Our main camp is up in Red Rock Canyon, but we don't allow just anyone to come on in. The NCR can't touch us there - too many places for us to ambush them. We see their scouts poking around once in awhile, but they keep their distance.Melissa, a member of the Great Khans

Red Rock Canyon is a location in the Mojave Wasteland in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

Prior to the Great War, the area was a preserved area known as the "Southwest Commonwealth Conservation Area." Remnants of pre-War campsites and ancient petroglyphs still dot the area though most of the area is dominated by the symbolism and "artistry" of the Great Khans.

Sometime after 2278, the tribe called the Great Khans relocated to Red Rock Canyon after they were forced out of their previous settlement at Bitter Springs by the events of the Bitter Springs Massacre, when the New California Republic Army retaliated against the Great Khans and killed a large number of non-combatants, severely reducing the tribe's numbers.[1] The Great Khans currently focus on rebuilding and growing their chem trade enterprise.[Non-game 1]

Left wounded but not defeated by the NCR, the Great Khans, led by Papa Khan slowly rebuild their strength from within Red Rock Canyon, in particular using the knowledge they learned from the teachings of the Followers of the Apocalypse to create and distribute chems into the wider Mojave, including groups like the Fiends among their customers. Recently, the tribe was visited in their stronghold by Karl, a frumentarius of Caesar's Legion seeking to leverage the Great Khans' strength on the Legion's side against their mutual enemy, the NCR at the impending Second Battle of Hoover Dam.

Layout[]

While the canyon has three entrances, it is most accessible from the east, by following Nevada 159 west from Whittaker farmstead or Poseidon gas station. The widest entrance can be found heading north from the Spring Mt. Ranch State Park. A motorcycle accident will be seen when approaching from this direction.

The Great Khans' base is tucked away into the canyon, consisting of numerous tents on alcoves and ledges. Following the path from the southeast, the canyon opens up. Following the path to the left leads to large arena where the Great Khans perform their initiation ritual, where Jerry the Punk can be found, as well as Jessup upon completing Boulder City Showdown. To the right leads up a slope, following this to the top will lead to a small communal area to the left and the Great Khan longhouse to the right. The communal area is made up of three tents and a large open fire with a brahmin on a spit above it. The tent furthest from the path, behind the fire, is lined with two skulls adorned with NCR helmets. This tent is where Regis can be found sleeping at night. The Longhouse is another communal area for the Khans and is also the home of their leader Papa Khan, from which he holds court with his guests and advisors. Behind the Longhouse and Regis' tent are a total of four outhouses.

Back in the canyon, following the path to the northwest leads to the Red Rock drug lab, where the Great Khans Jack and Diane manufacture and prepare chems for shipment.

Behind the arena, to the northwest is a steep pass, starting from a small pond of clean water, that leads past a cazador nest swarming with cazadors that will eventually lead to the path to Jacobstown.

Each tent contains up to three unowned sleeping spaces, a central fireplace, at least one storage container, pillows, logs of wood, and numerous empty whisky bottles. Khans are also able to sleep on the rugs that are laid around outside the tents.

Notes[]

  • If one goes to Red Rock Canyon while Boone is an active companion, the Great Khans will turn hostile.
  • If Boulder City Showdown was resolved by freeing the NCR captives without killing the Khans, Jessup's crew will be hostile and may turn the other Khans hostile if they spot the player character.
  • Sometimes, a cazador will spawn in the initiation circle. It will attack and may kill nearby Great Khans.
  • While the western exit from the canyon may seem like a one-way road due to the sheer drop on the Red Rock Canyon side, it is possible to bypass the drop and leave the canyon that way. Near the mouth of the south canyon entrance, there is a ridge that will end above a point just on the other side of the drop. This ridge is easily traversable. There are also several cazadores lurking just above this area.

Appearances[]

Red Rock Canyon appears in Fallout: New Vegas and the graphic novel All Roads.

Craig Boone:"Main force got spotted too soon. We heard shooting. Then Khans started coming through Canyon 37 in bunches. It was all wrong, though. Women, kids, elderly. Wounded started coming through, too. We radioed to confirm our orders but command didn't get what we were seeing. They told us to shoot till we were out of ammo. So that's what we did."

"Pre-War, Red Rock Canyon was a popular tourist attraction. Remnants of Pre-War campsites and ancient petroglyphs still dot the area even though it has been completely dominated by Great Khans. The Great Khans have their camps and outposts spread throughout the area, though most of them are concentrated in one area near the red rocks themselves. The Great Khans relocated here after the Bitter Springs Massacre, where NCR accidentally killed a large number of noncombatants during an otherwise normal skirmish between the two groups. Today, the Great Khans while away their time, dreaming of past glories while resorting to petty drug-dealing and battles by proxy (the Fiends) with the NCR."
