The Mesquite Mountains crater is a location in the Mojave Wasteland in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

While 77 atomic warheads were launched at Las Vegas and the surrounding area during the Great War, 59 were forcefully disarmed mid-flight by intricate defense systems set in place by Mr. House, and nine were blasted out of the sky by a laser defense system atop the Lucky 38 Hotel & Casino. However, as a result of the platinum chip's delayed arrival, the Mark I OS running House's defense systems failed to take down the remaining nine, which hit the surrounding desert in various spots, the crater being one such spot.[1]

Layout[]

Situated southwest of Primm and north of Mesquite Mountains camp site, the pools of water found here are heavily irradiated and at any given time, there are several feral ghouls, roamers, or reavers roaming the area.[Non-game 1] A small shack known as Hell's Motel is situated on the southwest side of the crater. A copy of D.C. Journal of Internal Medicine can be found inside the house next to the radio along with a weapon repair kit.

To the east, there is an improvised shelter with a bed and a first aid box. Below the eastern cliff is a makeshift shack with a motorcycle - a Fixin' Things and Programmer's Digest may be found on top of the motorcycle and underneath a stack of burned books, respectively.

  1. The Courier: "What preparations did you make to save Las Vegas?"
Robert House: "On the day of the Great War, 77 atomic warheads targeted Las Vegas and its surrounding areas. My networked mainframes were able to predict and force-transmit disarm code subsets to 59 warheads, neutralizing them before impact. Laser cannons mounted on the roof of the Lucky 38 destroyed another 9 warheads. The rest got through, though none hit the city itself. A sub-optimal performance, admittedly. If only the Platinum Chip had arrived a day sooner..."

Non-game

  1. [4.19] Mesquite Mountains Crater
In the eastern foothills west of the California Sunset Drive-in [4.18], there's a Mesquite Mountains Lean-To [4.S21] some rather ominous flecks of irradiated matter emanating from the hills behind. This is the location of an ancient crater. There are Feral Ghouls here that remain ready to kill, as well as irradiated tumbleweed. Keep to the rocks and explore further to the west, and a strange two-level shack appears through the haze. This is Hell's Motel. Pass the fungal lower beds and enter the premises, and prepare to repel the advances of a Crazed Mister Handy. He's already put the knife to his erstwhile master Doctor Rotson, who's usually carrying Doctor's Bag on his corpse.
