Lighter in Blender[]

I'm going to try to be as complete as possible, and split things up. Because there are a lot of steps to get everything right.

Blender Overview[]

Most of what you're going to be using, is the stuff on the right side bar, and the menu bar right below the viewport(s) and above the animation timeline - at the bottom of the window.

First, on that lower menu bar, look for the first dropdown button on the left, with a circle icon. It should be immediately to the right of the larger drop-down, that says "Object Mode". That's the "Viewport Shading" menu. Click that button, and select "Texture" from the menu.

Second, there should be two sections on the panel on the right. Each section has a dropdown button in the upper left corner, which allows you to change what is shown in that section. In this case, you need to make sure the topmost one, is set to "Outliner" - which looks like a tree view, showing a hierarchy of all items in the scene. This is very helpful for selecting specific objects from the scene, which we'll use later.

The bottom, larger section of this panel, should be set to properties, which will be used for materials/textures.

First Steps[]

By default, when you open up Blender - there's a box sitting in the middle of the scene, conveniently selected for you already. It's a stupid box, so it must die. First make sure it's selected. If it is, it will have an orange border around it. If not, then right-click it. Finally, once it's selected, hit the delete key.

Next, import the exported collada mesh, and zoom in so that it fits in the viewport.

Since the stick of dynamite isn't necessary, go to the "Outliner" section, and expand it until you see the object named "nifid_77-matrix" (expanding it further, will reveal that it's a parent to the mesh named "Dynamite_0-lib"). To the right of the name, you'll see a few icons. The first looks like an eye, the second a pointer, and the third a camera. Clicking the eye will hide the dynamite mesh from the scene, and clicking the camera will hide it from rendering. So click both of those so we can better focus on the lighter.

Now, as you've probably noticed - all the meshes in the scene are untextured. We'll fix that a little later, as it's..well, frankly kinda obnoxious to do in Blender. So first, we're going to open the lighter up.

Opening the Lighter[]

The first step, is going back to that "Outliner" and clicking the little icon next to the object named "##Cap". This will select the object in the scene.

Next, go back down to that bottom menu bar (the one with the "Object Mode" drop down menu), and you should see a button with an icon, that has three multi-colored lines meeting at the center (red,blue and green). To the right of that button are your move, rotate and scale buttons, in that order.

So, since we need to rotate in order to open the lighter, click the rotate button, and you should see the "gizmo" change in the scene, to a spherical shape, with red, green, and blue axis.

Now, to open the lighter, you need to click and drag on the axis that best fits the direction the lighter opens. If you picked the right axis, and dragged in the right direction, you should see the lighter open. If you make a mistake, simply hit ctrl+z to undo, and try again.

Textures[]

As I mentioned above, textures are done kinda oddly in Blender. Actually adding a texture to a material (i.e. the right way) will not cause the mesh to show the texture, even if the Viewport Shading is set to "Texture" (see the Blender Overview section for a reminder, if you forgot where that is). It will however, show if Viewport Shading is set to "Rendered", but that performs so slowly, that it's nearly impossible to do anything in the scene while that mode is active. But, if you do it in the way so it shows up in the "Texture" Viewport Shading, it won't show up in the render.

Because this has already become a mini-novel, and going over all the Texture and Material options would at least take up double the space, I'll just cover the quick way, so it will show up in the scene.

So, start out by selecting the base lighter mesh - either by right-clicking on it in the scene, or selecting "__Lighter_0-lib" from the Outliner.

Next, click the "Face Select" button on the lower menu bar - it's to the right of the Move,rotate,scale buttons, and the icon looks like a cube with a single orange face. Then, hit the "A" key to select all (hitting A again will select none - it's a toggle).

Now, refer back to the "Blender Overview" section, regarding the drop-down buttons for the two sections of the right panel. On the larger one (should be currently set to Properties), change it to UV/Image_editor. You should see a light gray square with grid lines, and a bunch of triangles all laid out within it. This is the UV map - or basically where each face of the mesh, corresponds to a part of its texture.

Next, at the very bottom of the panel, click the button labeled "Image", and select "Open Image". When you select that, you'll be shown a file menu, that allows you to pick the texture. In this case, the texture you need is in /Data/textures/weapons/1handgrenadethrow/ and is named lighter.dds. Select that, and you should see the texture applied to the bottom part of the lighter.

Finally, simply hit "A" again to deselect.

Repeat this same process for the cap, and the lighter itself will be fully textured in "Texture" Viewport Shading.

Conclusion[]

Despite being the easiest way, and the way that allows you to see the textured model in the viewport (without being in Rendered mode), doing textures this way has a number of limitations. Most notably, this won't work for the flame itself. Also, as already mentioned, no textures added this way, will show up in renders. Last but not least, the viewport won't show normal (bump) maps, and won't show textures with transparency. For this you'll need to do the materials and textures method.

I think I've covered most, if not all of the specifically fallout related parts of this, so you should be able to find plenty of Blender tutorials on youtube and elsewhere, should you want to learn how to work with materials, textures, and rendering. Yeah I noticed that too, they were probably implementing that new feature. Welcome message[]

Why did you change the width from 26% to 20%? 26% fills up the space much better while the other option results in an awkward gap between the text columns and the VB image. Hmm. I think it looks unnatural as the first column is squeezed downward ("policies and guidelines" and "New User Network" are forced into two lines instead of one), while as I mentioned there is a significant amount of empty now. It doesn't look aesthetically pleasing to me at all, and I don't think I can support it in that case =( But if you think the columns were too wide, would centring the headers of each column help? --Skire (talk) 18:15, August 16, 2014 (UTC)

Christopher Jules[]

Hello Js,

I was referencing the Christopher Jules article and it came to my attention that there were no sources for the, "Christopher" part of his name.

The name was spelled, "Christoper" in the article but I got no hits for, "Chris" on any EPA-related sources I quickly checked and felt I should bring it to your attention.

I'm sure his name comes from somewhere but I'm afraid I couldn't find it. If it remains elusive, a rename may be in order.

Saw Broc was online, so I was having a discussion with him over the Kitsune article, as well as the dialogue file uploaded. From what I have read, everything from her name to her backstory were entirely fabricated by the mod developers, with help from a few writers long after Fallout 2 was ever created, meaning that the content we are now covering is mod content - not cut content.

There is some original content involved over cut content, but from what I am currently seeing, most of the information needs to be removed. Put up deletion tags for now, but would love the chance to see further discussion from your end in-case we are missing something. ^{Some Assembly Required!} 20:41, August 22, 2014 (UTC)

Widths[]

I was wondering what the guidlines are. I've seen changes to 200, to 210, to 220, etc. Sometimes even in between those, and it makes me confused about what width is the current standard. Old Ben[]

While I agree it's a "good" nickname, I was under the impression we didn't work with nicknames at all, for the same reason why "Lady Jane" is "Jane (Freeside) and not "Lady Jane". The trend we usually work with always seemed to be "Name the page after what their real name would be, not what they are referred to in game. I have no issue naming pages after what they are referred to in game (I actually prefer it) but I don't agree with the idea that "only good nicknames can stay". Working on a case-to-case basis doesn't really work in my opinion, since this is a community website and working to a case-by-case basically means "whoever holds more power would get to chose", which makes me very uncomfortable. I would be perfectly open to just naming people by their nicknames (or in game)/real (full) names but not including titles (for example Old Ben and Lady Jane would be named as they are in game, but Dr. Li would remain as "Madison Li" and Mr. House would stay as "House"). Short question[]

Hello, J. You seem to know a lot about the Fallout games, and about Fallout in general. Could you please tell me, if you have any idea why do robots in Fallout 2 say "You got it?" in the small chat-box to the down-left corner when you try to repair them? Re: Party.txt[]

That text file can be found in the game's resources, by extracting with F2undat or finding a party.txt from somewhere else like the Restoration Project. I couldn't pickpocket the mentioned items from her, I saw them and could click them, but they didn't switch inventory. The sound of losing karma however was heard everytime I clicked to pickpocket it. She also had 12 caps which could be stolen without any problem. Thank you very much for at least not instantly assuming I was a troll given to posting conjecture or "speculation" as Raoul so rudely put it in his reversion email. There was no need for him to make that assumption- it's not like I claimed the code message said OBAMA IS A COMMUNIST TRAITOR or something equally troll-ish. Why does Raoul imagine that I, or anyone else, would post such an innocuous message translation, obviously a rare gem of a find that no one before me had found, and then "speculate" that it said WAR NEVER CHANGES? Compounding his false and arrogant assumption of trollery, he emails me that I must provide "proof" of what the message says! What the hell! I **AM** a subject matter expert on Morse code! It's like telling me I must provide "proof" that "egg" means "an embryo in a shell." His reversion of my edit, and his rude assumption of trollery, do not represent an entity that wants to encourage user input (i.e., a wiki) very well.

I learned Morse Code in 1960 because at that time, CW (continuous wave, i.e. "pure" tones using Morse Code) was the primary mode of long-distance radio communication in the Navy aircraft I flew. SSB (Single Sideband, i.e. voice) was just coming into use, but it wasn't the primary mode.

During and after my Navy duty, I was an Advanced Class Amateur Radio Operator ("Ham Radio") and continued to use Morse Code for decades. Altogether, I have used it for approximately 55 years. I say all this to let you know that I do, in fact, know what I am talking about regarding Morse Code- it's a second language to me.

Again, thank you for not dismissing my find out of hand as Raoul did. Glad to know saner heads ultimately prevailed.

MediaWiki change needed[]

At any rate - got a pretty nice update on the above mentioned maps done. Features are as follows:

• Popups are working, and will grab the first part of the page text (between any quotes and the nav) and the infobox image, directly from the page. It handles redirects fine, and will update on open.
• Popups also contain a "See More" link, that will open up the full page in another tab/window
• Hovering over the marker will now show a Pip-boy style tooltip under the marker, with the name of the location
• Scrollable filter menu has been added, also done in Pip-boy style - hidden by default.
• A top bar has been added, similar to the collapsible tables at the bottom of a page, to both make it fit in a bit better, and give a toggle for the filter pane
• Both maps now feature a byline in the bottom right with the text "By Digital_Utopia for Nukapedia", with relevant links. Basically taking credit where it's due, and hopefully discouraging other sites from making use of them.

Still on the "to-do" list:

• Regions for New Vegas (Fallout 3's are temporarily removed)
• Maps in a popup for said Regions
• Other stuff (Basically anything and everything that would require server-side/url variables)

Cut FO2 perks[]

I see you reverted my changes RE: healing rate on the Endurance page. I should have finished the Healing rate page writeup before putting the reference in, but it definitely is a stat in NV. Leon today has falsely accused me of telling users to unfollow the moose on twitter.

I want to make it clear that I have never told anyone to unfollow anything on twitter.

I'm tired of the campaign of harassment that has been coming from him, directed at me, as far as I am concerned a blatant false accusation like this with no grounding in reality is the final straw.

I've demanded an apology for now, and if I get one I'll be satisfied with it. Any repeat and I feel administrative action will be required.

Just going to leave a copy of my reply to him on here, as well:

Here is what I am looking at:

1. You start an entire forum to complain about our Twitter, instead if coming to either of us directly.
2. Shortly after Chris leaves his last message, you unfollow me, Chris, and the official SNM Twitter.
3. Not even 10-30 minutes after you unfollow all 3, so does Nukapedia.
4. You were the last person to post anything on Twitter, and you are the one on there essentially 98% of the time.
5. As for the telling people to unfollow us, I said that that was not worth going into further discussions over, as all I have is that 11-13 other people also unfollowed us at the same time as you did, and nearly all of them were from Nukapedia (a few were just random people that are not connected to either Nukapedia or the Moose - but only a few). Since I have no real proof aside from the considerable circumstantial evidence, I will just drop that like I had already dropped it earlier.

Nukapedia Follows Chris. It has done for a very long time, I think since the account was open. So do I.

Nukapedia does not Follow either Moose account, and I don't follow Nukapedia on my personal account (although Nukapedia does follow me). I do not believe it has ever followed either moose account to the best of my recollection, as there would have been no need for me to follow it - I follow accounts on Nukapedia (as I did when I used my mostly personal account) in order to try to have a relevant news feed to pull the news digest from.

As I was supposedly the person doing the tweeting (as would have been my understanding at the time), there would have been no reason for me to follow it, as presumably I would know the content anyway.

I have also looked at the Skype Conversation when Leon created his account, and there is no mention of me following any account, just adding it to the tweetdeck.

Looking at the Activity feeds for both Moose accounts, I can see follows that appear to be from the account creation (The accounts following each other). They are for some reason undated in my feed, but on Leon's one I the earliest dated one is a mention of Leon's account (by Franky) about 720 days ago, with people like Nate and Jasper following prior to this message.

I can see on the official Moose account the oldest message being a message 58 days ago, and follows from before that, including Leon following that account.

I can find no retweets from Nukapedia of any moose post, I can however see us retweeting Chris's moose related posts.

I'm left with the overall conclusion that this is a molehill that has been turned into a mountain with accusations of Bad Faith coming from nowhere. As I have mentioned before, I use the Tweetdeck application to manage these feeds, and even getting to a list of followers, much less working out how to unfollow them, is a chore and a half - its designed to post in many feeds, respond and retweet, not so much for member management.

I do not know if Nukapedia or myself ever followed these feeds. I do not believe it to be the case, and I have been offered no proof to show that they have.

If Leon is willing to apologise for his accusations of bad faith, I'm willing to put this behind me, although I am remain increasingly concerned about the ongoing harassing nature of his communication towards me, and I am certain he is making similar accusations if not worse, in private.

1. Nukapedia just recently re-followed Chris, then, as he notified me last night that Nukapedia was no longer following him, and after checking it myself, confirmed this personally as well. Unless both of us are suddenly liars?

We were followed by Nukapedia's Twitter, Danny agreed to repost some stuff on Nukapedia's Tumblr, and we have always kept close tabs on Nukapedia's Youtube and Formspring. There is no question that Nukapedia used to follow us - and we have always followed Nukapedia.
3. That is correct - Nukapedia retweeted various Moose related sources from Chris' accounts - not sure if that has ever been done directly from my personal Twitter, though. Was never really a dispute point.
4. I will have Chris go in and discuss Twitter affiliations, then. But there is still way too much weirdness going on for me to apologize on anything. The addition of the second account was from discussion with Chris in PM, so I dont have a record of it. However, it would have followed a similar process, so again, I would have had no prompt to follow.

No evidence has been presented of any link ever being in place.

I agree: I have simply become jaded. It has gotten to the point, where a lot of weird stuff keeps happening to me and around Nukapedia in general, and it always seems to be Chad involved. Maybe that has made me more suspicious, and as I said to Chad personally, I am in no way saying that my accusations are fact, but that the circumstantial evidence definitely points to him in my eyes.

Anyways, almost none of this really matters. The main body of my message to him was to see if there was an explanation involved. Since there has not been one, I am simply asking to have our Twitter affiliation restored, or for a community forum to begin in which we could discuss the matter properly. Right now, he has agreed to talk about the Twitter affiliation through my use of a Moose representative, which I will be doing shortly. That is what matters, as the rest I could not care about since it mostly involves personal accounts which means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

So I consider this case closed for now. If it is discovered that someone else did it, or some other weird variable is behind this, then I am fully willing to apologize for my accusations. I guess for now, we will just have to see what happens with the affiliation re-evaluation Gunny is starting with the bureaucrats. Just keep in mind, that all Chris was wanting to do was host a bit of fun for everyone. Tragic[]

Over the past months, I have created a trading card game in direct relation to the spoof TcG known as Tragic the Garnering from Fallout 2. Now that I have finished, and am working on the expansion set, I have decided to set up the first official (and entirely free) tournament, just as a bit of fun since nothing like the Apprentice is currently going on. The problem with categorising things as fair use is that it doesnt actually answer the question as to if we can actually have them here.

Leon doesn't seem to be asserting any Fair Use reason for using them. If he was, that would make the decision what to do much easier.

The US copyright office give the following examples of fair use:

• Quotation of excerpts in a review or criticism for purposes of illustration or comment.
• Quotation of short passages in a scholarly or technical work, for illustration or clarification of the author’s observations
• Use in a parody of some of the content of the work parodied
• Summary of an address or article, with brief quotations, in a news report
• Reproduction by a library of a portion of a work to replace part of a damaged copy
• Reproduction by a teacher or student of a small part of a work to illustrate a lesson
• Reproduction of a work in legislative or judicial proceedings or reports
• Incidental and fortuitous reproduction, in a newsreel or broadcast, of a work located in the scene of an event being reported.

I don't really see where this use fits in any of these. Although the cards can be seen as a parody of sorts, the parody is of Magic:The Gathering, rather than of the content of the images he's using - that would cover the card backing rather than the images itself.

Yes, the number of images is a lot of work, but he should be ascertaining the copyright status before using them.

When Jasper looked at a handful of them, he could only find copyrighted origins for some of them, nothing to suggest they may have come from a Public Domain source, as was previously asserted.

I dont want to disrupt the game, and given Leon and my history I did have a plan to pretty much ignore this game he's running, but with Jasper showing copyright infringement... I can't ignore that.

No use in talking about it anymore. Jasper already removed most of everything (even the screenshot images) yesterday. Wikia still has no problems with me hosting my images on CC, even after all of this, so I will simply keep the game text-based here as I check through my images before expanding the tournament and starting it back up sometime next month. ^{Some Assembly Required!} 20:45, November 22, 2014 (UTC)

Like I told SA: he does not represent Wikia Staff. I am also dismissing your transparent allegations, as there is no way in hell that you guys were able to scan the entire Internet in 1-3 minutes for each image, like you two have been repeatably claiming. I have found quite a few illegitimate images, also, but they took me a lot longer than you two were claiming to discover them, and I am currently seeking out permissions from said images.

Leon, it takes about 1 minute to do a reverse image search in google. I've done it many times. I don't see any releveance to the question as to what status Shining Armour is. The SA response was in-due to his threat on the TtG forum, in which he was claiming he would remove any images I uploaded onto CC, even though I have permission from Wikia Staff - I made that response, because it appears as if Jas is challenging my right to move the images onto CC (nothing else I said has any relevance to what he said).

As for Google, I am really not going to get into how Google does not cover the entire Internet, nor am I going to get into the question as to why you would even suggest that they do. So that is that. But I will ask as to the blatant misinformation, in which two images Jas pointed out, could not be connected to a copyright-holding artist, yet he still insists that every image he has discovered has been. So since no one has shared with me these other alleged illegitimate images found, I cannot:

A: Get to work on contacting the copyright-holding artists in a timely manner.

B: Really take his exaggerations seriously.

In any case, I trust that this matter is over with, in regards to removals. However, if Jas and others actually do something productive instead of being antagonistic, and actually share with me the additional information that they have allegedly found, then I would actually appreciate that so that I can amend my errors quickly, instead of having to spend hours trying to back-trace a few images at a time. ^{Some Assembly Required!} 07:19, November 23, 2014 (UTC)

I've informed CC of my concerns. What they choose to do is a matter for them. As for expecting leon to locate all these images, Given the circumstances as far as I'm concerned the burden of proof is on leon to prove his PD assertion, and no-one else, if he can't find a PD source through google, or otherwise search his internet history to find the site, then he should presume all the images are subject to copyright and bring him self in compliance with the legal requirements. Listen, whether I am being trolled by some of your mods is obvious but not my point at the moment.

I tried to add a request for bug clarification about Veronica... but every time I tried it got pulled down. Whatever, my contributions are unwelcome, I get it.

Mapping and icons[]

I was wanting to add an unmarked location marker for Rawr's cave in the divide but I'd need to make a new Pin category. Do we have the markers used in the FNV maps stored on the wiki anywhere? I need some help with videos[]

OK, let me say first off that I know I'm looking for help in the wrong place, but I've looked everywhere else and I couldn't find what I was looking for. I also didn't want to contact Wikia, because then they'd know that an admin didn't know the codes that they should. I'd contact the other admin there (who knows a helluva lot more about his stuff than I do), but she visits once a month, tops. I'm a recent admin at the F.E.A.R. Wiki, and I've been having problems with the videos there. Whenever I place them in a walkthrough template, they "double" in the template, one at the top, and a copy of it just below that one. I've looked in the Wiki's Community Help, but there was nothing there of the sort to help me. I figured that since wikis all basically use the same coding, maybe you'd be able to tell me what to do. Now my only remaining problem is that the remaining 60+ pages with walkthrough templates look the same: they've all got the "file" in place (like what you changed the four pages' videos to), but there's only red text in place of the video (I hadn't messed with the videos on those pages yet). German wiki infobox[]

I took a look at that, and as far as I can tell, the template works fine with a valid image. I don't have any idea how it was, since the parameter called is "bild", and that parameter is not define at all in the base infobox template, but it does work somehow. The software must somehow translate the German "bild" parameter in the English "image" and pass it. I seriously have no idea how it's doing that. I didn't really look at the other parameters. I thought you only asked about the image. It seems the image they used on the doc page doesn't exist. Ok. That there is a mess. The template calls parameters from the old style datarow infobox template, but is called through the new style infobox template. I have no idea how any of that is even parsing. It either needs to be called through the Template:Infobox/backup, or completely rewritten. Pick one.
