Rose MacLean is a former resident of Vault 33 and ghoul, seen briefly in the Fallout TV series.

Background[]

Rose was born and raised in Vault 33, which was meant to serve as a breeding pool for Vault 31. As such, Rose and her ancestors were deemed to have healthy genetics by the Vault-Tec Corporation. In her early 20s Rose took on the name MacLean after marrying Hank just before/around 2271 when Hank became Overseer of Vault 33. She was unaware Hank was a pre-War Vault-Tec employee. Soon after marriage Hank and Rose got children when around 2272 Lucy was born, and Norm couple/few yrs after.

Upon learning that something was siphoning Vault's water she deduced that civilization had re-emerged on the surface. Hank pointedly forbade this line of questioning, prompting Rose to become suspicious of him. She took the children, exited the Vault to the surface, angering Hank who believed Rose was taking the children into a dangerous world.

FOTV Rose Moldaver Lucy

Rose, Lucy and Moldaver in Shady Sands

During 2277, Rose, exited the vault with children to Shady Sands, although Norm and Lucy were too young in order to have formative memories about the surface world, in addition to memories being of short nature. There, Rose became close with Lee Moldaver. The same year (possibly during The Fall of Shady Sands in 2277), Hank and Vault 31 Management confronted Rose (and others who likely exited Vault 33) and she (according to Moldaver) decided not to return home. Hank took the children back into Vault 33. Hank and Vault 31 personnel lied to the people of Vault 33, including his children as they grew up, telling them that Rose died during The Plague of 2277 when everyone had to quarantine what prevented working Vault farms, caused famine, and people starved.

She was in the vicinity of Shady Sands when it was destroyed[citation needed] post-2281.[2] This may have been the event which transformed her into a ghoul, although it is hypothetically possible she was transformed into a ghoul by other means.[citation needed]

Rose was then moved to Griffith Observatory.

Fallout TV series[]

Rose's Pip-Boy was used to access Vault 32, according to logs.

Rose is seen in flashback sequences, when Lucy is reminiscing.

The Beginning[]

FOTV Rose ghoul

Rose as a feral ghoul

When Lucy arrived at the Griffith Observatory, Moldaver was sitting at a dinner table with a particularly wretched feral ghoul. She invited Lucy to sit with them, who refused. Moldaver then revealed this ghoul to be what yet remained of Rose.

She was ultimately mercy-killed by her daughter during the Brotherhood attack on the observatory with a 10mm to the side of the skull. Shortly thereafter, Moldaver sat beside her body and held her hand as she succumbed to her wounds.[3]

Personality[]

According to Moldaver, Rose was similar to Lucy, being kind, loving and curious.

Appearances[]

Rose MacLean appears in flashbacks in the Fallout TV series episodes "The End", "The Ghouls", "The Past" and "The Beginning", and in her feral ghoul form in "The Beginning."

Behind the scenes[]

When asked if Rose and Moldaver were lovers, Moldaver's actress replied, "I have a backstory and I can’t say much. But I can say I love that [fans] are picking up on all of this and adding — or whatever — to it. There is such a closeness and who knows… if there’s a Season 2, you’ll find out.”[4]
