Mobile Main Page Featured Content[]

Hey, I saw in WikiFactory that you've changed the mobile main page in a way that the Featured Content isn't now in the actual Featured Content slot, but as one of the Curated Content sections. Was that intended or is it just a byproduct of a bug that we should squash? Warkot (talk) 23:40, April 13, 2016 (UTC)

Fixed! :) If anything like that happens again, please let us know—we'll investigate. Warkot (talk) 01:16, April 14, 2016 (UTC)

Archives[]

Template:Archives, 38 and 39 look fine to me. My guess would be that this page is too expensive. Mazn (talk) 19:21, January 18, 2016 (UTC)

If my guess is true the only solution is to rewrite Template:Archives to be "cheaper". I can do that if you unprotect it. Mazn (talk) 19:31, January 18, 2016 (UTC)
It works now. I had to cheat a little though. My script only checks whether Archive_10, Archive_20, Archive_30, etc. exist and simply assumes the ones in between exist as well. It's a simplification, but hopefully no one will ever notice. What's noticeable though is the increased speed of this page.
Also: The new Template:Archives should work until Archive_100
You can protect Template:Archives again. You should also protect the new Module:Archives while you're at it. Mazn (talk) 03:46, January 19, 2016 (UTC)

Infobox images[]

Hm. Looks like Wikia purposefully disabled the image size parameter. Maybe they were just lazy. I need to come up with a fix that can be copypasted into all infobox templates, right? Let's see... Can you unprotect Template:Infobox weapon, please? Mazn (talk) 23:59, January 19, 2016 (UTC)

It should work now. You can protect Template:Infobox weapon again. And I've added another Module:Image|Lua module. You might want to protect that as well. Mazn (talk) 14:37, January 20, 2016 (UTC)
Correction: I couldn't figure out how to do it with Lua. Lua - or at least the version Wikia uses - doesn't have a way to determine an image file's size. I used traditional parser functions now. It's ugly, but it does seem to work. Delete Module:Image|Lua module, please. Mazn (talk) 15:40, January 20, 2016 (UTC)
Alfwyn's solution - simply adding a "frameless" attribute - to the link has two downsides:
  • It relies on the image having the appropriate size. If the image is too small it will be scaled up. And:
  • It ignores the image size parameter. If a user specifies that parameter it is silently dropped.
If neither of these points is a problem, then Alfwyn's solution is better than mine. Mazn (talk) 16:03, January 20, 2016 (UTC)
As far as I can see it sets a maximum size, but leaves smaller images alone (see Anna's gold locket). It does ignore the image size paramater though. It along with others got dropped by the conversion (the portabe infobox image tag supports neither, what I use to limit the image and add an icon is a hack). We haven't used the image size parameter on too many pages. It is probably a bit a style question wether we want to simplify stuff a bit on the way or be strictly backward compatible, so not sure. --Alfwyn (talk) 16:20, January 20, 2016 (UTC)
Wait! So "frameless" prevents the image from being scaled up? If that's the case, I'd suggest we do drop the image size parameter entirely and use your solution. Mazn (talk) 16:28, January 20, 2016 (UTC)
Yup. It clearly says so here: "showing an enlargement of the stored image is not possible." In that case Alfwyn's solution is clearly superior to mine. Yes, my solution allows for use of the image size but it does so by using #imgw which is an expensive parser function. Avoiding expensive functions is a good practice. It puts less strain on Wikia's servers and thus speeds up page rendering.
Shall I edit Template:Infobox weapon one last time and replace my solution with frameless? Mazn (talk) 16:47, January 20, 2016 (UTC)

Looks like {{{image size|frameless{{!}}242x300px}}} can combine the frameless approach with the image size parameter. Going through possibilities, one of the major problems here for me is figuring out exactly what the conversion changed and what the actual usage on the pages is. --Alfwyn (talk) 16:57, January 20, 2016 (UTC)

Nice. That doesn't scale down image size if it's too large though. How about:
{{#if: {{{image size|}}}
| {{#ifexpr: {{{image size}}} > 242
  | frameless{{!}}242x300px
  | {{{image size}}}
  }}
| frameless{{!}}242x300px
}}

Although I may have just not noticed it if something like this exists, I feel there should be a key (even just a sentence) on the Fallout 4 quests page describing what the asterisks and slashes mean. While people will likely be able to assume they're for rewards dictated by speech checks, having something that actually says this may be a good idea.

Change to Dangerous Minds infobox[]

Regarding this change, there was a fairly long discussion about the merge, during which Alfwyn discovered the pip-boy icon for the "Shattered" quest was actually just a different frame in the animation from the one for the "Dangerous Minds" quest.

As far as we could tell, the "Shattered" quest could never appear in the quest log, since it had no log entries in the quest data.

I was wondering if it would make more sense to use a screenshot from the quest in the footer image. I'm sure I've seen this done elsewhere, but can't seem to find any examples at the moment.

Aya42 (talk) 18:26, January 25, 2016 (UTC)

Need a second opinion[]

Sorry to disturb, but could you take a quick look at the last few edits on this page?

I thought Paladin117's reverting of RShepard227's changes was a tad harsh, given that some of it (e.g. the part about Curie being able to contract the disease for the player) seemed okay to me. The strategy parts (mostly just about which weapons to use) seemed inappropriate, but the parts about when the mole rats attack seemed sufficiently objective to be moved into the "Detailed Walkthrough" section.

I don't want to get involved in an edit war, so perhaps you could offer your opinion as to which of the last few edits were appropriate. Aya42 (talk) 18:12, January 26, 2016 (UTC)

"Notable Content" template suggestion[]

Hi! Just a suggestion from a local noob: I was wondering how hard it would be to make the "More..." link on the notable content template more visible and in a more prominent/logical place? I often fail to notice that there's "more" and don't even realize it until I hit edit and then the Bug / Note / etc that I was going to place is actually already there and just wasn't appearing on the page. I think if the [More...] link appeared at the *bottom* of the list (where the next entry would have been if it wasn't hidden) then it would be easier to find at the time the user is most likely to be looking for it? Or at least if it was somehow more prominent -- as it is it looks like part of the first entry. Cattlesquat (talk) 14:31, January 29, 2016 (UTC)

Sole Survivor gender and sex issue[]

Excuse me,

I'd like to request that my original edit of the Sole Survivor page be restored. Looking at the dictionary definitions of the terms "gender" and "sex" (as generously provided by Google), a clear difference is made in that gender refers to societal and personality aspects of a person, whereas sex refers to the physical state of a person's reproductive organs.
I acknowledge that these aspects are tied together in Fallout 4, in that you can't change one without changing the other, but that is only due to the fact that cisgender male and female characters are the only options provided to the player. Regardless of this, characters whose gender and sex traditionally do not match are still included in the game.
One such character is KL-E-0, who previously described herself (to my knowldege, the line has been removed due to controversy over all responses insinuating intolerance, which caused controversy) as "designated Assaultron at creation" but after achieving sentience refers to herself as a woman. I believe the existence of non-binary individuals in the game constitutes the acknowledgement of gender and sex as separate aspects of a person.
Additionally, in the character creator, if the player edits their spouse's appearance in any way and then does not choose to play as them, their spouse will retain those changes, and indeed the changes will be applied to Shaun.
Therefore, I believe that my edit to the Sole Survivor page is accurate and valid in its entirety, and request that it be restored.

Thank you,
DominateEye (talk) 23:53, January 30, 2016 (UTC)

I've been waiting for a response on this for a few days now. Whenever you have the time, could you please get back to me on this? Thanks in advance.
DominateEye (talk) 23:44, February 2, 2016 (UTC)

Ah, right, I missed that change somehow, must have been semi-spacing out again. Yeah, I think that works as a middle ground. Since there's no explicit gender selection option, we really have no idea what gender the SS identifies as, regardless of the pronoun use in-game as there's always the possibility that people are unintentionally misgendering them. We definitely do have control over their sex, though, so that works for me. Cheers!

Huge range blocks[]

Just noticed you blocked 178.162.0.0/16 which seems somewhat extreme. You are aware that's over 64,000 IP addresses spanning several different ISPs in at least two different countries? Aya42 (talk) 17:26, February 5, 2016 (UTC)

That many? I followed a previous example block from a Wikia staff member. Let me take up with him then. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 17:29, February 5, 2016 (UTC)
Well, it's up to 65,536, but due to the technicalities of CIDR, not all will be valid IP addresses. There's a useful table on that WP page which explains the notation, but if, for example, all the addresses were of the form 178.162.1.x, then blocking 178.162.1.0/24 would be sufficient.
You can get a better idea by searching RIPE, so if one of the addresses was 178.162.1.1, a search tells you that all addresses from 178.162.0.0 to 178.162.7.255 are allocated to an ISP in Russia called Credolink, so you could block all of those with 178.162.0.0/21, but that's still likely to block many legitimate users.
Due to the shortage of IP4 addresses, it's increasingly uncommon for people to have static IP addresses, which makes IP-based blocking increasingly worthless. When the addresses are recycled, you're effectively blocking people you didn't intend to. Probably not a big deal if the block only lasts a few days, but probably inappropriate for infinite duration. Aya42 (talk) 15:45, February 6, 2016 (UTC)
I see you changed the duration to a month, which seems reasonable, although you might want to revisit some of the existing infinite range blocks as well. Aya42 (talk) 19:21, February 6, 2016 (UTC)
I'll do that. How did I do on the change (IP change) of that most recent range block? Jspoel Speech Jspoel 19:24, February 6, 2016 (UTC)

( Without knowing which IP address(es) this particular user was using, it's tough to tell. I'll assume it was more than one address of the form 178.162.216.x, in which case 178.162.216.0/24 is probably best for now, since you're only blocking 256 addresses, although, if that is the case, you also ought to remove the block on 178.162.0.0/16.

I was reading through what Callofduty4 said, and I'm not sure what Wikia's policies are on IP blocking, but looking at Wikipedia's guidelines, even a three month block on an a.b.0.0/16 range seems a little extreme for a first offense. If, as he said, "Just make sure no legitimate users are on the range", you're never gonna know what new legitimate users might use that range in the future.

Ultimately, the point of IP-based blocking is to make it just long enough for the user to give up and move on somewhere else, while not being too long to prevent legitimate users from creating accounts, and sometimes 24 hours may be enough.

Obviously, the part which states...

...the block should be extended (with the 'anon-only' option selected) as long as is necessary to prevent further disruption.

...isn't gonna help where malicious users are creating new accounts from those ranges, but it may be enough to deter users who are making edits anonymously.

Having said all that, I just noticed that Wikipedia's block list has all of 178.162.128.0 thru 178.162.255.255 as being blocked until 2019 for...

Colocators containing Zenmate and being abused

...so you may have issues with other addresses in that range in the future. Aya42 (talk) 21:15, February 6, 2016 (UTC)

Image categories[]

Good morning!

I was wondering how to categorize images such as (MAG)_Wasteland_Survival_Guide_in_Crater_House.jpg and Wsg_1_farming_location.jpg. Should they go with the Category:Fallout 4 location images and Category:Fallout 4 miscellaneous item images tag or only with both the location image tag? I believe in the case of this kind of magazine picture we should only use the location image tag but do we have the same answer when speaking about images from the Teddy Bear gallery?

In the end I think the question is: 'Do we only want clean and cropped images in the 'miscellaneous item images' category or do we also accept pictures of miscellaneous items at locations where we can found them.

Although they're already globally blocked across the ocean, you might as well get his/her new IP with a checkuser tool, then apply the range block to their current status to make them harder coming back to annoy us. --吉野Cassie Talk to me! ✿ 05:12, March 8, 2016 (UTC)

RE: Fallout Shelter names[]

I am getting the names directly from the Android version of the game, via the Survival Guide. In regards to BoS uniform, it is listed as BoS Uniform. As for the variants, I don't know what they are. Hi, I'm assuming it was you who left me the message about not capitalizing trogs and wildmen (if not, hopefully you'll answer my question anyway). I'm fairly new to this wikia editing thing, and I figure it was easiest to just ask about proper etiquette. In a case of a comment like that, if I wanted to respond, would I just respond directly to that message, or leave a message for the person who left one for me (like I'm doing now). Mostly I just would like to not accidentally snub anyone, nor annoy anyone by responding in an inappropriate manner. Thanks! Obax42 (talk) 07:02, March 14, 2016 (UTC)

Automatron[]

Why not? We've done the same thing for a simple quest of the same name, and the holotape is just as interactive, possibly more. Paladin117>>iff bored; 17:42, March 16, 2016 (UTC)

Why wouldn't people just search "Automatron" and then click "Automatron (add-on)", which will probably be the first result? That's what they've done for every other add-on. Paladin117>>iff bored; 17:54, March 16, 2016 (UTC)
I just don't understand why you have to be inconsistent and make this add-on the one exemption to how we handle add-ons' disambiguation. Paladin117>>iff bored; 18:30, March 16, 2016 (UTC)
So, can I move it back to fall in line with Operation: Anchorage, The Pitt, Point Lookout, Mothership Zeta, Old World Blues, Lonesome Road, and Far Harbor? Paladin117>>iff bored; 17:21, March 17, 2016 (UTC)

Automatron images[]

Since I never really was involved in releases before, there was something I was hoping to ask. As far as I can tell, "pre-release screenshots" are mostly for screenshots released by Bethesda themselves, correct? Like the ones on their official site? Paladin117>>iff bored; 02:22, March 19, 2016 (UTC)

The Ada image actually is from Bethesda's twitter account. The main reason I ask this is because I realized I could get a better quality version from the trailer and was unsure of what to do. Paladin117>>iff bored; 02:34, March 19, 2016 (UTC)

Discussions[]

Hey, I noticed that discussions were added under every article, and Wikia made sure that it looks like the discussions are part of the article space. Can't say I like it and I doubt most people like it to see that some guy saying he's getting married looks like it's part of our articles. I experimented a bit and found a way to somewhat solve this issue. I was thinking of asking a bot to add a similar edit to this one http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Provisioner?diff=2541662&oldid=2541657 on every article before the "[[Category". What do you think? I know it's far from optimal, but this way at least, it doesn't look like it's part of the article. Or maybe we could add some lines before that large space to make it even more clear. - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 00:17, March 21, 2016 (UTC)

I agree your ideas are better solutions, but I don't think we can do them, and I wouldn't count on any cooperation from Wikia... I think my proposition is the best solution of the options that are available to us. Or maybe Digital Utopia has a better plan? - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 00:55, March 21, 2016 (UTC)
You can always ask, but i'm 99.9999% sure they won't give a damn. Wikia simply never cares if they push an update and no-one likes it. My proposition is hideous, but at least it doesn't infect the article itself. Right now, Wikia even made the layout to make it look like article text, not only by placing it before the categories, but even by adding a header that has the exact same layout as the other headers in the article. - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 01:03, March 21, 2016 (UTC)
Can you please keep me updated on the outcome of the talks? In the mean time, I'll think a bit of possibly better methods than the endless blanks. - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 01:20, March 21, 2016 (UTC)

Fallout 4 holodisk/note article creation template update[]

I noticed your update to Zoe's diary which has me wondering whether it would be appropriate to update the Fo4 holodisk/note article creation template. Currently, it instructs the contributor to insert the location and description in the opening section. That seemed inconsistent with other articles on this site, but I am a relatively new contributor, so I followed the template. However, your edit showed me that my original instinct was correct. Do you think the template should be changed to reflect the desired Location section?

When I did this quest, I thought the subtitles spelled his name as "General Cage", but it's been a while and I don't remember clearly. If you haven't, you can just go to the tour bot and ask for a history on Boston Common. The dialog is really good from what I remember. I think there is another one in the area you can activate if the first one somehow gets destroyed, unless you can just pull the dialogue from the Creation Kit. I don't have a PC that can support Fallout 4 yet, so I'm not sure how any of that works. JMA4269 (talk) 22:08, April 28, 2016 (UTC)

Use of the Notable content template in bug sections[]

Hey Js, I've noticed on several pages containing bug sections the addition/use of the notable content templates for said sections when the number of bugs greatly exceeds the amount of content actually in the article. I like the use of the template this way, as it helps streamline articles that tend to be particularly problematic, however given that the notable content template rotates between entries, I fear that users who encounter a bug and come to the wiki looking for a potential solution/validation for said bug will have difficulty finding it lest they go in and directly edit the page themselves.

Instead of a notable content template, would it be possible for us to make bug sections collapsible? This way it's not bogging down the load time/unnecessarily extending the length of an article, but all content will still be visible when opened? ---bleep196- (talk) 19:00, April 28, 2016 (UTC)

Ah, my apologies I got confused. Is there any way for us to nest bullet/sub points in the notable content template? I like the idea of the template, as it reduces the volume of the page while making it still visible (a collapsible could easily be missed) and since we can scroll through it I would like to implement it on some of the pages with larger numbers of bugs in a section. If not I will need to figure out a way to incorporate solutions/elaborations without making bugs that have sub bullets into one long paragraph.
Yeah, when I'm active I can keep an eye on overdue bugs and make sure to go through and verify/remove the ones that I can/can't replicate in game. Unfortunately, the past couple months I have been tied up with a heavy load of school work since this is my last semester in college. Hopefully now that summer approaches, I will be able to keep things in check. ---bleep196- (talk) 20:56, April 29, 2016 (UTC)
Scratch my previous question, I just noticed that nesting sub bullets is a feature of the notable content template. I'm going to initiate a discussion and make a proposition to set in stone in the bug policies that when an article has more than 5 bugs on the page, regardless of whether said bugs are verified or not, the notable content template should be used to reduce the clutter and length of the page. ---bleep196- (talk) 21:46, April 29, 2016 (UTC)

NDA[]

Hi J.

Disclaimer - this is not legal advice.

As a matter of law, we're not bound by the NDA - we didn't sign it or agree to it personally, so we're not required to follow it. The user who did post the content probably did, and they're personally breaching the NDA. We might be in trouble if we were inducing someone to breach it.

That said, We should remove any beta content, and there's lots of good reasons.

Firstly, as a courtesy to Bethesda. This isn't official content - at least not yet. Becoming a repository for it may bring negative attention and they might start asking us to remove other stuff we might want to keep (art book pages, etc).

Second, for the user's own good. We shouldn't help or encourage them to break the NDA, they're putting themselves at risk of getting sued and losing access to the game. We should for their own good remove it and tell them to stop.

Third, for our own editorial reasons. We cannot immediately verify or confirm the content, so we don't know if its true. The only way we could find out is to induce someone to breach their contract - if we're encouraging someone to do that, then we're in potential legal trouble.

So yes, remove without question, the faster the better. Agent c (talk) 01:46, May 8, 2016 (UTC)

Hey J, I suspect this user MattKenway probably had a sock in the chat right now due to their similarities, see if you could match him to DarkVaultBoi111, thanks. --吉野Cassie ~可愛いの猫 04:45, May 10, 2016 (UTC)

Refresh a database dump request[]

Hi there! Is it possible to refresh a database dump for fallout.wikia.com?

It looks like last one here http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Statistics from 2015-07-24 22:54:45, almost one year old.

(I just want to be able to surf during long flight = )

Thanks! --Dro-pro (talk) 07:46, May 10, 2016 (UTC)

Vector Images[]

I recently vectorized the Pre-war flag of the USA. Should I replace the bitmap version with the vector version? SaintExcellence (talk) 22:08, May 13, 2016 (UTC)

Far Harbor[]

Noticed the sentence on the Far Harbor page, how beta content cannot be on the page. One could assume most of the content from the beta will be in the final release, right?

All I am asking is: since it is known what will be in the add-on, can it be temporary stored into a user's sandbox? It does not break the rules, right? ☢ Energy X ☣ 11:44, May 14, 2016 (UTC)

Good enough, I say. ☢ Energy X ☣ 20:37, May 15, 2016 (UTC)

Content[]

Is it time to start adding the content left by people, which was undone? It's not much time until the add-on is released. Besides, I believe any beta content that gets removed will count as cut content, no? ☢ Energy X ☣ 21:23, May 18, 2016 (UTC)

Begin again, let go. Just like the time before Fallout 4 was released. Ah, those were the days. ☢ Energy X ☣ 21:39, May 18, 2016 (UTC)

Marine armor[]

Why delete it? http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Log?type=delete&page=File%3AFo4fh-nate-marine-armor.jpg --SwoleRat (talk) 23:05, May 19, 2016 (UTC)

Far Harbor: Subcategories[]

Long time no talk... I have a question: do we use a Far Harbor: Map Marker images or do we use the Fallout 4: Map Marker images? I have those files in mind and I don't know how to proceed.

Files: [[:File:Cranberry_island.png]] and [[:File:Fallout 4 (3).png]]

I'm done sorting the latest images for Far Harbor. I added several subcategories to Category:Far Harbor images. For now those subcategories only contain a few elements but they could come useful when we start having a lot more images. It also fits well in the category tree of Category:Fallout 4 images. --YoDsanklai (talk) 16:36, May 21, 2016 (UTC)
