. Eugenie: "We'll be carrying a load of premium arms and ammunition, so I'd appreciate an extra touch of care. Hopefully the reward for getting me there in one piece will more than compensate for any bullets you... invest."
Kieran Kennedy: "Hrmm... Let's move out."
    (Eugenie and Kieran Kennedy's dialogue)
  11. Eugenie: "So, how's the family?"
    Kieran Kennedy: "Fine... Safe."
    (Eugenie and Kieran Kennedy's dialogue)
  12. Eugenie: "That was a tough fight. Why don't we try taking the roads over the mountains next time?"
Kieran Kennedy: "The cliffs above makes travel by Brahmin too slow, too dangerous. The lack of cover leaves us vulnerable. There are no roads that won't lead to a fight. At least this way is favorable for fighting larger numbers. I would have thought you knew that, Eugenie."
Eugenie: "Of course I did, but look how I've finally got you talking, Kieran. Tell me, how was your childhood?"
Kieran Kennedy: "Hrmm... Stop messing around."
    (Eugenie and Kieran Kennedy's dialogue)
  13. Eugenie: "Expect armed resistance-- never been a run that hasn't had it. It'll likely be Blood Eagles, and it can come at any moment. Stay alert."
    (Eugenie's dialogue)
  14. Darts at the Pitstop
  15. Vault 76 dweller: "Got any work that needs doing?"
Vinny Costa: "Got someone else I need ya to chat with. Eugenie's head's been outta the game lately. Daydreamin', wanderin' off trail and losin' track of cargo. Not exactly what you want from a top earner like her. She bites it and our profits take a nasty hit. See what's up, and get it sorted out."
    (Vinny Costa's dialogue)
  16. Eugenie: "Well hey there, what brings you here?"
Vault 76 dweller: "Vinny said you've veen out of it."
Eugenie: "I, uh, yeah. I've had some stuff on my mind lately. Been difficult to stay focused. Started gettin' letters from people I've not spoken to for a while. People I care about, quite a lot. Managed to lose one before I got to read it, and it's been eatin' at me. It's in Summersville, I just haven't had the opportunity to retrieve it. If you can bring it back, unopened, I'll owe you."
    (Eugenie's dialogue)
  17. Vault 76 dweller: "Being with people you care about is important. Think it through."
Eugenie: "Oh trust me, I've thought about it... But you're right, family means a lot. Thanks for listening."
    (Eugenie's dialogue)
  18. Vault 76 dweller: "You had your reasons for leaving. If nothing's changed, don't go back."
Eugenie: "You're right. And I'm my own ghoul now. Thanks kid."
    (Eugenie's dialogue)
