The wendigo cave is a location in the Savage Divide region of Appalachia. Various species of mirelurks, feral ghouls and wendigos have made a home in the cave.

Background[]

Known as the "wendigo cave" even before the Great War, it served as a shelter for a small group of soldiers after the bombs dropped, as a place of refuge from the freezing winter of 2077-78.[2] However, it appears at least some of the soldiers perished nonetheless.[3]

Later, the cave became the refuge for Morris Stevens, the now-exiled leader of the Gourmands, a cannibalistic raider group. He and his wife Edie were banished for eating a member of their own group.[4][5][6] Both Stevens began to lose their sanity, with Morris refusing to share anything more than scraps with Edie.[7] Eventually, Morris completely lost his mind and ate his wife.[8] It was around this point that Morris became the first wendigo, the progenitor wendigo. Eventually, bounty hunters were sent to hunt Morris down, and at least one group was wiped out in the cave.[9]

Layout[]

The cave is a mandatory stop during Key to the Past and quickly proves to be a deathly maze of claustrophobic, poorly lit corridors filled with a variety of monsters, including ghouls, mirelurks, and of course, wendigos. The confusing layout can be made a little saner by remembering that the cavern is shaped roughly like the letter "B."

The entrance lies to the southeast. Major points of interest include the wendigo chamber in the northernmost chamber, which also includes the location's steamer trunk, a power armor spawn point at the central tunnel that runs east to west (it has a large drop, a stair in the center), and a large chamber that runs north to south on the western side of the cave, which includes plenty of enemy spawns. The expansive cave network is riddled with brain fungus and glowing fungus for harvest.

Notable loot[]

  • Wendigo cave - Soldier's story - Holotape, near the deceased soldiers in the first large chamber.
  • Raider's note - Note, next to the body of a dead raider on a small ledge directly north of the waterfall in the large cavern, around halfway through the cave.
  • Gourmands' key fragment - Holotape, on the progenitor wendigo that spawns during the mission Key to the Past.
  • Edie's note - Note, on a sleeping bag near a rock column in the last large chamber with a waterfall in the aforementioned room.
  • Morris's end - Holotape, on a rock next to the rock column near the sleeping bags in the last large chamber with a waterfall in the same room.
  • Four potential Vault-Tec bobbleheads:
    • In the section with the spike floor trap board, two sleeping bags, and skeletons.
    • In the watery junction cavern with the rock column; in an area with two skeletons, open first aid boxes, and some entrails; inside of a small blue tray container.
    • At a junction cavern of the cave interior with a large rock column, near a skeleton and canned dog food.
    • In the rubble-filled alcove with the metal box, below the shaft of light, by the chained skeleton with the red bandana.
  • Four potential magazines:
    • Above the river, in the upper section of the main cavern, by the skeleton with the cooler.
    • Near a small pond of dirty water and an ammo box, near the northwest wall, by a skull separated from a skeleton.
    • Southeast of the main cavern junction with the large rock column, in a pile of bloody human bones.
    • On the southeast side of the narrow tunnel with bone chimes (runs east-west), in with the cave near the orange toolbox and wicker basket, by the headless skeleton with the first aid kit and Rad-X.
  • Two potential armor plans:
    • In the first large cavern inhabited by mirelurks, next to a skeleton and a cooler.
    • On a small ledge directly south of the waterfall in the large cavern, around halfway through the cave, next to the body of a dead raider.
  • Potential plan - In one of the trapped antechambers, near the sleeping bags.
  • Two potential recipes:
    • On a small ledge directly south of the waterfall in the large cavern, around halfway through the cave, next to the body of a dead raider.
    • In one of the trapped antechambers, near the sleeping bags.
  • Power armor chassis with Raider armor pieces - Can spawn in a side tunnel before entering the large cave with the waterfall where Edie's body is found.
  • Stealth Boy - To the left of a skeleton, in a side room near the first waterfall room.

Appearances[]

The wendigo cave appears only in Fallout 76.

Bugs[]

PC Xbox One Playstation 4 Sometimes the progenitor wendigo (Morris Stevens) fails to spawn in the cave for many players, breaking a main quest line and halting their progress.[verification overdue]

  • A possible solution is to enter the wendigo cave room from the normal cave path, instead of the rear entrance (by jumping up the cliff at the beginning of the cave). This may be because the trigger to spawn the wendigo is only at the front entryways to the room. It is possible to use the easy route jumping up the cliff to the wendigo cave room, the wendigo will not appear, fast travel away then fast travel back, use the easy route again and the wendigo should be there.[verification overdue]
  • Another solution is to throw a grenade at the center pillar near the waterfall in the wendigo room. This will sometimes trigger the wendigo to spawn.[verification overdue]
