Following discussion on the topic over the last week, I am moving forward with a vote on amending the Image policy to give a definitive stance on recreated assets. This vote will be in two parts, the first on if recreated assets should be allowed on the wiki, and the second on what this will look like in policy. The second vote on what this policy will look like will be held pending the outcome of this vote on if recreated assets should be allowed. Aiden4017 (talk) 04:04, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

Comments[]

PSA about the policy options, since everyone doesn't like what I've written. The split vote happened for a number of reasons, one of them being I hadn't finished writing the policy but wanted to hold a vote on the subject before the momentum to change the policy was lost. Because of this, the current page has versions I rushed to type up because you all demanded it, and they are terrible because of it.

They are still drafts and are incomplete versions of the policy. Because funnily enough I wanted to spend the week this vote ran for to finish them, and since it was demanded to know what the eventual policy would be for this vote I rushed them out. Fact is, it's the middle of the university term and I didn't want to waste time writing policy that would be useless if the vote was no on the use of recreated assets. Can you add the full text on what we're voting for?

I'd just like to note that it'd be great to have a long-standing, time-honored practice finally codified. :) Тагазиэль 06:06, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

I will be holding out on voting until the verbiage is laid out. I would also like some kind of a guide. But the verbiage would be nice at the least to assure proper policy. I am for the idea btw. Jon the Don -JBour53 (Talk to my consigliere) 07:08, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

I initially wanted to hold a combined vote, but thought it best to split the votes, so that it would be less confusing. I also thought that in the event the majority opinion was against using recreated assets, people wouldn't feel like they had wasted their votes on a policy option that wouldn't be implemented. I'll type up the policy and add it to the page, but the vote on which one to implement will still be separated. Aiden4017 (talk) 08:07, 25 May 2022 (UTC)

This proposal is not about Fanon. Fanon would be original work in the Fallout universe. This is about restoration to show the artists actual deaign. Agent c (talk) 10:44, 26 May 2022 (UTC)

And fan recreated assets are fanart, which can go on the Fanon wiki, not ours, we use what is seen and found In-Game Mug | Talk 06:06, 27 May 2022 (UTC)

Policy options[]

The following are the proposed policies that will be voted on following this vote. The vote on which of these options will be implemented is going to be held at a later date, so do not vote for anything in this section.

Potential definition of recreated assets[]

(subject to change depending on feedback)

  • Recreated Asset: A recreated asset is a image file that is based on an asset that appears in game, but has been edited by the uploader in a substantive way. For example, cropping a screenshot to remove the player HUD is not a substantial enough edit to make the file a recreated asset, but filling in holes that are present on an in game flag is substantial enough to make the resulting file a recreated asset. Data mined textures are not recreated assets, as they are created by the developers but may not have visual effects that are applied to the in game version.

Sub-vote: 'Lazarus' images[]

  • Should images of NPCs, that in normal gameplay are always deceased when encountered, resurrected with console commands be considered recreated assets?

No recreated assets[]

(Note: this policy will only be part of the vote if the majority opinion is against the use of recreated assets)

  • All images used must provably be from in game with no substantial alterations, such as a screenshot or in game textures retrieved from the files with Nifskope or similar programs. It is on the image uploader to provide proof of the images origin if it is called into question, and if they cannot provide this information the image will be deleted.

Guidelines only, no specific policy on usage[]

  • File pages for recreated assets must follow these guidelines:
    • The file name must identify it as a recreation.
    • The file description must state what in game asset it is replicating, what game this asset is originally from, and where in this game it can be found. It is on the uploader to provide proof of the images origin if it is called into question, and if they cannot provide this information the image will be deleted.

Guidelines and policy on usage of R.A.[]

  • When deciding on what type of asset or image to use, the main considerations are the images quality, the isolation of its subject, and the faithfulness to the subjects in game appearance. Above all, the main aim should be to provide an accurate representation of a players experience with the subject while playing the game. What asset type is used should be whichever most accurately conveys this player experience.

if an in game asset fails to fully they are clearly identified in their gallery or infobox caption as a recreation, and additionally must meet the following guidelines.

    • The file name must identify it as a recreation.
    • The file description must state what in game asset it is replicating, what game this asset is originally from, and where in this game it can be found. It is on the uploader to provide proof of the images origin if it is called into question, and if they cannot provide this information the image will be deleted.

Result[]

Vote passes, recreated assets are allowed to be used on the wiki. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 14:47, 1 June 2022 (UTC)
