The police pistol is a weapon in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Dead Money.

Characteristics[]

Police pistol blown up

Police pistol expanded

A double-action .357 revolver with a swing-out cylinder similar to that of a .44 Magnum instead of a loading gate like the standard .357 Magnum. Though it is a double-action, it is fired in a single-action form with the hammer being cocked back after each shot to increase accuracy.[Non-game 1] It features a short barrel and a worn matte black finish, lacks rear sights, and has a shorter hammer with a flat, textured spur compared to the smooth, rounded spur of the .357 Magnum revolver.

Compared to the .357 Magnum, the police pistol has higher damage, a higher critical chance multiplier, a faster fire rate and so a higher damage-per-second (DPS) value and due to its swing-out cylinder, it can be reloaded quickly. It is considered a holdout weapon.

Durability[]

The police pistol can fire a total of about 1,120 standard rounds, the equivalent of 187 reloads, from full condition before breaking.

Locations[]

Notes[]

  • Like many other Dead Money weapons, the police pistol cannot be obtained outside the Sierra Madre.
  • The police pistol is not affected by the Cowboy and The Professional perks.
  • Due to this weapon using the same model of cylinder and cartridges as the .44 Magnum revolver, the rounds loaded into the police pistol cylinder are identical to .44 Magnum rounds despite it being chambered for .357 Magnum rounds.
  • In the weapon's reload animation, there are still live rounds present in the speedloader after reloading the gun's cylinder.
  • After equipping and drawing the police pistol, the first shot will always be fired in double-action.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Joshua Sawyer stated that the weapon is "loosely based" on the Colt Police Positive/Colt Official Police used in the Treasure of the Sierra Madre film.[Non-game 2][Non-game 3][Non-game 4]
  • In the police pistol's texture, there is an unused facet of the texture that appears to be a silencer. No part of the UV map is placed on this part texture, nor is there any model for a silenced version of the police pistol. This likely means that mods of some kind were planned for the police pistol but were cut for time or resource reasons.

Bugs[]

  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 When entering V.A.T.S. with the revolver, it may be invisible during V.A.T.S. but will return to normal once V.A.T.S. is exited. [verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes in V.A.T.S., if firing multiple shots into the same limb or target, the player character will fire all the shots in exactly the same place, even if the target has moved after the first shot. [verified]
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 The police pistol lacks vertical aim in V.A.T.S. so you will be aiming as if nothing was wrong then move to the default forward-facing position when firing. [verified]
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Furthermore, if using a third-person view, regardless of using V.A.T.S. or not, the police pistol has no vertical aim. To fix this, just change to the first-person view. [verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 If loading a saved game from the main menu in which you have police pistol equipped and drawn, the reload animation takes twice as long as normal. This can be solved by simply switching to another gun and then back again. [verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 When equipping the pistol or hotkey equip, instead of the pistol click sound it has a rifle shunt sound. [verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 When firing it you may not pull back the hammer making it shoot two bullets at a time. [verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 When firing the gun in V.A.T.S., it may keep you in iron sights after leaving V.A.T.S. [verified]
  • PCPC Sometimes it can be bought from Vendortron or Lacey at the Mojave Outpost at very early levels (1-6) before completing the Dead Money add-on.[verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 After equipping the Police pistol, the hammer will not move for the first shot.[verification overdue]

  2. Question: "Since I have a feeling you were involved, I love that Police Pistol from Dead Money, it's sound, it's kick when it fires, and it's texture. So much beauty. Can you tell me the IRL model for it?"
Joshua Sawyer: "It was loosely based on the Colt Police Positive."

  3. Question: "The Police pistol was based on the Colt Police Positive, I presume. Is there any particular reason why it operates in single-action?"
Joshua Sawyer: "I thought it fit the weapon better, especially given its accuracy despite having a short barrel."

  4. Question: "Hello Josh, I am currently replaying Fallout New Vegas and I am enjoying it very much. I decide to start my new game straight with the Dead Money DLC. I noticed that the first two firearms you get in the villa are the Police Pistol and the Automatic rifle. By the look of the weapons they seem to be based on the the same guns that Bonnie and Clyde used. Was this an intentional reference."
Joshua Sawyer: "I’m glad you’re enjoying your replay, but no, those weren’t the inspirations. Treasure of the Sierra Madre was one of the reference films Avellone used, so I took the Colt Official Police and turned it into the Police Pistol."
