Underarmor refers to a type of garment designed for wearing together with power armor of various types, meant to increase the comfort of the operator when wearing the outfit for extended amounts of time.
Types[]
Recon armor[]
The Brotherhood of Steel worked on modifying recon armor, calling their prototype "Mark II Recon Armor."[1] The Fallout 3 Official Game Guide describes it as light armor, with extra speed and agility.[2]
Undersuit[]
Designed from the ground up for use in conjunction with the West Tek power armor frame, the next generation underarmor is a form-fitting suit designed for maximum comfort and utility while operating the armor. Although it (or the hood) is not a requirement for operating the armor, it makes long-term use more comfortable and reduces chafing. The hard points and attachments on the suit also improve performance, interfacing directly with the armor's systems.[Non-game 1] The suit wasn't designed for use outside of armor: It features only two pockets on the hips for documentation and maps and a simple flap over the crotch. Its comfort and lack of bulk allow the operator to combine it with a variety of tactical gear and protection, for example, combat armor.[Non-game 2]
Behind the scenes[]
- Both the recon armor and the uniforms are internally coded and referred to as underarmor. Whether this is a retcon or evolution of the design is not certain.
- The underarmor would serve as the basis for the armors of Kells, Arthur Maxson, and likely Cade. The assets still remain in the files and can be seen below:

Bowditch: "Ah... you're a bit early today, sir. Regardless, I'm happy to report that the development of the Mark II Recon Armor unit is proceeding as planned."
Owyn Lyons: "I'm pleased to hear that. Do you anticipate any setbacks? Last month's progress was, well... let's call it 'underwhelming.'"
Bowditch: "There may be a slight delay in the enhancement of the ambulatory gyroscope. A few of the parts I need were lost in the recent... inventory reduction."
Owyn Lyons: "You'll make do, Bowditch. You always do."
Bowditch: "Thank you, sir. I appreciate it."

The bodysuit’s surface is covered with an assortment of interface ports and connections to connect the wearer with the Power Armor frame, over it. The Brotherhood of Steel employ these as the base of their standard uniforms, ensuring that as many of their personnel as possible are ready to wear full armor. In battle, the uniform is normally worn under other armor if Power Armor is unavailable, while senior Brotherhood officers often wear a bomber jacket or armored battlecoat over their undersuit."

Form-fitting suit meant to be worn while operating power armor. It has a variety of hard points and attachments for interfacing with a PA frame. This suit isn't necessary for using power armor for short stints, but it facilitates more comfortable long-term use (and has less risk of chafing)."
