The weapon fires 40mm grenades. Standard ammunition is 40mm frag grenades.
(Other grenade types may in theory be used by modifying the receiver. However, these receivers are present in the game data but cannot be added legitimately in-game by the player.)
Weapon modifications
Unlike the pipe grenade launcher, this weapon cannot be fitted with pistol stocks and cannot have a suppressor fitted.

Locations
A legendary Penetrating variant can be obtained from Suggs as a reward after retrieving the schematics from Marvin in the Creation Club quest When Pigs Fly.
Alternatively, Flakker, a variant with the Kneecapper legendary effect, can be obtained by killing Suggs at the conclusion of the quest.
After completion of the quest, normal variants will sometimes be sold by vendors or appear as loot.
