I have... so many questions. Just... how? Why? I was saying goodbye to everybody and... they're really gone. I think I understand what has happened from stray broadcasts... to some degree. I guess... I guess it was war. And somehow... this is the world that survived. I can't even put all of this into words right now.

Commander Sofia Daguerre is a potential ally and former astronaut found in Appalachia.

Background[]

A veteran of the U.S.S.A. space program, Commander Daguerre originally lived in Chicago as a child. Her mother was a factory worker who would bring home items that were damaged on the production lines for her.[1] As an adult, Sofia went through physics in college, where she met and started a relationship with Emerson Hale. This lasted through graduate school, with the two going camping in Appalachia several times, but they broke up in the end, though they stayed friends. She had a few other relationships, but they were all "nothing serious." After finishing college, Sofia moved to Washington, D.C., where she then applied for the astronaut program until she was accepted.[2][3][4] During this time, she lived in a small apartment near the U.S.S.A. headquarters, although her career kept her busy and mostly away from home. When she had time, she preferred to frequent a local comic book shop and read new issues of the Unstoppables.[5]

In her time in the U.S.S.A., she worked with Hale again and unknowingly participated in a long-term suspended animation experiment called the Deep Sleep project. She and her crewmates Bernard, Nowak and Lee went into forced hibernation shortly after their ship achieved orbit in 2070. They were supposed to wake up in 2075, with a possible extension until 2080. However, due to the Great War, the experiment unintentionally continued until 2103, when the ship crashed in Appalachia.

Unaware of what had befallen the world, Commander Daguerre managed to limp away from her crash site and find refuge in one of the Free States' old bunkers until being found by a Vault Dweller of Vault 76. After being told of the fate of the US as a result of a nuclear war, Sofia asks the Vault Dweller(s) to help locate her crew and also if they would be willing to let her stay at their C.A.M.P. until she discovers their fate by asking for a special U.S.S.A. console to be set up to help her with deciphering what happened since her time in space.

Sofia and the Vault Dweller later discovered that the true goal of the Deep Sleep Program was to create a link between the subject's brain and an A.I. called ATHENA, with the objective of creating a surveillance A.I. that could monitor everything from the point of view of all connected subjects. Although her crewmates were aware of the original goal of the project and were not supposed to have been part of the experiment, they were forced to participate once they were in orbit.

She claims she was once aboard "The Space Station," which probably refers to the Valiant-1.[6] The wreckage of her escape pod found in the Mire is identical to the architecture of the Valiant-1.[7]

Sofia is a technical expert (and somewhat of a nerd) when it comes to scanner technologies.[8][9] She is also an avid video game player, and was the reigning champion of Grognak & the Ruby Ruins on the East Coast.[10][11] She also owned a collection of Unstoppables comics, which she took with her into space, but lost in the chaos. The Mistress of Mystery was her favorite character, and she even wanted to work for the Mistress as a child.[5][12]

Notes[]

  • Daguerre can become the Vault Dweller's girlfriend regardless of gender, so she may be interpreted as being bisexual or pansexual. This is similar to Beckett in Fallout 76 and certain other companions in Fallout 4.
  • Daguerre wears a unique spacesuit with the name tag removed.
  • She is a vegetarian.[6] This is revealed if Grahm passes by the player's C.A.M.P. and engages Daguerre in conversation.
  • Daguerre mentions meeting Grahm while out on a stroll. He was selling things, and offered to visit the C.A.M.P. to check up on her.[13]
  • She kept a pet turtle for most of her life.[4]

Notable quotes[]

Appearances[]

Sofia Daguerre appears in Fallout 76, introduced in the Wastelanders update.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Sofia has several lines recorded for the quest Thicker Than Water. She mentions Ronny as well as having a brother, suggesting parts of Beckett's history were originally intertwined with Sofia's story.
  • Sofia's line about floating in space forever has become a joke in the Fallout 76 community, due to how frequently she expresses this perhaps strangely-worded sentiment. It was later echoed nearly word-for-word by Steven Scarberry, a C.A.M.P. ally added in a later update: "I just can't shake these nightmares. Floating in darkness forever... What if I cannot find His Light?"

  1. Vault 76 dweller: "Where am I headed?"
Sofia Daguerre: "It's inside an old factory. My mom used to work in a factory when I was a kid. Used to bring home stuff that got mangled in the belts. Ah, anyway..."
    (Sofia Daguerre's dialogue)
  2. A Vault Dweller: "[Luck] Ever visit Appalachia before all this?"
Sofia Daguerre: "Oddly... yes. I camped out here a few times while I was in graduate school with a good friend, Emerson. Ah, those were the days. We were in the same physics programs at college and hit it off. It ended up not working out for us, but we remained friends... Which was good because he joined the U.S.S.A. towards the end of my astronaut training. Ha! That would have been awkward."
    (Sofia Daguerre's dialogue)
  3. A Vault Dweller: "What's Emerson's deal?"
Sofia Daguerre: "He's always seemed a bit odd, honestly. Even back before I launched. We used to be friends in college, but... people change so much in college."
    (Sofia Daguerre's dialogue)
  4. 4.0 4.1 A Vault Dweller: "[Flirt] I'm dying to know more about you, Sofia. You're intriguing."
Sofia Daguerre: "Okay. I'm from Chicago, parents moved there when I was little... After college, I went to the D.C. area and applied for the astronaut program a couple times until I was accepted. My folks were so proud... Hmm... other than that... I had a few relationships. Nothing serious. Had a pet turtle for most of my life. That *was* pretty serious. I dunno. That's the high level overview anyway. I'm not a weirdo, if that was what you were asking."
    (Sofia Daguerre's dialogue)
  5. 5.0 5.1 Vault 76 dweller: "Want to talk about your life before you became an astronaut?"
Sofia Daguerre: "Oh, sure. Let's see. I don't really want to talk about my family because, well, I don't even know if they... *sighs* Ok, so... hobbies. I had a small apartment near the U.S.S.A. headquarters. Nothing special. I wasn't home much, you see. When I had time, I used to go to the comic book shop down the road and sit and drink coffee and read the latest issues of the Unstoppables. I used to want to work for the Mistress of Mystery when I was a kid, you see. But I did the next best thing, I guess, and went to space."
    (Sofia Daguerre's dialogue)
  6. 6.0 6.1 Grahm: "Hey. Hey you. You different than the other squishies. You seem fresh. Not stinky. How so not stinky?"
Sofia Daguerre: "Oh, uh, well. Okay. Thanks? It's probably because I haven't been irradiated and soaked with all the despair yet. No doubt I'll probably start... stinking... soon though. Being in space kept me safe from a lot of things for a while."
Grahm: "SPACE?! You're from... the MOON?! Or... the SUN?! Or... the little TWINKLES?!"
Sofia Daguerre: "The Space Station, yes, but... before it crashed. All that is in the past though --"
Grahm: "Can you take Chally to Space? Chally want to fly someday. Grahm okay with the ground. But Chally have dreams."
Sofia Daguerre: "Uh... I haven't been able to get in touch with the USSA ---"
Grahm: "What do Space people eat? You eat meat? Space meat?! MOON MEAT?"
Sofia Daguerre: "Moon... meat? No. I eat grains, plants, mushrooms... I don't eat meat. Wait... do you think the moon is made of meat?"
Grahm: "Oh! Greenies. Like Chally. SEE? Chally is ready for SPACE! Chally is going to the MOON!"
Sofia Daguerre: "Er... well. I doubt that we could find a helmet ---"
Grahm: "Chally isn't Moo-Moo for long! Soon Chally is MOON-MOON!"
Sofia Daguerre: "Why not? Dream big or don't dream at all... um. I gotta get back to... literally anything else now."
    (Grahm and Sofia Daguerre's dialogue)
  7. Not only is this visible from the surface, but moving the player underground reveals a large interior section of the space station.
  8. Vault 76 dweller: "I'll find a scanner upgrade module for you."
Sofia Daguerre: "Swell. In the meantime, I'll fix up this console a bit. Did you know that it *still* uses the outdated P14-b configuration for its power chamber? I mean, I know you all survived the end of the world, but... using this as-is would be like living in squalor *and* the apocalypse."
    (Sofia Daguerre's dialogue)
  9. Sofia Daguerre: "This console looks pretty good. A little rusty in places though... I guess you got these parts from a junkyard, huh? Resourceful. The scanner currently has a model 38-x2, which is built for scanning very specific locations. Not bad, but... I would like to improve it. The year before I launched, the military was rolling out some scanner upgrades. One of those could give us more speed and detail in our scans."
    (Sofia Daguerre's dialogue)
  10. A Vault Dweller: "How's the holotape game, Sofia?"
Sofia Daguerre: "It's been soothing to play games again -- a few moments of normalcy once more. I think it even helps my headache a bit."
    (Sofia Daguerre's dialogue)
  11. Vault 76 dweller: "Want a copy of my Grognak Holotape game?"
Sofia Daguerre: "You're looking at the reigning East Coast Champion of the Ruby Ruins, my friend. And yes -- for the record, I would love to play it even more. Transfer it to my console?"
    (Sofia Daguerre's dialogue)
  12. A Vault Dweller: "[Perception] You read comics back... before all this, right?"
Sofia Daguerre: "Yeah, of course! The Unstoppables, Silver Shroud, all of that. Mistress of Mystery was my favorite, of course. I was hoping that the new television show for the Mistress of Mystery would be out when I returned, but... I guess not."
    (Sofia Daguerre's dialogue)
  13. A Vault Dweller: "Maybe you should get out of here and get some fresh air?"
Sofia Daguerre: "I did! Last time you were gone, I went on a short stroll. Didn't go far... but I saw some weird stuff. Just... bizarre. Saw a giant... huge... greenish... man? With a two-headed cow. He was selling things. Super nice fellow. He said he would stop by later. Said he hopes to check on me when he can. I can't wait. It's... such a shock but also amazing!"
    (Sofia Daguerre's dialogue)
