"My passport is Pakistani, my roots are in India. And in between all of this, there is a border. There is a border marked with blood and pain."
―Sana Ali to Kamala Khan[src]

Sana Ali (Urdu: Ű«Ù†Ű§ŰĄ Űčلی) is the daughter of Aisha and the maternal grandmother of Kamala Khan.

Biography[]

Early Life[]

Partition of India[]

"The day you left India."
"It was the middle of Partition. It was a hot summer night. I somehow got separated from my father. Until a trail of stars appeared and took me right back into his arms."
―Kamala Khan and Sana Ali[src]

Sana was born to Aisha and Hasan. During the Partition of India, Sana, Aisha, and Hasan got to the train station. Aisha soon left the couple, saying she needed to take care of something. Hasan guided Sana into the train, but Sana got distracted and walked away. She soon saw Kamala Khan, who noticed Sana. Khan used her bangle to make circles on the ground.

Interested, Sana walked on the circles, but they suddenly disappeared and turned into particles. Sana grew even more interested and followed the particles, which led her back to Hasan. However, Aisha never came back. Sana grew up to tell the story of how she reunited with her father by following the stars.[1]

Living in Karachi[]

Raising a Family[]

Sana, along with her father Hasan, successfully relocated to Karachi in Pakistan from India as a result of the Partition, although her mother Aisha did not make the trip. Hasan informed Sana that her mother was a djinn, as he believed in the mythology that had been crafted after the Clandestines arrived in Asia, which Sana had no issues with as she dismissed it as mere genetics.[2] Sana later married, took the surname Ali and had a daughter named Muneeba[3]

While raising her daughter in a house in the affluent neighborhood of Clifton, Ali's constant sharing of theories regarding Aisha being a Djinn led to Muneeba being shunned by her neighbors.[2] In her adult life, Muneeba met and eventually married Yusuf Khan, with whom she had a son named Aamir. However, Ali did not attend her daughter's wedding. The Khan family left Karachi shortly after and relocated to New Jersey in the United States of America.[4] Ali continued to remain in Karachi, where her son lived with his children Owais and Zainab. Living in Clifton, the family often went to parties or had lunch at boat clubs. Ali also acquired a pet golden retriever, whom she named Magnum.[2]

Sending the Bangle[]

"Did you get my gifts?"
―Sana Ali to Kamala Khan[src]

In 2025, Ali sent her granddaughter a gift via mail package, primarily consisting of some jewelry. Among the items in the box was her mother's bangle.[3]

A few days later Ali was called via video call by Kamala, who was hoping to learn more about the bangle's origin. Ali explained that the bangle initially belonged to her mother before she disappeared during the Partition of India. Kamala wanted to learn more about her great-grandmother but Ali was reluctant to talk about the topic and the video call was abruptly ended.[5]

Seeing Visions[]

The day of her grandson’s wedding, Ali saw a vision of the train during the Partition. She quickly called her granddaughter asking if she had also seen the vision of the train, after she confirmed that she did, Ali urged her and her mother to come see her.[4]

Reunion with Family[]

"I feel like I'm trying to piece together a hundred things, and I'm just breaking more than I can fix."
"That's quite a puzzle. But then, if you have lived like I have, lost what I have, you learn to find beauty in the pieces."
―Kamala Khan and Sana Ali[src]

Ali greeted her daughter and granddaughter, alongside her other two grandchildren at the train station. She then rode with her daughter and granddaughter to her home where they were greeted by Magnum. Upon seeing that Kamala had stumbled into her room of art, she told her about how she's spent most of her life trying to recreate her memories of everything she had lost during the Partition, and that she was already aware of their lineage as human-"Djinn" hybrids, as well of the bangle's supernatural abilities. Ali believed that the bangle was trying to trying to tell Kamala something through the visions, and that Kamala needed to come to Pakistan in order to find out the meaning of said visions.

Later that afternoon, Kamala returned home to talk about how she learned more details about the bangle from the Order of the Red Daggers, but still felt she wasn't close to solving everything. Ali assured Kamala that she would eventually figure things out, remarking that she herself had yet to find her own identity at her old age. Later that night, Kamala left to hang out with her new friend, leaving Ali and Muneeba alone in the house again for several hours, where they talk about their complicated relationship.[2]

Making Amends[]

When Kamala Khan did not come home, Muneeba Khan tracked her phone. Ali and Muneeba arrived at the location to see Kamala making hard light with the Quantum Bands. Although Muneeba was worried, Ali stated that their family was magical, proud of Kamala. They then said high to Red Dagger, who left in a hurry. Kamala handed Ali a photo, which contained her, Aisha, and Hasan. Ali grew happy as she finally got a picture of her mother and father.[1]

Personality[]

"People are claiming their identity based on an idea some old Englishmen had when they were fleeing the country. How is one to deal with that?"
―Sana Ali to Kamala Khan[src]

Ali is described by her own daughter to be an absent minded person who spent too much of her time daydreaming and fantasizing, a trait that's shared with her granddaughter Kamala Khan. Muneeba Khan resents Ali and wishes Kamala not to be like her, despite this Ali still loves her family and keeps a close relationship with Kamala.

The Partition of India had a deep impact on Ali's life, even in her elder years she continues to be affected by those events and the disappearance of her mother. Like Muneeba, Ali is aware of the rumors regarding Aisha's mysterious disappearance and the shame it inflicted on her lineage, she was reluctant to talk about the topic when Kamala brought it up.

Ali seems to struggle to understand modern technology, as whenever she makes a video call she sticks the phone too close to her face.
