Fallout TV seriesEnclave uniform

Enclave uniforms are attire used by the Enclave for cohesion and maintaining esprit de corps. The designs are either recycled from designs used by the United States Armed Forces or their developments, such as the scout armor used by Whitespring field operatives, evolving from military combat armor. This article does not include civilian attire, used by nominally non-military personnel, such as Enclave citizens or presidents. While uniforms are enough to pass as an Enclave member, during an alert, all members are expected to carry identification papers on their person at all times and show them upon request.[1][2][3]

Fallout 76 features the Enclave in a significant capacity and defines the original look of the Enclave in the years following the Great War. Several additional uniforms were released through the Atomic Shop and are marked with the Atom if they have not been featured elsewhere, due to the looser standards defining their inclusion.

Clothing[]

Officer uniform[]

Designed to make use of the Enclave's chosen color scheme, tan and black, there were two main types of uniforms used.

The older variant of the Enclave officer uniform, is a two-piece garment. A double-breasted tunic with large hip pockets is worn with a khaki dress shirt and black tie, a utility belt, a pair of leather gloves and pants similar to the operative armor, with the legs tucked into a pair of leather boots. Enclave insignias are displayed on the sleeves, with two golden stars in each corner of the patch. Officers wear a peaked cap bearing the Enclave cap badge and black officer's laurels on a tan visor.[4] The uniform remained in use as late as the 23rd century, used in portrait and identification shots.[5]

Enclave officer uniform female

The Enclave officer uniform used in the field in the 23rd century[6] consists of two layers. The basic one is a black uniform, covered by a tan full-body outfit. The upper part has a prominent flap buttoned up on the side, with black gloves securely locked in place. The lower part of the uniform has no zipper and the pants are tucked in securely into black, knee-high boots with three side buckles each. The outfit is worn with a communication device over the right breast, a small pouch attached above the knee, a black utility belt and a black field cap with the Enclave device on the front.[7] It can be put on backwards unintentionally.[8]

Colonel uniform[]

Based on the pre-War LAS-009 general's overcoat,[9][10] the Colonel uniform has a single-breasted coat worn over a base black uniform with a high collar and boasts large pockets on the thighs, two smaller pockets under the lapels, and the front can be closed with six buttons. A utility belt with two large metal clasps, a storage pouch and a pistol holster completes the design.[Non-game 1][11]

Operative underarmor[]

Gameplay articles: Fallout 76, Fallout 76

Standard operative gear issued to Enclave field agents in Appalachia, designed for the forest and urban scout armors, the underarmor consists of two parts. The tunic is worn with a protective vest bearing the Enclave sigil on the abdomen, two belts and additional protectors over the sleeves, covering the leather gloves. The tunic extends over the pants, which have regulated, laced side, and zipper endings, typically worn with the flaps covering the sides of the black tactical boots. The uniform has two versions; forest underarmor is tan with brown highlights, while the urban variant is gray with black highlights.[12]

Scientist uniform[]

A white full-body uniform, sealed against the environment, with a gold plexiglass dome enclosing the head. Air is provided by a breathing apparatus and filter mounted on the rear.[13]

Atom Signalman outfit[]

Designed for Enclave communications and recon troops, to report enemy movements (e.g. communists),[14] the simple field uniform consists of a light green T-shirt, faded camouflage pants and a pistol belt with suspenders. The belt includes six carrying pouches, a galvanometer, a blasting machine (detonator)[Non-game 2] and a wooden roll with a red signal cable. The uniform is worn with an olive green forage cap and optionally a communications headset.[15]

Atom Intel officer uniform[]

A modified version of the standard officer uniform, designed for Enclave intelligence officers,[16] replacing the tan fabric tunic with a black leather jacket. It is worn with a beige shirt and a black tie and brown pants, with a peaked cap in brown with a tan ribbon and black visor.[17]

Lab coat[]

A plain white lab coat with four clasps to keep the coat isolated from environmental conditions or contaminating the Enclave civilian clothing.[18]

Other uniforms[]

In Fallout 2, Enclave members wear a number of uniforms described to be military, though reusing other sprites. These include:

Armor[]

Enclave troops in the field may wear standard armor for protection. If issued combat armor, the breastplate usually displays the insignia of the Enclave.[29][30] Power armor is also painted with the faction's insignia.[31] As such, Enclave power armor constitutes a duty uniform for deployed troops.[32]

Scout armor[]

FO76 armor urban scout set
Gameplay article: Fallout 76

A post-War design derived from combat armor, the scout armor is a lightweight, protective body armor set specifically created for Enclave covert operatives.[Non-game 3]

The segmented, rounded armor includes a torso assembly with axial protectors screwed together, and additional segmented armor plates worn on the limbs, attached using leather straps. The utility belt includes six carry pouches and a protector for the nether regions. Rather than a helmet, the scout armor is designed to be worn with a mask, obscuring the wearer's features completely, while protecting them from airborne contaminants. The set is finished with several camouflage patterns, including a forest camo in shades of brown and green, urban camouflage using blue and gray, and solid black for covert ops.[33]

It was utilized by the Enclave's covert forces until their demise in 2086.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The design of the Enclave officer uniform went through several iterations when Adam Adamowicz was conceptualizing it. One of the earlier versions included a more mechanical, black look, with segmented armor and a hood for female officers. The final iteration used in the game featured an eagle with its wings spread out as a cap device, rather than the Enclave sigil. When the textures were updated, the inventory icon was unchanged.
Rommel-Enclave Comparison

Early concept art for Fallout 3's Enclave drew heavily from the uniforms of the Nazi military.

  • Colonel Autumn's uniform went through several iterations, with the final design being a refinement of what Adamowicz called "Colonel Autumn: Teutonic Version,"[Non-game 4] as identified on the concept art. Some exploratory concepts included an all-black uniform evoking not merely German militarism, but the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany, with the peaked cap (featuring an eagle pin), goggles and pose almost perfectly matching a portrait photo of Erwin Rommel, one of the key Nazi generals.[Non-game 5] The final version simply updated the details and defined the colors: Black for the underarmor and tan for the overcoat. The coat's model was then reused in Operation: Anchorage, as General Chase's overcoat, and in Lonesome Road, as the US Army General outfit.
  • The officer uniform included in Fallout 76 was conceptualized by Katya Chiu (then credited as Katya Gudkina), and went through multiple iterations, from a jumpsuit echoing Adamowicz's design and worn with a peaked cap, through a more formal look with a forage cap (and optional skirt for female officers), to a single-breasted tunic with various methods of buttoning-up. After settling on the design that closely resembled the final version, further variants were explored. Apart from the final, alternate versions included a double-breasted black overcoat and a much more ornate cavalry uniform with a flap buttoned on the side, breeches, cavalry boots, and a red aiguillette.
  • The operative underarmor, also conceptualized by Katya Chiu, went through multiple iterations, from a full-body jumpsuit with goggles to a simple vest worn over a T-shirt and vest. The chosen version was the third variant of the armor.
  • The signalman outfit is based on vintage uniforms and equipment, with a belt and suspenders loosely resembling the M1936 kit issued to U.S. World War II troops, while the gear worn on the belt includes a galvanometer, a 10-cap blasting machine and a roll of detonating cord, making it more consistent with demolition equipment than signal corps. The headset is also not a signalman's headset, but one very similar to the vintage David Clark H10-56 aviation headset with a microphone.
