Forums: Index > Wiki proposal votes > Vote: Making user rights requests sane

Following up on the discussion about changing the user rights to something a little less prohibitive (we went from 500 edits to make admin to 500 edits to make patroller, with admins requiring 10x as much edits, despite wiki editing not changing fundamentally), I'd like to propose a formal vote to amend the requirements. The goal of the vote is to open up these positions to talented users who work on the wiki, yet due to being new arrivals (after the TV series), are excluded from access the janitorial closet.

Secondly, the goal is to return to the roots. Over the years, the rights system spiraled out of our control and turned into a strict hierarchy, with admin rights seen not as the ability to grab a toolbox and fix what breaks, but as encouragement to lord over others. I am guilty of doing that sixteen years ago (and now I have to go sit down after realizing how old I got), and may have contributed to the problem.

As such, I'm proposing to replace the current user rights requests requirements with the following text. I believe it accomplishes the following goals:

  • Makes the requirements actually possible to fulfill by regular users.
  • Removes the endorsement requirement, which entrenches the existing rights holders.
  • Shifts focus from farming edits to merit, encouraging considerate requests.
  • Makes rights janitorial, rather than hierarchical.

This is a community project. Let's make it one once again. Tagaziel 15:42, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Proposed text[]

Rights are not badges or positions of power.

Users may request additional rights to assist in maintaining the wiki and help with moderation. The following role may be requested and granted by any administrator, without having to go through a forum vote.

  • Patroller: 100 edits and 1 month of consistent activity.

The following roles require a forum vote by the community after meeting the requirements. These reflect the focus of the role, allowing users to apply for extra rights in specific fields of wiki activity, with administrator rights intended for those who feel comfortable across the board.

  • Chat moderator: 3 months of consistent activity on Discord.
  • Discussions moderator: 500/1000 Discussions posts and 3 months of continuous activity.
  • Content moderator: 500/1000 edits and 3 months of continuous activity.
  • Technical moderator: 500/1000 edits and 3 months of continuous activity.
  • Administrator: 500/1000 edits and 3 months of continuous activity.

The Bureaucrat role is a special role exempt from voting, granted by the current Bureaucrat on an as-needed basis, to ensure there is always someone with the ability to grant additional rights.

Each request must be accompanied by a rationale outlining why the user requires these extra rights (for example, to edit protected templates to improve them) and a brief summary of their activities on the wiki up to that point.

Note: The proposed text was amended to clarify that Bureaucrats are appointed on an as-needed basis by the current bureaucrat to ensure access to rights management, rather than an apparent top of the "power ladder".

  1. Yes For me, this is going back to a much more dynamic wiki. Ah, to be young again. ;) Tagaziel 15:42, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
  2. Yes As someone who first got their user rights under the fortress system (and helped keep it in place at the time, which I regret), I've seen how hard it has been for other people to meet the requirements, and the decrease in new, talented people being given the tools they need as a result. It's time to roll back the years and open up the janitorial closet for everyone again. The Appalachian Mandalorian insignia 19:05, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

  4. Yes I feel like this is actually more opening and I never tried to request any addtional rights but I've watched how rarely the votes for the rights are... This is going to be more interesting as I get to see who with what they can accomplish with the larger openings and more availability. 10. Yes Seems reasonable, and lowers the strict bar for users trying to make their mark in this community! I wouldn't mind having Patroller either, since I have garnered a little over 100 edits now :3 AnalogBreakdown (talk) 16:35, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

  21. Yes Even 500 edits is not so easy to get to, as long as they are quality edits! I mean, I've been editing off & on little by little since 2017 and only recently hit 500. Although, I do think admin requirements should be more than mods. I also think rollback the requirement for users being logged in to edit (that happened during the "turbulent" time a couple years ago). - AngelaStuff2 (talk) 23:05, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Forgot to add a comments section. I'm happy to see the vote progress as it does, however. :) Tagaziel 20:24, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

Admin comes with slightly more tools and should have more experience than mods, in my opinion. My vote is 500 for mods, 1000 for admins. I also think rollback the requirement for users being logged in to edit (that happened during the "turbulent" time a couple years ago, and should be revisited now that the turbulence has cleared). I literally never would have made an account or made a single edit at all if having an account had been a requirement when I made my first edits. You can see on my "about" page, I have listed the 7 different anon accounts I edited under for over 3 years before I ever made an account. Yes, maybe I fall into the "hardly contribute" category, but I do feel like the contributions I have made have been meaningful contributions. Remove the barrier for new editors! Finally, I strongly feel the only road to Bureaucrat shouldn't be 'granted by the current Bureaucrat'. What if something horrible ever happens to J and he's our only current B ?? - AngelaStuff2 (talk) 23:05, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

The 500 option passes. Since it's a major change, we'll have to see how it goes. Should be an evaluation in a year's time. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 14:41, 23 May 2024 (UTC)
