"Long, Long Way From Home"[1][2] is the first episode of the fifth season of Cobra Kai.

Synopsis

Daniel’s new ally-turned-housemate tests Amanda’s patience. Miguel searches for his father in Mexico. Terry starts to transform Cobra Kai.

Plot

Cobra Kai releases their first commercial explaining the reasons with their success and encourages others in the Valley to join their dojo.

At the LaRusso house, Chozen is swimming in the pool and Amanda is surprised to see him fully naked. She tells Daniel that she is upset about how he didn't tell her that Chozen will be living with them. Amanda talks about the tournament and how Kreese is in jail. Daniel counters saying that Cobra Kai will be a bigger threat once they expand. He promises to not keep his kids in danger.

Later, Miguel arrives in Mexico and asks the local surfers for directions. However, one of the guys takes his backpack and the other guy offers him a price to buy his own backpack. He buys his map and backpack and continues his trip.

Johnny also arrives in Mexico with Robby and shows him stuff he bought at the store. He shows him FBI (female body inspector) shirts to wear during the trip.

Daniel and Miyagi-Do meet where he explains even if Eli won the boys division, he has to adhere to the bet he made and close down Miyagi-Do. He tells them that regardless of what happens, Miyagi-Do lives inside of them. Sam talks to her father about his plan and wants to make things right. She blames herself but Daniel takes the blame and explains why talked to Chozen. He ends saying that he needs to keep everyone safe and keep Sam and the others out of danger.

In Mexico City, Miguel arrives at a restaurant that he hears his father owns, and meets a man named Hector with a few men playing cards. He asks the man about his mom and grandma. However, after the man threatens Miguel, he realizes that he's the wrong man and leaves.

Robby is upset with Johnny about they are on a road trip to find Miguel. He explains to him that he wants to fix things with him and he needed his help to find him. Johnny tells him that the trip was to help Robby and Miguel bond but ends by saying that if he wants to go home, he can take him to the bus stop. Unfortunately, the conversation causes Johnny to run off the road.

Daniel shows Chozen the news headline about Cobra Kai winning the tournament and tells him about the dojo and Terry Silver. He tells him that they to incapacitate the head of the snake but when Chozen shows him a pair of sai, Daniel gets shocked. To calm him down, Chozen tells him the purpose of them. Daniel tells him that he wants to expose Terry and has to be careful but Chozen says that Terry needs to be careful with him.

Sam is training in the LaRusso dojo while watching her match with Tory. Miguel calls her to tell her that it's been a hard process to find his dad. Sam explains that they care about him and what he's doing is dangerous. She clarifies why Carmen and Rosa left Ecuador and it was a good reason. Sam then asks Miguel if he was going to ask her about the tournament but Miguel gets upset that she's talking about herself and how there are more important things in life than karate but Sam hangs up. When Miguel overhears a conversation, he sees a man named Hector Salazar taking out the trash at the same restaurant he was just at, and realizes that man is his father.

Johnny fixes the van and when Robby asks about the van, he tells him the story about he and Daniel were looking for him and the fight at the chop shop. He admits to his son that he hasn't been there for him and how he failed Miguel. Johnny explains that he's the reason why Miguel went to Mexico. He also says that he is fixing the mistakes he made and tells Robby if he wants to make things right, he needs to help Miguel and Johnny also understands Robby's regrets with Miguel. Johnny calls Carmen and explains that he's okay. Carmen says that she should've gone there herself but Johnny says to not put herself in danger and promises to find him.

Daniel brings Chozen to the Cobra Kai dojo and witnesses Kenny Payne handing out cobras to other people and explains that there are kids planning to join Cobra Kai but don't know what will happen to them. Chozen sees Terry spar with students and analyzes his movements. He explains that the moves were taught by Kim Sun-Yung. Daniel thought it was a random person but Chozen tells him that he's a real person. Back at the LaRusso dojo, Chozen tells the history of Kim Sun-Yung. He says that he never taught Tang Soo Do and had a more controversial style, which drew the ire of other martial arts masters enlisted to train the US military after World War II, including Chozen's uncle Sato. Chozen performs a takedown and tells Daniel that his style was deception, meaning no honor, no mercy. He warns Daniel that he needs to be careful because all direct attacks are recognizable. Daniel says that he wants to expose Terry but in order to do that, Chozen tells him he needs to think like a serpent.

Miguel goes to a festival in Mexico where he sees Hector kissing his girlfriend Maria, and playing with her son. The boys ball bounces near Miguel, and he approaches him to retrieve the ball, He speaks to the boy in Spanish but he runs away. Johnny gives Robby money to buy his bus tickets and snacks. He goes to the same group of surfers, but kicks one of the guys off when he steals his wallet. Realizing it was a scam, Johnny threatens the surfer but when the other guy tries to strangle him, Robby saves Johnny, and the two fight the surfers; Robby and Johnny win after the surfers are knocked out thanks to their karate teamwork. Miguel follows Hector but when the kid loses his soccer ball, he gets it and Miguel saves him from getting run over. Hector thanks Miguel in Spanish, and he and Maria invite him over for dinner, which Miguel happily accepts.

Johnny tells Robby it was a mistake to bring him to Mexico but Robby says he wasn't. Robby tells him that he wants to stay because he also wants to make things right as well.

Terry explains how Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang closed and how the valley is looking up to Cobra Kai. He says that this is only the beginning and they won't be strangers for long. He also says this is the start of something special and because they have a lot students, they are going to have more senseis and welcomes Chozen.

  • Tory doesn't physically appear in this episode, but rather in the Cobra Kai commercial, as well as flashbacks to the 51st All Valley fight and on a YouTube video of that tournament that Sam watches.
