Turns out they look pretty dodgy on mobile, and we were wondtering, because the information shared on them is a simple check or X, whether we could just turn these into mini infoboxes? Shareif, a colleague of mine whom you may already know, is taking a stab at these, and we just wondered if you'd take a look at his results in a day or so?

A lovely early gift for Xmas[]

Hello!

Energy told me that you may find some use for these frames that were extracted from one of the SWF files from Fallout 4's game files (specifically, dialoguemenu.swf).

If you combine them all into a .gif, they form the animation that plays when you successfully complete a charisma-based speech check. Energy told me that some of those images were infobox-worthy, so, if there really are any worthy enough, let me know which and I'll be glad to upload them and put them on the infobox!

I will have the .gif uploaded onto the same album in the next few days, if it's also needed.

Happy trails!

Okay :) Well... if there are problems with the converted templates, I wouldn't notice them. I haven't been around long enough. But for future reference: I'm a programmer by trade. I'm fluent with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and jQuery and wikitext - including templates - but I come from non-Wikia mediawiki projects so I have a few gaps there. I wasn't familiar with the infobox extension until yesterday e.g. And I'm itching for an opportunity to learn Lua. I've tinkered with it on occasion but it's high time to learn it properly. So if you have anything of the sort, throw it my way! And I'll keep an eye out for things that could be improved. Mazn (talk) 17:43, December 13, 2015 (UTC)

Compressed infobox[]

I am using the VisualEditor to edit the infobox and add the image there, im not making any other changes to the infobox. Does it automatically compress the infobox? After that I delete the "infobox image needed" request by deleting it, is this okay?

Also how does the compressing look like? Im not seeing any changes on my part (Using Cyberfox browser). Should I use the normal edit feature instead of VisualEditor?

Nahkis (talk) 13:54, December 13, 2015 (UTC)

It definitely is the visual editor in conjunction with portable infoboxes, just did some testing. It gives a new option to fill in the fields of the infobox which isn't available otherwise, which is responsible for the compressing (putting all paramters on one line when viewed in source mode). --Alfwyn (talk) 14:30, December 13, 2015 (UTC)

Infobox and images[]

I am sorry I haven't gotten back sooner, I've had a nightmare week! So basically the changes are noted here. I have updated the infobox so that it will only display properly now when those classes are added/changed. Once we get the location infobox running I can update the rest in no time at all. As for the image, its 5K which shouldn't be a problem with loading times as the wiki caches smaller resolutions and only displays the larger version on request. - AbedecainAbedecains Cake - Talk and maybe you'll get cake! 17:57, December 13, 2015 (UTC)

It's a separate wiki CzechOut made to make editing the infobox css easier as explained here. I'll see if I can get them to give me access or if they will edit it. - AbedecainAbedecains Cake - Talk and maybe you'll get cake! 15:19, December 16, 2015 (UTC)

Editing Infoboxes[]

When I checked out the infoboxes, the implementation looked fine to me, I did notice something else though: Using and editing infoboxes is rather awkward.

  • At the top of the regular editor there's an extensive menu with presets. In theory that's good. Having pre-configured pages with infoboxes for quest, items, etc. is very helpful. The way you've integrated them into the editor not so much. For starters, the menu is squeezed into a small area at the top and even has to be expanded to be seen in its entirety. You don't want to barricade the editor ofc and so you have to keep the size to a minimum, I understand that. But as a consequence the menu is sort of easy to miss; there's no explanation for any of its entries and there are no examples of how one of those pages should look when completed either. Worst of all: The user is already on the edit page so if s/he clicks on one of those templates any edits made so far are obliterated. Yikes! This menu seems to be designed for the exclusive benefit of people who are already insiders of this wiki and know what they get when they click on them. If it's your general policy that only experienced users should start new pages, that's fine, but if you also want newbies to chime in, this doesn't work so well.
    My suggestion would be to move the menu from MediaWiki:Newarticletext to MediaWiki:Noarticletext and expand it to a full size page with descriptions, screenshots and links to example pages. MediaWiki:Newarticletext should only contain a redirect to make sure the user has seen (or chosen to ignore) the templates. I can set up a little demo to give you a more specific idea of what I mean.
  • The next thing that jumped out at me is how difficult it is to edit the infoboxes. The very first parameters of {{Infobox_armor_gamebryo}} e.g. are game, type and icon - all of which require very specific predefined values a newbie cannot guess. This is where MediaWiki:Newarticletext could actually be useful by providing a link to the documentation of {{Infobox_armor_gamebryo}}. And since newbies are likely to use the visual editor instead, I'd also recommend pulling in the parameter documentation with JavaScript and add it to tooltips in the popup editor.
  • And lastly, as a newbie - maybe not to wikis in general but definitely to this one - I wonder how the marker image parameters are generated... Would I just take a screenshot in-game and post it here? They all seem to have a certain format... I'm not sure, I'd get this right... Or is adding these image something you'd rather only have a small team of insiders do? My suggestion would be to utilize this amazing map of the Commonwealth you already have and integrate it into the infobox. That would make it possible for editors to simply open the map and place a marker to pinpoint a location. It should be possible to display a small excerpt of the map within the infobox itself and have the entire map - with the marker in question highlighted - in a popup when the user clicks on it.

Mazn (talk) 14:06, December 14, 2015 (UTC)

I've created a test wiki and whipped up a little demo of my first suggestion. just go to w:c:mazntest and call up a non-existing page. If the page is in the article namespace, you'll be given a few choices what to preload into the editor before clicking on "create". Once in the editor you'll no longer see "create page based on template" links but a link to the documentation of the template - unless you chose to start with a blank page. Well, actually it's a link to the creation template - there is no infobox and no infobox documentation - the mockup is simplistic, but you'll get the idea. The demo relies on JavaScript so you'll have to enter Test Mode. Mazn (talk) 14:11, December 15, 2015 (UTC)

Infoboxes update[]

Hey, so for obvious reasons I diverted to Wookieepedia for a few days, in order to help get their infoboxes done prior to release of Episode VII. As you have probably been able to tell, we're basically finished here, aside from three minor templates ({{Infobox}} isn't really an infobox, and will be going away soon) and the outstanding issue of getting the icons back into the upper right of the infobox images. Will be back in a few days, once the Star Wars madness begins to settle down a bit.
czechout    19:47: Wed 16 Dec 2015

Also, I note upthread that you have people offering to help you with putting javascript in infoboxes. To save everyone time, let me kinda gently-yet-firmly advise against that. Javascript isn't necessary with infoboxes and it wouldn't show up on the mobile side, because our mobile skin simply disallows JS outright. Also, all JS has to go through code review these days, and it's always possible that the JS simply might not pass review. So I wouldn't invest time in it, particularly as you've never really used JS before in infoboxes.

Thomas (Fallout 4)[]

Hey, so I think we need to combine, like, five pages into one, but I wanted to get admin input instead of just doing it. There's a character Brother Thomas who is part of the quest Emogene Takes a Lover, but if you go to his location at any time before getting the quest, he isn't named Thomas, but instead Andrew, James, Matthew, or Simon. I've looked in FO4Edit and these guys are all clones of Thomas with their own ID's, but Thomas is the main one and the one that the quest refers to, as well as all voice dialogue that says his name. Anyway, I was thinking we should redirect the other guy's pages to his instead of having Brother Andrew, Brother Simon, Brother James, and Brother Matthew all identical pages. Thoughts? Care to do the honors? --Xernoc (talk) 07:22, December 17, 2015 (UTC)

Power armor (Fallout 4) as disambiguation[]

Hi there. This edit has left me confused. While I understand your removal from the {{Navbox overviews FO4}}, I'm not comfortable with classifying the page Power armor (Fallout 4) as disambiguation, by placing both {{disambig}} and {{for}} on it at the same time.

Firstly, I feel that it is redundant to list the items, as they are already listed at Fallout 4 armor and clothing#Power armor (as put as the parameter of the {{for}} template). Secondly, there is content on the page, and that as I understand it, no content should exist on a disambiguation page.

I intend to boldly remove the {{disambig}} and link list. As above, the reason is that it is redundant due to duplication, as it is covered by {{for|<Fallout 4 armor and clothing#Power armor>}}. If I have misunderstood disambiguation pages according to this wiki's standards, or otherwise you do not agree, please let me know what you think should happen to the page instead. Techhead7890 Talk Contribs 04:58, December 18, 2015 (UTC)

(PS: I believe you have missed some archive items between November 10 and December 11.) (PPS: I am also reminded of this edit summary ("we need this page as an important search term as we have with the other games"). What exactly do you imagine to be the contents of this page? As you have not commented directly on the merge template I put up, I'm left a little confused on what you intend to be placed on the page.) Techhead7890 Talk Contribs 05:06, December 18, 2015 (UTC)

While I feel a little miffed you didn't deign it necessary to respond in any way, despite responding to other users below, I'm writing to let you know I'm interpreting this as implicit acceptance of the editing as suggested above. Techhead7890 Talk Contribs 12:54, December 18, 2015 (UTC)

Glowing Sea (Talk page)[]

There is a lot of conjecture and discussion on the Glowing Sea talk page which I've tried to stop from getting out of hand, generally about the validity of where it is and how it doesn't fit in with the general behaviour of the rest of the nuclear weapons. I have tried to put it to rest, as the Talk page isn't really for long-winded discussions of scientific theory, rather for improvements to the article. Can you please keep an eye on it, as I don't want to keep replying and making the page even longer and more untidy? Mctaff350 (talk) 07:21, December 18, 2015 (UTC)

Added Content[]

Aww, thanks. I'm kinda the perfect storm for data collection right now. My sleep pattern has me staying up til 4am, so there's not much going on in the real world, a lot of my jobs have involved detailed documentation, and I was recently laid off because the business shutdown. I figured I'd put myself to good use. The game just came out so I can see there's a lot to do here on the wiki. I've already done two playthroughs of the game, so spoilers aren't an issue, in fact it's nice to see what content I missed. Glad some of it's noticable. :) --Xernoc (talk) 09:25, December 18, 2015 (UTC)

Yeah, I got those from FO4Edit. Assuming you have FO4Edit, there's two groups of interest: Book, and Terminal. For some terminals that have names, it's easy to find them in the list, just sort by EditorID or Name and scroll til you find it. For others (like those named "Terminal"), I have the game running and go to the location ingame and try to find the terminal I want. Once there, I open up the ~console and left click on the terminal. Most of the time it will give you the ref ID of what you click on, but sometimes it gives you other things, like mist textures that are between you and the terminal. Anyway, once I have that ID, I search in FO4Edit for that FormID. That will give me roughly the EditorID of the terminal, then I can go back to that Terminal grouping that I mentioned at the beginning and scroll to it. For example, all of the terminals in Mahkra Fishpacking plant have the prefix DN081_ before them. Once you've found the Terminal, just look in the right hand pane under "Menu Items" (you may have to scroll down). You can compare what you see there to what you see ingame to get the gist of what goes where. Generally, all of the terminals in a given location have the same prefix, so I don't need to go running around the entire plant trying to find all of the terminal's IDs, I just need to find one and the others will be in the list right next to it.
As for notes, like Russell's note, those are a little easier because they all have names that aren't generic. In that case, open up the "Book" grouping and sort by the third column, Name. Same thing as above when you find it in the list.--Xernoc (talk) 10:03, December 18, 2015 (UTC)
It can't display any images that I know of. Once we get the actual Creation Kit from Bethesda, then we'll have free reign, but for now we gotta make due with the (admittedly pretty good) FO4Edit, which is a 3rd party tool. There's a lot of unknowns still, but once you get used to using it, there's actually quite a bit of info available. I'm still discovering new ways of navigating it. Finding refID's is tough in this setup, but I'm hammering out a pretty good method of finding them. Still can't find Barney Rook's ID, though. He's a tough one. The one on his page is wrong. He and Gristle are the two I'm having trouble with. --Xernoc (talk) 10:49, December 18, 2015 (UTC)
Forgot about holotapes. Yeah, those are under "Quest". All of the voice work is under "Quest", and thus when you play a holotape you are activating it's quest. I hope someone will find an easier way to pinpoint the subtitles, but for now here's my method. If you get the ID for Eddie Winter holotape 0, it's 000ebe77, but that sends you into the Note group. Look at it's EditorID (MS07EddieWinterHolotape00), and you'll see that prefix MS07 - hold that thought. Now we're gonna go to 000544f3, which is the HolotapesQuest, and expand it. Scroll past all of the Dialogue Topics to find MS07 among the EditorIDs. Find the holotape in question, in this case it's MS07cEddieWinterHolotape0 (000D4D98), and look in the right hand pane. Under Actions, you'll find a DIAL id, in this case [DIAL:000E2C4A]. You can either search for that ID, or just look for it within the HolotapeQuest, and expand that Dialog Topic, select the data below it and look in the right hand pane for the subtitles. It's very roundabout, but it works. Hope this helps. I'm gonna go to bed now (it's 5:30AM here), so I'll answer any more questions in a few hours. Cheers! --Xernoc (talk) 11:29, December 18, 2015 (UTC)
Fun fact: once you've found that final piece, note it's FormID, in this case it was 000D4D85. If you've extracted the Voices.ba2 file, then that ID coincides with the filename of that audio, so if you want to create a sound mod, then that's one way to find the correct audio file (at least for voices, sound effects are in Sounds.ba2). --Xernoc (talk) 11:32, December 18, 2015 (UTC)

( So the thing about RefID's is that they're all sorted in FO4Edit by location. They can either be in the Cell or Worldspace groups. Oh, and they usually don't have editor ID's, just the FormID and the Name, but you can't search by name and formids are what we're trying to find in the first place. So what do you do? Well, you could do some educated guessing on which cell they're in. I usually just go to the npc in game and click on them. You gotta be careful when doing that, though, and always double check what ID the game gives you because it might just give the ID of some random mist texture or something that's between you and the NPC. If you're having trouble, I like to use the command "tcl" ingame which turns off clipping and then get right up in their face and click on their liver to get the refid. Overall, I usually have to actually go to the location to get at least one refid so that I know what cell we're working with, and then I can find the other NPC's in FO4Edit because they're sorted by location. --Xernoc (talk) 00:02, December 19, 2015 (UTC)

As an alternative to finding them ingame, as the wiki gets more filled out, you might be able to look up the location on the wiki and search for the EditorID of the cell. For example I was just looking for Henri's ID and went to the page for Sentinel site where he's located and someone has put it's cell name in the info box so I was able to jump right to him instead of going there ingame to find him. --Xernoc (talk) 00:14, December 19, 2015 (UTC)

Activity on the FO4 wiki[]

Thanks for the welcome. I made up the "Defence Turrets" name. I think it's a miscellaneous quest and unless something comes out of the game files, we won't have an official name for it. Should have I kept the draft name? The pages affected by that name change are Defence Turrets, Barney Rook, Salem, Reba II. --YoDsanklai (talk) 10:08, December 18, 2015 (UTC)

I was thinking we need a disambig page for the name Kate, but I'm not sure the best way to do it without breaking a bunch of links. The current page is a character from New Vegas, and I never played that so I'm not sure how often she's likely referenced. Regardless, we've got two Kate's in FO4. Here's a list of all the Kate's I could find on the wiki: Kate, Kate (Fallout Tactics), Kate Isenberg, Kate Tucker, Kate (dog), Smiling Kate. That's not to mention the other varieties of the name, like Katy or Katherine. --Xernoc (talk) 21:10, December 18, 2015 (UTC)

MediaWiki:Noarticletext[]

I did some more work on my redesign suggestion for MediaWiki:Noarticletext. As before, go to my test wiki and call up a missing page in the article namespace. And as before you'll have to enter test mode to see the full thing. The page would theoretically work with the mobile skin as well - i.e. without JavaScript - but for some reason Wikia doesn't seem to want mobile users to create new pages... They show a 404 instead. There's nothing I can do about that, ofc.

Next week - or the week after that - I'll also make a real demo of my in-editor context help for templates. And as for my final suggestion about using real maps in infoboxes: I did read Czechout's comment on the matter. It sure looks like my idea died with that :( Ah, nvm. That's okay. It was just an idea. As far as I can tell, he is created by the quest To the Mattresses Missions as a seventh boss after you've killed Captain Sally. He's not one of the quest objectives, though, so I'm guessing he just shows up after you've completed the quest or something. I'm very curious to find out how he got tagged for a Raider Troubles quest. Anyway, any more info you can give me about him? Have you completed To the Mattresses on the playthrough that you found him? --Xernoc (talk) 19:45, December 20, 2015 (UTC)

Oh yeah, and we have two pages To the Mattresses and To the Mattresses Missions. Xernoc (talk) 19:46, December 20, 2015 (UTC)
That makes sense, no problem. I was just trying to figure it out. The 6 bosses in that mission have the aliases Boss01, Boss02, etc, but Johnny's alias is Boss06b. I think that means he shows up *with* the 6th boss, and even though only the other one needs to be killed for the quest, he's involved in the fight. I'll probably have to go play that mission to figure it out. Thanks for the info. --Xernoc (talk) 23:56, December 20, 2015 (UTC)

Infobox for Radio Stations[]

Can you get someone to create an infobox for Radio stations in Fallout 4 please? An entry place for "logo", a "location/site" picture and a "quests" list are fairly important, but otherwise, they just need something to put in there as the radio station pages have no decent jumplist or at-a-glance info. Much appreciated Mctaff350 (talk) 02:33, December 21, 2015 (UTC)

Page tags[]

Is there a way to search for pages with the "image missing" or "bad image" tags? It seems it should be on the Special:Insights page, but that doesn't really bring up anything, at least for me. I wanna go take a bunch of pictures. --Xernoc (talk) 01:18, December 22, 2015 (UTC)

Merging of 4 pages to Taking Point[]

I merged the following pages Taking Point: Hangman's Alley, Taking Point: Starlight Drive In, Taking Point: Sunshine Tidings Co-op, Taking Point: Taffington Boathouse in the Taking Point quest page. There is room for improvements, rephrasing and embellishing the page but all unique content has been backed up and is associated with the proper location. It seems to me the first 4 pages are now useless and can be removed. --YoDsanklai (talk) 14:47, December 22, 2015 (UTC)

You can ignore the previous message as I turned those pages into redirections like the other Taking Point: LocationName pages. --YoDsanklai (talk) 15:24, December 22, 2015 (UTC)

Images[]

What do you mean by transparent? Is there a certain method of taking a screenshot? --Xernoc (talk) 22:12, December 22, 2015 (UTC)

Forgive my ignorance, but I'm not much of a photo editor. I'm pretty good at adding text and making things into gifs, but I'm not sure how to cut something out of a photo. I have GIMP if you know the name of a tool that does it. I'm certainly willing to do it when I figure out how. --Xernoc (talk) 22:17, December 22, 2015 (UTC)
I think I figured it out. How does the 5lb weight look? Is that decent or did I miss something while editing it? -Xernoc (talk) 22:35, December 22, 2015 (UTC)

Image Format[]

Sure, that can be done no problem. By the way, are you supposed to get notifications when someone writes to your talk page? Cause I never have, I just kinda refresh it every so often and see if anything's changed. --Xernoc (talk) 09:38, December 24, 2015 (UTC)

How do you feel about long shots for clothing items? For example, Child of Atom long green rags. Should that be shortened or widened, or are full body shots okay to be tall and skinny? -Xernoc (talk) 09:41, December 24, 2015 (UTC)
Copy that. I'm currently making my way through the Category:Image needed (Fallout 4) page and adding items, with the occasional location if I'm in the mood to find it ingame. Maybe once that's done my next project will be going down Fallout 4 armor and clothing and seeing what pictures I can add/fix. We'll see. Taking pictures while listening to podcasts is a surprisingly fun way to pass the time. --Xernoc (talk) 10:02, December 24, 2015 (UTC)
Darn, here I thought I was being clever by focusing the shot on the clothing. Yeah, I'll include full face. --Xernoc (talk) 17:23, December 24, 2015 (UTC)

Reference ID's[]

I'm a freaking idiot. I didn't realize that in FO4Edit, if you select something, like an npc, it adds a new tab under the right half of the screen so that you can see every other record that references that ID. So, you can go to something like 00002F0E AnnCodman, click on the "Referenced By" tab, then just look for any CELL or ACHR signature and boom, there's her reference id. God, I feel like I wasted so much time hunting down refs manually. Or you can look up any Book, Note, or Terminal and it tells you exactly where to find it. This saves so much time going forward, but boy do I feel stupid. Anyways, I figured you'd find that tidbit useful. --Xernoc (talk) 12:06, December 24, 2015 (UTC)

See, that's why I didn't notice it for so long. You gotta click on an item (that gets referenced) in the left hand pane, and then the tab appears. There's 3 other tabs there all the time: View, Messages, and Information. The fourth one, Referenced By, appears when you select something that gets referenced elsewhere. Go search for AnnCodman to test it out because I know she makes it appear. --Xernoc (talk) 12:57, December 24, 2015 (UTC)

Hey Js, could you check and see if both these users Мертвый Омич and SD Skunk were the same ones, I suspect something due to their similar profile picture prior of Мертвый Омич changing it, along with their spamming behaviour? Laser weapon mods[]

As you may know I'm currently busy trying to add pages for all the weapon mods. I just started with the barrels, but there's a little problem now. At the moment the laser pistol and rifle are separate pages, but in fact they're just variants of the same base weapon. The laser/rifle part of the name just depends on the used mods, which is supported by both weapons having the same base ID. In fact, the base weapon is referred to in-game as simply "laser". The same actually goes for the Institute pistol/rifle and the plasma pistol/rifle.
Because the laser pistol/rifle is the same weapon, they also share the available mods. How should I, on those mod pages, mention for which weapons it is an available mod? "... is a mod for the laser pistol/rifle, the ...", or "... is a mod for the pistol, the Laser rifle (Fallout 4), the ...", or should we merge those pages into one so that we can refer to them as simply laser weapons (Fallout 4)?
- FDekker talk 13:56, December 24, 2015 (UTC)

The laser and plasma sets only have a pistol and a rifle, but the plasma set also has a plasma scattergun and a plasma thrower. They currently have their own page, but it was suggested that they be merged into plasma pistol, even though the plasma rifle is still separate. But in the end, it's just the plasma, and the suffix is determined by the mods used.
- FDekker talk 15:04, December 24, 2015 (UTC)
I'm working on it right now.
- FDekker talk 15:17, December 24, 2015 (UTC)
I've added the page: Plasma weapons (Fallout 4). I wasn't able to add multiple images to the infobox like on this page because this infobox doesn't support. I'd imagine you'll directly see loads of things that could be improved with your Wikia expertise ;-), and I'll be glad to receive those points of improvement. Sadly I don't exactly have time to properly merge the other pages into the new one because I'll have to leave in a few minutes for Christmas dinner. I hope the page is at least not too sub-standard quality. Oh, and merry Christmas!

Settlement constructions[]

Do we want separate pages for everything that can be built in a settlement? I ran across the Power counter page, but I can't find any other pages like it. Looks like everything's documented on Fallout 4 settlements, is it worth having individual pages? --Xernoc (talk) 12:12, December 25, 2015 (UTC)

Relay tower terminal entries[]

Talking about relay towers, I think this page is rather redundant: Relay tower 0MC-810 terminal entries. The page is not of any value to the location and I think it should be deleted, would you agree? Oh, en jij ook vrolijk kerstfeest!
- FDekker talk 16:48, December 25, 2015 (UTC)

Then I'll add the pages for the other relay towers in time. Also, two small questions because I haven't been able to figure these out: what is the tag for 'better image needed'; and what would be the most proper infobox for radio stations, if any?
- FDekker talk 16:57, December 25, 2015 (UTC)
I'm looking at it now. Is there such a thing as a sandbox where I can experiment?
- FDekker talk 17:18, December 25, 2015 (UTC)
Hmm, not sure. Most of those locations are pretty empty, so the infobox is as well. This infobox is more image than info: Separated family radio signal. - FDekker talk 23:03, December 25, 2015 (UTC)

Relay tower "0DB-512" terminal entries deletion[]

Bottlecap[]

Hey, I see the image flag on the Bottlecap (Fallout 4) page. Any ideas for how to get a better photo? It's not an item you can inspect in inventory. I ended up spawning a bunch of them around me ingame and getting as close as possible with the freecam. Can't figure out a way to get a better photo. --Xernoc (talk) 02:02, December 27, 2015 (UTC)

That's what I did, and that's the image on the page. If it's a bad image do you have any other ideas on how to get a better one? Or do you know any tricks for controlling the freecam with more precision? That's as close as I could get. --Xernoc (talk) 02:21, December 27, 2015 (UTC)

Fallout Shelter[]

Hello, I am not currently an editor here but I do play Fallout, and I had some things I wanted to ask you. First, are you guys documenting any dialogue from Fallout Shelter? I've seen .txt files on here from the main games but nothing similar from Fallout Shelter which had me a bit confused. I can probably build up a page for dialogue if you do not have one already. I also wanted to suggest that you put some sort of staff tab on your navigation bar. Special:Listusers can be used of course, but not everyone knows about that. The welcome message works but it would still be nice if you linked your staff from somewhere more noticeable. Thanks! —Atvelonis (talk) 02:04, December 27, 2015 (UTC)

Ah, I missed that, thank you. I did not think to look there for staff. Do you have a separate page for dialogue in the wasteland or should I just add that to that page as well? Thanks again. —Atvelonis (talk) 02:25, December 27, 2015 (UTC)

Icons needed[]

Hold up, are you talking about icons or images? On War Never Changes there's the big image in black&white, but there's an icon that's in color. What are the the things that infobox refers to as an icon? For that matter, where do they show up? The icon is listed in the infobox if I look at the page code, but I can't actually see where it shows up since the achievement has a second infobox. --Xernoc (talk) 02:02, December 28, 2015 (UTC)

Gotcha, I'll edit out the grey. I just did Shattered, but I'll redo it no problem. What are icons supposed to be, though? Are those just screencaps of the achievement on the Steam interface? --Xernoc (talk) 02:40, December 28, 2015 (UTC)
How does Shattered look now? As for icon, I'm referring to the line in the infobox. There's an "image" line and an "icon" line. Are we supposed to have icons for every page or is that line only for pages with achievements? --Xernoc (talk) 02:45, December 28, 2015 (UTC)
Wow you type fast. We need, like, a chatbox or something. Creating the outline wasn't too hard, just select with the magic wand then shrink the selection by a few pixels. Unless that's not what we're going for. --Xernoc (talk) 02:49, December 28, 2015 (UTC)

(Sounds good, I'll await your reply tomorrow. I'll leave these links, though. Do you like [1], [2], [3], or [4]. That last one I don't think is what we want, but that's what happened when I set the border to five. All of the pictures are 500x400, but if we need to adjust that's cool too. Once I get a good idea of what you're wanting I can pump them out. It's definitely better to sort this out before I do a bunch of poor ones. --Xernoc (talk) 03:08, December 28, 2015 (UTC)

So, I see you've done most of the images anyway. I still wanna know if mine were what you were going for. I assume #2 would have been just fine. Outlines and dealing with black/white photos isn't difficult, figuring out the unwritten rules of the wiki is the hard part. --Xernoc (talk) 22:05, December 28, 2015 (UTC)
Nah, motivation's good. I was thinking of jumping back into FO4Edit instead of pictures for a bit anyway. I'm thinking quest stages. Oh, and the pictures look great. Personally, I kinda prefer them in black/white instead of with some color. In game they are whatever color you've set for your pipboy display, so I personally think it looks better to use that. --Xernoc (talk) 22:28, December 28, 2015 (UTC)

Concept art[]

Quest stages[]

How fleshed out should the quest stages table be? A lot of these quests have about twice as many stages as actually get on the table because they're either dialogue triggers or optional stages if the player has bypassed part of the quest. Should I include these too or just kinda use judgement to determine if something's worthy of being mentioned? --Xernoc (talk) 23:20, December 28, 2015 (UTC)

Fallon's department store location?[]

You just noted Fallon's department store to be part of the General Atomics Galleria. Are you certain about this? The two locations aren't exactly close on the map, and the Prima guide lists it as "[6.12] Fallons Department Store (West Roxbury Township)".

Extra whitespaces[]

I'm currently writing a page for a series of terminal entries. One of the entries is a table that is formatted by whitespaces, like so:

Transcript
     Column     Column     Column
Row  A          B          C
Row  A          B          C

Without the pre HTML-tags the whitespaces collapse making it look like this:

Transcript

Column Column Column
Row A B C
Row A B C

How can I make sure the terminal entry remains legible? Using non-breaking spaces (& nbsp;) seems like a very messy solution to me.
- FDekker talk 15:09, December 31, 2015 (UTC)

I put those links in to see if there was a wiki page for them, and they did not. Then I went back in to remove the links and they had already been removed and went hit publish again the links were gone, so I left it as the links were no longer there.

Hello! I found some problems in the infobox. In the Monobook blocks of text cover the infobox. It is not visible, but it becomes impossible to select text in the template.

This is easily remedied by adding this code to the MediaWiki:Monobook.css:

.mw-content-text > ul ul > li,
.mw-content-text > ol ul > li,
.mw-content-text > dl ul > li,
.mw-collapsible ul > li,
.va-table ul > li,
h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6 {

Walkthroughs[]

Yes, I am already well aware how you feel about things that have "been her for a long time" and how old stuff should be "an exception to the rule" however, a rule is a rule. For example, I might say it should be an exception to the rule "don't post porn in chat" as long as it is porn I like, but that would be stupid and arrogant because it is not my place to chose when the rules end.

  1. Walkthroughs are strategy, which we do not handle. That is a fact. Want to change that rule? Make a forum and see if people agree.
  2. Those pages were not even walkthroughs, thus had misleading and incorrect titles (which I believe is also against our rules). They were lists of quests, which we already, have pages for. As for being on the main page, I am well aware that there are links under the portal sections, however as Porter made the portals incredibly hard to understand, it is not really in my power to change that.

I am going to be blunt. You can disagree, that is fine, but I'm not going to spend another year with you playing your "I consider them an exception to the rule" nostalgia. If you disagree with an edit I make either;

  1. Show me a rule that proves I am wrong, at which place I will happily stand back.
  2. Make a forum to discuss the issue, so that the rule can be changed to allow your exceptions.

Now, if memory serves we already had a nice, long, painful discussion on walkthroughs which ended with the consensus of "walkthroughs are not allowed. Put them in userspace if you want them, otherwise they're gone."
It is 2016. Stop using "it has been her for a long time" as an excuse, because last I checked this is a wiki for a game where basically the whole moral is blindly clinging to the past is wrong. JASPER//"Do you like hurting other people?"UserRichard 23:13, January 4, 2016 (UTC)

I am talking specifically about the portal links, which like everything Porter gave us, are chaos. As for "looking for things to add, instead of things to delete" are you trying to imply we should never delete anything from the wiki? I'll bear that in mind next time you delete an article. JASPER//"Do you like hurting other people?"UserRichard 23:22, January 4, 2016 (UTC)

I don't have time to read Jasper's response in detail, but I think there is a middle ground. We can structure the "quest" pages, which already exist, to serve the purpose that the walkthrough pages were.

Most of them werent an actual walkthrough as the term is used, they're just a list of selected quests. Agent c (talk) 00:52, January 5, 2016 (UTC)

Not sure were to put this in a distributed discussion, so I just put it here. I think the deleted pages should be restored, at least for the time being. As long as we don't have that link on the FO4 portal, that page won't get created over and over and there is in my opinion no need for a speedy deletion of the other walkthrough pages. I can't see any policy against walkthrougs in the content policy (in fact we have a walkthrough on every quest page). So if this comes down to semantics, I don't think that walkthrough equals opinionated guide. For me the remaining question is, if the content is useful and objective. --Alfwyn (talk) 16:15, January 5, 2016 (UTC)

Usage vs. Copypaste in Template Documentation[]

Why is there a Usage and a Copypaste section in a lot of the template documentation? As far as I can tell the Usage section is quite useless on pages where a Copypaste section is present. Did you add the Copypaste section to keep the Usage section as short as possible?

This question ties directly into the script that's supposed to show template documentation in the editor btw. Both the Usage and the Copypaste section are currently rather difficult to evaluate programmatically and I was wondering if there was room for improvement Mazn (talk) 18:07, January 5, 2016 (UTC)

I'll give an example. That'll make it clearer, I hope. Let's take a look at Template:Docparam. It has no Copypaste section - only a Usage section:
{{Docparam|name=parameter|req=yes|desc=description}}
This is useful both as an example of how the template works as well as copypaste code. This works very well.
Now here's a less pretty example form Template:Infobox_quest. This documentation has both a Usage and Copypaste section. This is the Usage section:
{{Infobox quest
<!-- insert parameters -->
}}
This is neither an instructive example of how to use the template nor useful as copypaste code. This is pretty much useless. The really useful examples are at the bottom of the page in the Copypaste section. So why have both sections? Why not ditch the Usage section and replace it with the Copypaste section? Because the Usage section would grow too long?
I can cobble together an improved version of the page if that helps illustrate my point. Just let me know! Mazn (talk) 19:03, January 5, 2016 (UTC)

Infobox[]

Hey, quick question about infoboxes. What exactly does the "type" line do? Doesn't appear to make any change on the page. Is there some sorting mechanism that I'm missing? --Xernoc (talk) 21:54, January 5, 2016 (UTC)

Ah! It changes the header of the infobox. Perfect. That's what I needed to know. And thanks for the template link, I'll take a look through sometime if I get around to verifying infoboxes. --Xernoc (talk) 22:07, January 5, 2016 (UTC)

Xp[]

Hey, really insignificant question, but how is XP capitalized? I was under the impression that capital letters are generally avoided, but I've just been informed that FNV/FO3 quests all have capital XP in their infoboxes. Is their a logic to this? --Xernoc (talk) 00:02, January 6, 2016 (UTC)

Ok, I guess. Just looks strange to me. Suddenly two capital letters next to each other among all lower case. --Xernoc (talk) 00:05, January 6, 2016 (UTC)

Happy new year![]

I would like to use the Christmas/New Year-wishes-tradition, though I'm a week late, to thank those around me who kept this wiki and daily life more fun for me during the past year. Everything just seems so normal and evident that we are here almost every day, yet it's very worthwhile to consider for a moment how wonderful it is to have people like you around me, making editing and being on chat a lot more enjoyable. I would also like to use this opportunity to wish a happy and healthy new year for you and everyone around you who is dear to you. I hope you'll have a great and healthy new year in which all your wishes may come true! - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 00:04, January 6, 2016 (UTC)

Template:Infobox quest & quest types[]

Hello Js. As you know I'm invested into the FO4 quests project and with the help of Xernoc and yours on the quest icons we have made some progress. I noticed you updated the template for the quests infobox lately, but I do not find the various options to be satisfactory. I am turning to you because you are more experienced with the templates and probably know the answers to my next questions.

For the non-faction quests the infobox options are : main, side, repeatable, miscellaneous. That's ok with me since it corresponds to the type of quests we have referenced. For the faction quests the options are : faction main, faction miscellaneous, faction radiant (=repeatable?). I find the two last ones to be confusing.

In my opinion it would be clearer to rename the faction faction miscellaneous into faction faction side. The goal is to dispell a confusion between this faction type of miscellaneous quest and the non-faction miscellaneous quests (e.g. Gun Run) that are called miscellaneous quests because they trigger the misc part of the Pip-Boy. Could we replace those lines in the template : Current template :

-->|inst misc  = Institute miscellaneous<!--
-->|minm misc = Minutemen miscellaneous<!--
-->|rr misc = Railroad miscellaneous<!--
-->|bos misc  = BoS miscellaneous<!--

Suggested template :

-->|inst side  = Institute side<!--
-->|minm side = Minutemen side<!--
-->|rr side = Railroad side<!--
-->|bos side  = BoS side<!--

The second point is the faction radiant quest which is not an explicit type. Could we not just rename it as faction repeatable side quest or something explicit? I am not sure this is allowed though because I fear the "radiant" name comes from some canon source the wiki people prefer to follow rather than to try to make the wiki accessible to external readers. --YoDsanklai (talk) 08:49, January 6, 2016 (UTC)

On an different note, the icon category is missing from the template. I always wondered what that line did and why it was there. Now I see it was lost when the infobox was translated to the new style. Not sure what it's used for or if we need/want it, but figured I'd let you know that the "icon" part of infoboxes literally does nothing. --Xernoc (talk) 04:11, January 7, 2016 (UTC)

Quests[]

Alright I'll cancel my last edits. The damage will be limited to the faction-independent side quests and 2-3 other quests. --YoDsanklai (talk, blogs) 04:10, January 7, 2016 (UTC)

Isn't there a way to make the achievement work with several categories (eg "Category:Fallout 4 quests" as well as "Category:Fallout 4 side quests")? I noticed the achievements are also broken on the New Vegas section of the wiki. --YoDsanklai (talk, blogs) 04:44, January 7, 2016 (UTC)
The FNV achievements are not exactly broken, but they are much harder to unlock since all the quests and locations are split into categories that are not recognized by the achievement counter.
Oh, and there's a slight chance someone gets the 1k quest achievement before you. Who? I couldn't say for sure... --YoDsanklai (talk, blogs) 19:20, January 7, 2016 (UTC)
Alright I might have been a bit cocky, I'm further than 30 edits from the 1000. I hope to be done with it before saturday. --YoDsanklai (talk, blogs) 19:33, January 7, 2016 (UTC)
I just dropped him a message.--YoDsanklai (talk, blogs) 19:41, January 7, 2016 (UTC)

(Aye aye, captain. Funny enough, those side quests and some faction side quests were the things that still needed the most work, so that's really all I have to edit. Of course, this means I should either hit my mark or complete the quests project within a few days. Whichever comes first. --Xernoc (talk) 20:24, January 7, 2016 (UTC)

I want to flag some pages that need their rewards noted. For example, Diamond City Blues. We'll need someone to run the quest and get better info on the rewards available with each quest option and not only note it in the infobox, but also the Quick walkthrough and possibly the Detailed walkthrough. My question is which flag is best? Should I put cleanup tags on everything, or just use infobox incomplete? Or another flag? I'd put descriptions with these, of course. --Xernoc (talk) 20:53, January 7, 2016 (UTC)

Platforms needed[]

I noticed you just moved a {{pn}} to the very front of the bug description in this edit. Now call me a nitpicker, but shouldn't that tag be placed at the very end of the bug description, as specified on the Bug Verification Project page?

Quincy Ruins Bug[]

Hey Jspoelstra, I am new to this wikia. I had posted a bug and its fixes as well as its possible cause in quincy ruins. I assume you deleted it cause you locked down the page and im alittle confused as to why, as i have made edits before just not as big? Again I am new so not sure if I missed something here, I saw others were having the same issue and there was no mention of it on the page so was just trying to help out, I thought I had the format down but maybe i didnt. Made an account just to ask you. Also didnt see any form of private messaging so this was the best i could do, not sure how this works. R0cky jr94 (talk) 18:41, January 8, 2016 (UTC)

Quest images[]

Ok, now I'm getting mixed messages. Are we using pip-boy images or not? Despite the thumbs-up icon being used for a lot of quests, that doesn't change the fact that it's still each of those quests' icons. What makes Here Kitty, Kitty different from The Silver Shroud? If the argument is that the icon isn't useful, well none of them are and it would be better to put a more useful image on everything. Or we can do icons, which standardizes the look of the page, and I would argue a standard look from page to page is useful in its own right. But doing half and half just seems very inconsistent and hard to explain, especially if you're explaining to some anon how they broke this blurry rule. --Xernoc (talk) 20:01, January 8, 2016 (UTC)

I don't want this to come across the wrong way, but when will and image policy be decided? It sounds like we'll get this done right now and no one will question it thereafter, and then it becomes the de-facto policy because from now on it will be "How things were done in the past." So if this is essentially the policy-making stage right here, then I think this needs a little more thought, or there needs to be an official discussion soon before all of the work is done. --Xernoc (talk) 22:08, January 8, 2016 (UTC)
Yeah, I'll go write something up. I'll just pose it as a discussion, but not a vote unless you think that's necessary right now. Actually, I'll just write it up and if you feel it should be formatted differently, feel free to rearrange it. --Xernoc (talk) 22:28, January 8, 2016 (UTC)

National Guard[]

Hey, I received a request for a new image on the National Guard page on the grounds that it "looks like shit". I'm just not sure if it needs replacement, or what I could even replace it with. The only thing that comes to mind is the emblem on the sign outside of the National Guard training yard (which can be seen in that photo), and the new image would look something like this. Btw, I made that photo, I just didn't want to upload to the wiki unnecessarily, so it's not stealing. Anyway, wanted a second opinion before I tried replacing it. --Xernoc (talk) 06:39, January 9, 2016 (UTC)

Hey, I was wondering if you or someone could take a look at Template:Stats creature FO4. Essentially, almost everything about it is wrong. DT isn't a game mechanic, DR isn't a percentage, missing energy and radiation resistance... the template was apparently made before the game was announced. Anyways, I was trying to help out with the Automated turret (Fallout 4) page, but finding stats in FO4Edit is hard enough when I know what I'm looking for, and I got lost trying to place stats in that template. If it's within your knowledge to fix, that'd be awesome. I don't know enough about the finer points of combat mechanics to know what all should be in there, but I can try. Or we could ask someone like Alfwyn who might be more familiar. Anyways, if you could take a look, that'd be great. Thanks! --Xernoc (talk) 09:08, January 10, 2016 (UTC)

Father & Son[]

Alright I've got the achievement. Thanks for letting me getting it :D --YoDsanklai (talk, blogs) 09:45, January 10, 2016 (UTC)

Sheperd[]

Variants[]

Hey I noticed that there are no pages for different Brotherhood of Steel variants or railroad variants. These groups both have different level soldiers and such and can respawn all around the commonwealth. Something like Brotherhood of Steel (variants) or Railroad agent character pages would be needed. --Opifex1 (talk) 21:31, January 10, 2016 (UTC)

Vraagje[]

:) Kennyannydenny (talk) 08:55, January 11, 2016 (UTC)
Dank u :) Kennyannydenny (talk) 19:22, January 11, 2016 (UTC)

Bars[]

There's something weird about the path "MediaWiki:Wikia.js/userRightsIcons.js". I couldn't tell you what. You'd have to ask Wikia. This is either a bug or a result of their script blocking policies or both. I've copied the contents of MediaWiki:Wikia.js/userRightsIcons.js to User:Mazn/Test and that loads fine with:

importArticles({
    type: 'script',
    articles: [
        'User:Mazn/Test'
    ]
});

You can change the MediaWiki:Wikia.js to the above if you like but it's cleaner to create a new MediaWiki page instead - MediaWiki:UserRightsIcons.js e.g. Mazn (talk) 23:53, January 10, 2016 (UTC)

Yeah. That's what I meant. Mazn (talk) 00:14, January 11, 2016 (UTC)
Looks fine now. Mazn (talk) 00:49, January 11, 2016 (UTC)
You don't see the changes yet because you have to manually
  1. enable test mode and
  2. clear the browser cache (it says hown on MediaWiki:Wikia.js itself)
If you do both, it works fine now. One last thing though: You should remove the trailing comma in MediaWiki:Wikia.js:
importArticles({
    type: 'script',
    articles: [
        'MediaWiki:UserRightsIcons.js', <---- this comma
    ]
});
That's a syntax error and some browsers are picky about that kind of thing. Mazn (talk) 00:57, January 11, 2016 (UTC)
My apologies if you already know this, but editing the files is not enough. You also have to submit them for review. That's a change Wikia made quite recently, so maybe you haven't run into it yet. Mazn (talk) 14:46, January 11, 2016 (UTC)

Vandal[]

Are you still awake? I can't get anyone's attention on chat to address a vandal. If you could look at the last few edits on Skull, the anon and Fleekalicious. The anon in particular has a history of vandalism. --Xernoc (talk) 01:34, January 11, 2016 (UTC)

Thanks. --Xernoc (talk) 01:38, January 11, 2016 (UTC)

Mentioned-only[]

But then it's the opposite of how we do it in the older games. The FO3 and FNV ones have their race and mentioned-only as category (example: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Paulson_(Fallout:_New_Vegas) ) - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 14:54, January 11, 2016 (UTC)

Wouldn't it be easiest to just make the FO4 ones the way all the other pages already are? - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 14:59, January 11, 2016 (UTC)
So basically, as there is no rule, we will now do it differently than was is usual. Doesn't seem logical at all, but ok. Do i revert all the ones I did then? - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 15:05, January 11, 2016 (UTC)
Nice idea. I feel stupid for not getting it myself :p -Peace'n Hugs (talk) 15:10, January 11, 2016 (UTC)
Alright, I'll see what I can do.- Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 15:26, January 11, 2016 (UTC)
I agree with you, but then we'll have people complaining that we aren't following that earlier project that got voted. I hate the project, but things are the way they are and i feel sortof obliged to follow it as general rule now. Would it be better to leave the pages for now and havea forum about it? - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 15:47, January 11, 2016 (UTC)
That was my original plan, but then we'll have the problem with post war people. Are they ghouls, synths or humans? Or should we add a category "humanoid" to cover those we don't know? - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 15:51, January 11, 2016 (UTC)

Notes[]

Hey! Could you guys help me with this part: "The way that nets most experience during the main quest seems to be (SPOILERS)" it's in the notes of The main Article Fallout 4 quests.

I've tryed to understand it but it didn'n work for me. I went through it step by step with graphics and it's not precise enough and it has also some errors. It would be good to make it step by step or by putting it in some graphics or diagram. Thank you! He2isenberg (talk) 20:57, January 11, 2016 (UTC)He2isenberg

My apologies! Seems I didn't test the latest version in Chrome. It should work now. Mazn (talk) 15:28, January 15, 2016 (UTC)
It still didn't work, did it? :) Well, seems it only worked for me due the browser's cache. But that's fixed now too. It's tested with Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Opera now. In the future: Do let me know if the whole thing or part of it does not work, please! That's something I need to act on. Mazn (talk) 17:15, January 15, 2016 (UTC)

( The code will now run when launched from a MediaWiki file. It's still a bit underdocumented so I might catch flak from Wikia for that, but so be it. I would suggest moving it from User:Mazn/Doc to MediaWiki:Doc.js and including it in MediaWiki:Common.js with:

/* ######################################################################## */
/* ### EDITHELP                                                         ### */
/* ### ---------------------------------------------------------------- ### */
/* ### Description: Displays documentation about templates within the ### */
/* ###              classic editor                                      ### */
/* ### Credit:      User:Mazn                                           ### */
/* ### Disclaimer:  See http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Doc.js  ### */
/* ######################################################################## */
if ( /[?&]action=edit/.test( window.location.search ) ) {
    $.getScript('/load.php?mode=articles&only=scripts&articles=MediaWiki:Doc.js');
}

Just to repeat that though: This is just a demo. The code is good enough to ask the community whether they

  • like it and/or
  • have critique and suggestions.

It's also good enough to show it to Wikia and find out if it passes muster. It's not good enough to be a permanent addition to this wiki just yet. That and it's also still very much a work in progress and I don't want it in the MediaWiki namespace where it's out of my reach. So I'd suggest leaving it up for a week - or as long as the discussion takes - and taking it down again. I'll start a forum thread as soon as it's up. Okay? Mazn (talk) 00:39, January 18, 2016 (UTC)

Thank you! One minor gripe though. Well, a big one actually. You didn't copypaste the brace in the last line:
/* ######################################################################## */
/* ### EDITHELP                                                         ### */
/* ### ---------------------------------------------------------------- ### */
/* ### Description: Displays documentation about templates within the ### */
/* ###              classic editor                                      ### */
/* ### Credit:      User:Mazn                                           ### */
/* ### Disclaimer:  See http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Doc.js  ### */
/* ######################################################################## */
if ( /[?&]action=edit/.test( window.location.search ) ) {
    $.getScript('/load.php?mode=articles&only=scripts&articles=MediaWiki:Doc.js');
}  <---- this brace

Unfortunately the entire MediaWiki:Common.js is broken without that brace. Sorry. Mazn (talk) 18:46, January 18, 2016 (UTC)

Milton Parking Garage[]

Just wanted to say thanks for cleaning up the Milton Parking Garage page. Its my first time creating a new page and from the looks of your edits, I didn't botch it too much...lol.
