On behalf of the Responders, I can't thank you enough. You've helped us make progress toward a more peaceful world. I sure wish I could say that's all the help I needed, but the work never ends. If you're in the neighborhood again some time, I will always welcome more of your help.

Lane Platte is a constable of the Responders and the leader of their outpost at Gilman lumber mill in Fallout 76, introduced in the Expeditions: Atlantic City update part one, Boardwalk Paradise. [1]

Background[]

Prior to arriving at the Gilman lumber camp, Lane lived with his father and his sister Adelaide, while his mother died when he was young.[2] He is from a small town called Knight Ridge on the southern border with Virginia. He and most of the townspeople survived the bombs of the Great War and had lived a relatively peaceful life until recently.[3]

However, when new groups came to Appalachia to search for treasure, they raided the town.[3] Lane believed that fighting the bandits was the best course of action, while his family fled on a caravan. Platte refused to go with them, since he viewed it as a cowardly act. However, he also eventually fled from the area. He is unsure if his father and sister are alive and he regrets not going with them.[4]

He eventually found his way to the Whitespring Resort, which had been transformed into the Responders' refuge.[3] Being on his own, he also began to realize how much he took his peaceful life for granted. He found it natural to join the Responders due to their ideals of establishing a peaceful world.[5] The Responders gave him the title of "constable," or peacekeeper, due to his combat experience. He is not overly fond of his title, believing that it is no longer who he is, but he is willing to accept it in order to further their mission of rebuilding society.[4]

Lane Platte appears only in Fallout 76, introduced in the Expeditions: Atlantic City update part one, Boardwalk Paradise.

Behind the scenes[]

When Lane is first introducing himself, the player has the choice to respond with "I'm something of a Responder myself, actually." This appears to be a reference to a similar line from the 2002 film Spider-Man, spoken by character Norman Osborn: "I'm something of a scientist myself." The Spider-Man line later became an Internet meme.

  1. A Vault Dweller: "What do you do for the Responders?"
Lane Platte: "According to the official record, I'm what they've termed a 'constable.' That's a kind of officer of the peace, if you aren't familiar. Of course, putting a badge on a man does not automatically suit him to that title, so I tend not to emphasize it. I manage this new outpost of ours. I try to keep the nastier critters at bay, and cross my fingers that we can keep the other factions from goin' to war with one another."

  2. A Vault Dweller: "Do you have any family?"
Lane Platte: "Well, the unfortunate answer to that is, 'I don't know.' I had a father and sister. My mother died when I was young. We were separated, you see, when we left our home for Appalachia. I don't know if they're alive or dead. Though I would dearly love to find out."

Lane Platte: "In a manner of speaking. A small, small town called Knight Ridge, on the southern border with old Virginia proper. We survived the Bombs, almost unscathed if you can believe it. Lived in peace for most of my life. It was only with the rush of folks flooding in, searching for that treasure of theirs, that our lives were upended. Knight Ridge was raided, I fled, and was swept along to the Responder's Refuge, where I took up my present vocation."

  5. A Vault Dweller: "What was life like in Knight Ridge?"
Lane Platte: "Remarkably peaceful, considering the broader circumstances. Apocalypse, and all. We hunted our own food, knitted our own clothes... We were isolated, but life went on much as it had. When the raiders came and drove us into the real 'Wasteland,' I came to realize how much I'd take my life for granted. Seemed only natural to join up with the Responders and work toward building a world like we used to have."
    (Lane Platte's dialogue)
