We are the lucky ones. We are the light burning in the darkness. And we will carry on until the day we bring that light to the surface.— "The Past"

Betty Pearson is an executive assistant at Vault-Tec in the Fallout TV series. She becomes the overseer of Vault 33 in 2297 after the abduction of Hank MacLean.

Background[]

A former Overseer, Betty is part of Vault 33's governing council along with Woody Thomas and Reg McPhee. She cares deeply for the community and holds paramount its security and safety. Her no nonsense personality and natural leadership skills make her the real face of the council despite what Woody and Reg would like to believe.Fallout Season 1 description

Betty meets Cooper Howard

Betty was a Vault-Tec Corporation employee before the Great War, working as an executive assistant to Barb Howard. She met Cooper Howard when he visited Vault-Tec's building and admitted some of the corporation's knowledge was above her pay grade. She requested that Cooper meet Henry "Hank" MacLean, as he was a big fan of the actor's work.

She was cryonically frozen in Vault 31 on the eve of the Great War as one of Bud Askins' "Bud's Buds." She was unfrozen on February 15, 2246, and later sent to Vault 33.[1] After having served as overseer for years, she eventually retired. Hank MacLean, also sent from Vault 31, took her place as Overseer, while Betty stayed on the vault's governing council. As Overseer, she had text communication with Askins, the Overseer of Vault 31, via her terminal.

A few decades later, she and Hank supposedly buried Rose MacLean with her Pip-Boy after her death. However, Rose is later shown to be alive as a ghoul.

During the wedding dance, Betty notices Chet disappointed Lucy is married to someone else and so she invites Chet to dance with her.

Betty opposes opening Vault 33

Betty is mysteriously absent during Lee Moldaver 's raid on Vault 33, and it is unknown if she was hiding somewhere.

When Lucy requests to open the Vault door to rescue her father, Betty feels everyone's first priority should be to maintain the security of the Vault and is against opening it.

The Head[]

The Head meeting Betty Reg Woody

Betty, Reg and Woody leading the vault-wide meeting

Betty appears during Norm MacLean's job reassignment, saying that Norm put not just Vault 33 at risk, but Vault 31 and 32 as well. She claimed to have telegrammed with the Overseer of Vault 31 and confirmed that they are unscathed. Eventually, she comes up with a new job for Norm: feeding the raider prisoners.

During the vault-wide meeting, Betty sits while Reg and Woody stand at the podium. When everyone discusses what should be done with the raiders, Betty feels killing them should not be considered.

The Ghouls[]

Betty brings pie

Betty brings pie

Betty brings some pie she made herself to Norm. She comes to talk to him about how his vocalizing his desire to kill the raiders upset the Vault dwellers and that what he says carries weight because he is the only MacLean left in the Vault. Norm expresses how he feels guilty about hiding during the raid, and Betty notices how he feels angry about it. Betty comments that because Norm is clever, how he channels his anger can lead to dark places, and asks him to tread lightly before she leaves.

The Past[]

When Norm and Chet return from their morbid investigation of Vault 32, Betty asks the two men where they have been. They lie, but Betty seems suspicious of them.

Betty and Norm

Betty speaks to Norm in Vault 32 Overseer's office

She is elected overseer of Vault 33 in 2297 to succeed Hank with 98% of the vote after his abduction, making her overseer again. During Betty's celebration ceremony, she is prepared to serve jello. Norm seems to disturb Betty when he prefers having a slice of cake instead of jello, which goes against the Vault Dwellers overwhelmingly preferring jello. Betty stares down Norm as he leaves, and his action suggests rebellion against her leadership.

Later, Betty announces to the residents that she spoke with the overseer of Vault 31. The two of them agreed that the Vaults were too sacred to leave empty. She says the residents will partake in a resettling campaign. Norm asks Betty about his mother's Pip-Boy, and Betty replies that she buried it with Rose.

The Radio[]

Betty sends out new vault assignments to each dweller, with some staying in Vault 33, while others are to relocate to Vault 32.

Later, Betty announces that Steph Harper is to be the new Overseer of Vault 32. Then she orders the inter-vault door to be opened and says good luck to the new dwellers of Vault 32 as they depart to enter.

Meanwhile, Norm uses Betty's terminal to impersonate her and communicate with the overseer of Vault 31, requesting a meeting.

Personality[]

Betty smiling

Betty seems to be a kind and responsible member of her Vault; she also portrays herself as the coolheaded, experienced, moderator of Vault 33's governing council. She is seen comforting Chet, such as by asking him to dance during Lucy's wedding, as well as Norm MacLean.

However, she is treated very suspiciously by Norm throughout the show, as if she is hiding a darker side. Norm finds it strange how Vault 32 was cleaned up, and Betty did not mention anything about what she found in it. While she claims killing the Vault 32 raiders is out of the question, it is unclear if she was the one who poisoned them.

It is later revealed that Betty was one of Vault-Tec's employees who had been frozen through time. Betty claims she "buried" Rose MacLean when she died, although it is unclear if her choice of wording hints she was also responsible for nuking Shady Sands with Hank. It is also unknown if her motive for having people resettle into Vault 32 has a dark ulterior motive, especially given the water chip failure. However, she relocated Steph into the Vault as an overseer, another Vault-Tec employee. Whether or not Betty will betray Steph is yet to be seen. Betty also had Norm and Chet split up, suggesting she was trying to hinder their investigation.
