NRv122 Angelic Mural Seal

Angelic used in the Song of the Ancients mural.

Angelic is an ancient language used throughout the world of NieR.[1] Angelic characters are typically used to represent magic, a sentiment indicating a link to the world of Drakengard.[2]

Angelic can be translated into characters from the Latin alphabet, typically forming either English or rōmaji phrases. Certain generic sequences may also appear, such as "A, C, G, T", which represent genetic patterns.[2][Note 1]

Usage[]

NieR Replicant[]

In NieR, Angelic text is most commonly seen when using Sealed Verses. It can also be seen surrounding certain bosses and during the casting of magic by individuals such as Kainé, Emil, and magic-wielding Shades. Angelic is also used for user interface elements, such as dialogue boxes, boss health dials, and within the pause menu.

A B C D E/H F/Z G I/J/Y K L M N O P Q R S/X S T T U/V/W W

The Angelic font used in NieR consists of thin lines that connect with hollow circles. It is occasionally used in later entries, such as in the title sequence of NieR:Automata or in the SINoAlice collaboration trailer for NieR Reincarnation.

NieR:Automata[]

In NieR:Automata, most boss titles appear in Angelic during Route A, and are later translated during Route B. Golden Angelic characters appear when executing certain Pod Programs and while 9S is in the process of hacking. Each of the Resource Recovery Units is labeled with Angelic text.

Note: Representations of P and Q do not appear within the in-game font of NieR:Automata.

The Angelic font used in NieR:Automata is notably different from that of NieR. Characters consist of thicker lines that are disconnected from filled-in circles (as opposed to being hollow) and avoid intersection with each other. While most of the characters are shared, subtle design and usage changes exist. Some changes include:

  • The character for "F/Z" has an additional circle (F vs F).
  • The character for "M" has a different rightmost circle position (M vs M).
  • The character for "O" is straight instead of bent (O vs O).
  • The character for "R" has an additional circle (R vs R).
  • The primary character for "S" is based on the lesser-used secondary variant from NieR and is shorter (S vs S (Alt)).
  • The primary character for "T" is based on the lesser-used secondary variant from NieR (T vs T (Alt)).
  • The character for "X" is shorter (X vs X) and is no longer shared with "S".

NieR Reincarnation[]

In NieR Reincarnation, Angelic is seen when entering a battle and when performing special attacks. It is also seen when performing summons and during certain story sections, most notably The Sun and the Moon.

Note: In NieR Reincarnation, representations of E typically use the character for Q, and instances of W typically use the character for X.

The Angelic font used in NieR Reincarnation is largely shared with that of NieR:Automata. Some changes include:

  • The character for "E" is no longer shared with "H", and is instead shared with "Q" (E vs E).
  • The character for "W" is no longer shared with "U/V", and is instead shared with "X" (W vs W).

Trivia[]

  • Angelic is based on the Celestial Alphabet, a real-world script created in the 16th century. The font from NieR/NieR Replicant most closely resembles the original 16th-century stylization.
  • In NieR Reincarnation, characters from the Malachim alphabet (a similar real-world script) are seen on certain in-game books and materials. They are often found alongside other Celestial-based Angelic characters.[Note 7]

  1. Specifically, the DNA nucleobases of [A]denine, [C]ytosine, [G]uanine, and [T]hymine.
  2. Does not appear in-game; used very rarely in other NieR/NieR Replicant media. Similar character was later used in NieR:Automata as the primary version of "S" (S)
  3. Later confirmed in NieR:Automata. Appears on structure and translated in Pod 153 dialogue, "It reads 'Meat Box'" ME AT   BOX (NieR:Automata)
  4. Does not appear in-game. Appears rarely in external media and merchandise.
Possible reference to Unicode "White Vertical Rectangle" (U+25AF) used for missing or uninstalled characters.
  5. Later confirmed in NieR:Automata. Similar character appears in boss health bar, "Marx" MARX (NieR:Automata)
  6. 6.0 6.1 Does not appear in-game in Nier:Automata. Although it could be assumed that the character would inherit a similar appearance as in NieR Replicant, this was only later confirmed when it was portrayed in NieR Reincarnation.
  7. A third script, the Transitus Fluvii alphabet, shares certain characters with the Celestial alphabet. The script from which the Malachim-partnered, shared characters originated is therefore ambiguous, though other Transitus-exclusive characters are not seen in such instances.
