For the broken moon within The Cage, see Moon (The Cage).

The moon is an object orbiting Earth mentioned throughout the NieR series.

Areas[]

Characteristics[]

The moon is visibly damaged and has a massive crater burrowed into its surface. Residual debris and the crater itself are large enough to be easily seen from Earth. The perpetual daytime and "midnight sun" effect experienced in the Kingdom of Day is the result of a shift in Earth's axis that was caused by the moon's damage.[1][2][3]

The moon houses a lunar base founded by the Army of Humanity. It serves as a storage facility for information on human civilization and culture,[4] as well as genetic data of various Gestalts and structural data from Replicants.[5][6] Further, the lunar base contains the Council of Humanity server installed as part of Project YoRHa. The server periodically broadcasts transmissions to Earth and the Bunker to pose as a physical human Council.[5][7][8]

The lunar base’s interior is stark white with heat-resistant surfaces. The multi-level structure and its servers are maintained by unit 10H and hundreds of units of Pod 006.[7] Much like the Bunker, supplies are occasionally sent to the moon from Earth.[7][9] However, shipping records indicate that most containers are empty, presumably to act as decoys and suggest the presence of humans. In reality, only repair materials and purified water are sent to the lunar base.[10][note 1]

Background[]

In the 27th century, an unknown event caused the moon to fracture, resulting in a shift of the Earth's axis.[3] This axis distortion caused a change in the Earth's normal day-night cycle, producing continual daytime in the area that would become called the Kingdom of Day.[2][1]

In the 52nd century, a lunar base was established on the moon by the Army of Humanity in response to the onslaught of the Machines. The base was used as a storage facility to archive and protect information on humanity and the Old World.[4] After the extinction of the Gestalts in 4198,[12] structural information of remaining Replicants and genes of various Gestalts was recorded by androids. This data was sent to the moon and stored in the lunar base to be archived.[6][5]

Following rumors of humanity's extinction, a communications server was secretly installed on the moon as the first stage of Project YoRHa. The server was designed to send regular transmissions to Earth under the guise of the Council of Humanity as a means of boosting android morale.[5][7][8]

Few YoRHa members were made aware of the lunar server's existence; those informed were tasked to operate and protect the server.[5] Others were told that, after the alien invasion in 5012, a handful of humans retreated from Earth and sheltered on the moon.[13]

Trivia[]

  • In NieR:Automata, the moon is only visible from atop the Tower during the last gameplay sequences of Routes C/D.
  • After the release of NieR, the moon's role in the shifting of Earth's axis was unknown, though the axis shift was noted as being the cause of permanent daytime.[2] The moon was later mentioned and linked to the axis shift in NieR:Automata.[1]
    • As part of the NieR 10th Anniversary livestream, a rough date of the event was mentioned and added to a timeline spreadsheet by director Yoko Taro during a review of the timeline.[3] Note that this date does not appear in the timeline presented in Grimoire NieR: Revised Edition released the following year.
