The assault rifle is a ranged weapon in Fallout 76.

Background[]

Fed from a side-mounted magazine, this assault rifle has anti-aircraft style sights and interchangeable barrels and magazines.[Non-game 1] It includes a charging handle on the right fashioned out of wood. A common sight in Appalachia, this assault rifle is used by Scorched, Raiders, Settlers, and super mutants.

This heavy assault rifle[1], originally built for use by troops in power armor[2], is a long, cylindrical-barrel design which appears to share more characteristics with light machine guns than any other firearm.[3][Non-game 1] It features a side-fed magazine which houses 30 rounds of 5.56mm ammunition (can be upgraded to hold up to 80) and has select fire capability in either semi-automatic or fully automatic. It offers immense recoil control and remains very easy to keep under control, even when fully automatic.

The assault rifle features a side-mounted magazine and fires 5.56mm rounds. If fitted with an automatic receiver, the rifle uses Commando perks instead of Rifleman perks.

Notes[]

  • The side of the suppressor mod has "CAL .50" printed on it, even though the weapon uses 5.56mm rounds.
  • In reality, the term "assault rifle" refers to a rifle with the ability to shift between fire modes by a selector switch, while the in-game weapon is incapable of this and fire modes can only be changed by building separate receiver modifications.
  • After reloading, the player character does not cock the gun by its charging handle.
  • While idling with the gun equipped in first person view, an animation will play where the player inspects the assault rifle's magazine.

Behind the scenes[]

The assault rifle was one of the first weapons created during the development of Fallout 4, and was originally dubbed "machine gun" before the weapon crafting system was developed. The model filenames still reflect this original title.[Non-game 1][3]

    The first gun made for the game. We mainly wanted something beefy that would look right in the power armor's oversized hands. It was also a chance to explore modification and customization. We designed it to allow interchangeable barrels and magazines. At this early stage of the project, we didn't plan on giving the player too many options, but we'd go on to develop a deeper and more flexible system.
