You have learned the value of careful packing. Items with a weight of 2 or less weigh half as much for you.— In-game description

Pack Rat is a perk in Fallout: New Vegas.

Effects[]

Taking this perk causes a 50% reduction of the Carry Weight of any item that typically weighs 2 pounds or less.

Interactions that require the Pack Rat perk[]

Notes[]

  • All affected items in the game world will display their new lowered weight whether or not they are in one's inventory.
  • In Hardcore mode, ammunition is affected by the perk as well. It makes taking the perk especially useful for characters in Hardcore that want to use high-damage weapons that need high ammo reserves but prefer to carry more food and drink items to avoid starvation and dehydration.
  • The perk does not change the carrying capacity of companions; they will still carry affected items at their full weight.
  • The 2-pound threshold applies before stacking, not after, i.e. although a 30-count stack of 1-pound Sunset Sarsaparillas weighs 30 pounds, the perk still applies.
  • Synergizes well with the perks Strong Back, Old World Blues (add-on) Hoarder, and Lonesome Road (add-on) Burden to Bear.
  • The perk description's general wording belies the fact that it affects weapons, aid and misc. items all the same, thus making it highly useful for characters who prefer to use throwing weapons or mines, as most types of these items weigh 1 pound or less.

Bugs[]

[Platforms needed]There appears to be a bug related to Pack Rat in that due to the discrepancy between a follower's weight and the player character's weight, the player character is capable of adding an unlimited amount of ammunition into their companion's inventory despite the fact that it will exceed the companion's max weight i.e. 30,000 rounds of 5mm ammunition can be added if the companion starts out with room to carry an extra round, then one deposits the rounds in small amounts at a time.[verification overdue]
