Dark Memory character appearances
Dark Memories are a type of EX Character story in NieR Reincarnation. They are achieved through evolving unique weapons and ultimately allow the obtaining of special characters.[1]
Characteristics[]
Each summon character has a corresponding Dark Memory weapon and set of stories. The first story of each Dark Memory is unlocked and automatically played when the unique weapon is first obtained. Dark Memory weapons are found as rewards for completing certain story quests on Hard or Very Hard difficulty.[Note 1]
Evolving Dark Memory weapons restores them to their "true state,"[2] a process that can be seen as the item gradually returns to a white appearance. It also unlocks Dark Memory stories as the weapon evolves, which notably separate from the weapon's own weapon stories.
Each Dark Memory weapon starts as a 3-star weapon, but can be evolved by using the relevant affinity jewels along with components specific to evolving Dark Memories.[Note 2] Each of the Dark Memory-specific components can be obtained from Dark Memory Quests, though only certain components can be alternatively obtained from Dark Memory Chapter Summons and/or various Exchanges.

- Costumes and weapons from Dark Memories are visual counterparts of those from Recollections of Dusk. Elements of the color palettes are swapped, such as clothing changing from black to white and vice versa.
