The Abilene Kid LE BB gun is a unique weapon in Fallout: New Vegas.

Characteristics[]

Abilene kid LE bb gun

Abilene kid LE BB gun expanded

Compared to the standard BB gun, the Abilene Kid LE BB gun has a slightly higher critical chance and a significantly higher critical hit damage multiplier, achieving around 70 points of added damage per critical hit. If enhanced with the Better Criticals perk, a critical hit from the Abilene Kid LE BB gun is roughly on par with the sniper rifle, doing 109 damage total compared to the sniper rifle's 113; taking the Just Lucky I'm Alive perk (requires installing all add-ons including Lonesome Road) increases the bonus damage to a total of 125%, making the Abilene Kid LE BB gun deal 157 points of damage per critical hit.

Due to its relatively low base critical chance multiplier, however, the Abilene Kid LE BB gun is not reliably effective in normal combat without additional critical chance modifiers, such as from taking the Finesse perk or using a True Police Stories skill magazine. It can be considered more useful for stealth-based player characters who can rely on regularly achieving Sneak Attack Criticals as the weapon is considered a silent weapon like its standard variant. Just like the standard, it also has a comparatively (to other rifles) high spread, which makes the weapon somewhat impractical to use for anything beyond mid-range attacks.

Visually, the weapon's texture includes the inscription "Abilene Kid ~Limited Edition~ 1 of 200." on both sides of the weapon's stock.

Durability[]

The Abilene Kid LE BB gun can fire a total of about 495 BBs, the equivalent of 5 reloads, from full condition before breaking.

Locations[]

  • The weapon is located in Fields' shack, southwest of Nellis Air Force Base; The shack is right next to the main road leading into the base. The weapon is found sitting on one of the shelves on the left wall.
  • If Wild Wasteland is an active trait, the weapon will instead be located inside a well that appears in front of the shack. The well appears after talking to Rex upon him saying "aroo" and asking him if someone fell down a well. Doing this will activate a map marker for the location of Jimmy's well.

Notes[]

  • If one obtains the weapon from Fields' shack, it is possible to receive another gun at Jimmy's well by using the Auto-Doc in the Sink in the Old World Blues add-on to gain Wild Wasteland as a trait and then talking to Rex to get the well's location.
  • The instance of the weapon obtained from Fields' shack will be at 90% health, whereas the instance found in Jimmy's well will appear at 100% health.
  • Unlike the standard BB gun, the Abilene Kid LE BB gun can cause decapitations and explosions of limbs.
  • With a relatively high critical chance (~25%, which can be achieved with a 10 Luck attribute level, taking the Finesse and Better Criticalsperks, and wearing the elite riot gear and 1st Recon beret), the Abilene Kid LE BB gun can out-do both the Bozar's and the GRA anti-material rifle's DPS values against targets with a DT of around 25.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The "Abilene Kid" was the nickname of the youngest lead role in the 1948 movie 3 Godfathers, William Kearney, played by Harry Carey Jr.
  • The Abilene Kid LE BB gun was conceived by Joshua Sawyer, intended as a throwback to the Red Ryder LE BB gun.[1]
    • The weapon's inspiration, combined with the Wild Wasteland encounter of finding the weapon inside a well after listening to the canine Rex about a boy named Jimmy falling in the well, is a reference to a trope related to the television series Lassie, where another character has to decipher the dog Lassie's barking to learn that her owner Timmy fell down a well. The series never actually featured an incident with Timmy falling down a well, however, though Lassie did regularly have to get help for the accident-prone boy.

Bugs[]

  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes, the gun will drop through the floor of the shack, or just simply isn't there, rendering it unobtainable in some cases.[verified]
    • On PC, the issue can sometimes be resolved by using the console command tcl and moving beneath the floor.
  • PCPC Xbox 360Xbox 360 The player character's finger blocks the iron sights if the player character is male, but not if the player character is female.[verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sneak attacks with the Abilene Kid LE BB gun will not inflict critical damage unless that attack is a headshot. This tends to happen more often if the target has more DT than the base damage of the weapon.[verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Perform a sneak attack critical on any companion (preferably their head) and knock them unconscious (Hardcore mode must be off). As soon as they get back up, do this again and the physics glitch activates, thus hurtling the companion up into the sky and practically out of visual range. They will land nearby. When this was tested on ED-E, however, after its landing and recovery, its antennae were "broken," hovering over it in different positions. It may be necessary to reload a save in order to fix its appearance, alternatively, you can restart the game to fix its appearance.[verified]

Joshua Sawyer: "I did, though it was really just a throwback to the Red Ryder LE. The Abilene Kid isn't particularly accurate, but if you have a critical hit-oriented build, it can be really powerful from a hidden state."
