News Notability[]

Hi J,

Just wanted to sound you out on something. As you know in the News Digests we've covered wasteland news as what is essentially our only exception to the Fallout exclusive focus, on the grounds its made by the same Devs and has a special relationship with Fallout.

According to Twiiter, the first Skyrim DLC is going to be announced imminently. I'm not planning on covering it, other than as a comment (in the comment part) as although it is Beth made, it doesn't have much of a link to Fallout. Do you think this is the right balance?

Ta Agent c 22:41, April 30, 2012 (UTC)

Hey J, minor change in plan... GameInformer have an exclusive this month with Zenimax online on their "Elder Scrolls online" project. I'm including the Skyrim DLC and this as a very brief mention to say they exist, that Fallout Online therefore isn't Zenimax-Online's secret project, and that we wont be covering either the DLC or TES online in any more detail. Dummy wording is in my sandbox if you want to take a look.

Regarding the question at hand, your suspicions go in the right direction. There are two possibilities for you:

  • Quick solution: Replace "border" with "color" in {{Image needed}} and {{Mbox management}}.
  • Future-proof solution: Update {{Mbox}} along with the accompanying CSS, and then switch all page management templates to using {{Mbox management}} (you can probably simply import The Vault's versions).

Well, if you don't count the DLC's, then it is still a pretty uncommon weapon. (And I don't think we should consider DLC's when talking about weapons also found in the vanilla game.) If you truly feel like it should stay, then I won't argue. It is certainly a good weapon to grab early in the game, although by the time you get your NCR rep up enough to get it, you should already have a better weapon by then. :P Your choice. An Idea[]

I thought about it some more and I think we should actually leave fixed locations out. Just for right now. I have an idea: We should create an official list of which weapons/armour should be considered notable if they have a fixed location. Then we can create a symbol template to put next to these sorts of NL, so experienced users don't remove them thinking that they're not notable under our general policies. Maybe write out this list and put it up as a vote to see what the community thinks of it. Dragon Skål! 17:22, May 10, 2012 (UTC)

Only reason why we should remove them for right now is because technically our policies don't dictate fixed locations for loot as notable. So we'd be kind of making up a rule there. Dragon Skål! 17:23, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
If you'd like, I can write out a rough list, that we can go over later. I'll be sitting down and working on the Moose anyways, so I should have the time to do that as well. Dragon Skål! 17:27, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
GECK isn't really needed, I don't think, when making the list. (Although it will be needed when find locations afterwords.) It'll be pretty simple to deduce which items are highly sought after, and whether or not they're hard to find, which would warrant mentioning them in the first place. (Such as the NCR Combat Armour. I don't think this is notable, as you can find it at all major NCR bases, and you can loot them off of NCR hit squads constantly if you are vilified by the NCR. But I would consider the Plasma Caster as being notable enough to list. Or even the tri-beam laser rifle) Dragon Skål! 17:41, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
I actually have no idea how good they are in New Vegas. I mostly just remember how over-powered they were in Fallout 3 when used against you, and how easily they broke. What is next, you going to start banning people for what they say in the street or to there friends. Really now, you have no right to tell people what they can and cant do outside this wiki, that is well outside your powers and authority. And I tell you what, while those blocks stand and you continue to bully people, don't be expecting any kind of good faith, support or technical advice from The Vault in future. Fixed Locations[]

Before starting my list, this is what I am taking into consideration:

  • Either is not sold by merchants, or shows up rarely in a merchant's goods.
  • Usefulness and re-sale value.
  • Either drops rarely or not at all from all types of enemies.
  • This list does not include DLC content, when considering how common vanilla weapons/armour are in them.
  • After these points have been taken into consideration, all of the working factors are added together to determine whether the item in question in notable for fixed locations.
  • (Only FO3/FO:NV) - Means that the game specified is the only one where the weapon is notable for fixed locations. For instance, miniguns are common in Fallout 3, but extremely rare in Fallout: New Vegas.
  • (FO3/FO:NV only weapon/armour) - Means that the weapon/armour is either unique to the game noted in parenthesis, or that the only notable fixed locations are in the game mentioned.

Now, here is the list I compiled of notable weapons and apparel when considering fixes locations and the points I listed above: (This list includes FO3/FO:NV)

-Weapons-

  • Silenced 10mm pistol
  • Infiltrator (FO3 only weapon)
  • Sniper Rifle (Only FO:NV)
  • Sawed-off Shotgun (Only FO:NV)
  • Minigun (Only FO:NV)
  • Gatling Laser (Only FO:NV)
  • Tesla Cannon
  • Gauss Rifle
  • Flamer (Only FO:NV)
  • Shiskebab (Only FO:NV)
  • Railway Rifle (FO3 only item)
  • Deathclaw Gauntlet (Only FO3)
  • Fat Man
  • Missile Launcher (Only FO:NV)
  • Plasma Rifle (Only FO:NV)
  • Tri-Beam Laser Rifle (Only FO:NV)
  • Bottlecap Mine
  • Nuka Grenade (FO3 only weapon)
  • Steel Saw (FO3 only weapon)
  • Rolling Pin
  • 12.7 Pistol (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Assault Carbine (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Light Machine Gun (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Marksman Carbine (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Plasma Caster (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Recharger Rifle (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Multiplas Rifle (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Grenade Machinegun (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Powder Charge (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Time Bomb (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Chainsaw (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Hatchet (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Throwing Knives (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Cattle Prod (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Throwing Hatchet (FO:NV only weapon)

-Armour-

  • I noticed you already compiled a list for this category. Let me know if you would like me to provide a list as well.

-Notes-

  • I have exhausted both lists quite thoroughly, and this is what I believe to be the only candidates for weapons/armour worthy of being noted when considering fixed locations. Everything else is either commonly dropped by enemies, is commonly found lying around in the wastes, or is commonly sold by traveling and permanent merchants.
  • Let me know if you believe anything should be added or removed. Dragon Skål! 07:33, May 12, 2012 (UTC)
I was thinking this should not be a factor as it is subjective to each individual player style->Usefulness. Resale value is good. Just my two-cents. Don't hurt me.--Kingclyde 17:28, May 12, 2012 (UTC)
I categorized usefulness by two extremes, and then ran them under the other points I was considering. So for instance, even though a silenced .22 pistol is found very rarely outside of shops, I would still never consider it as notable, even if it might be useful for stealth characters. But let's look at, say, a plasma caster which is no doubt highly sought after, even by players not fond with energy weapons. Even if a player wouldn't wish to actually use the plasma caster in combat, it still has usefulness in re-sale value or even as a decorative piece in your home. Dragon Skål! 17:35, May 12, 2012 (UTC)
I agree with KC, price should be taken into account, not usefulness. Also, rarity, even if the item lacks usefulness. Limmiegirl Lildeneb Talk! ♪ 22:15, May 12, 2012 (UTC)
Then you're agreeing with me as well. :') I never said usefulness was a singular point I was looking for. If I had taken usefulness alone as reason enough to list a weapon as notable for fixed locations, then my list would have been greatly expanded. Usefulness is only a small factor I that is looked at compared to the other points I mentioned above. Hence, my example of why I didn't add a .22 pistol. Or an AMR. As for price and rarity, if you read back again, you'll see I already listed those as contributing factors. Dragon Skål! 22:20, May 12, 2012 (UTC)
  • There we go! I added in a note in my original message to help clarify matters. Dragon Skål! 22:26, May 12, 2012 (UTC)

Lucky Horseshoes again[]

I kinda forgot about this; I've done now further research and played tons of Lucky Horseshoes matches. I'm certain that the situation when being equally close (example 17-25), the one to get there first has the advantage. I got it all four ways: I got lower first, I got higher first, Festus got lower first, Festus got higher first. In all scenarios the first who got there had the advantage. In given exmple: if you get 17 first, and opponent then gets 25, you've already won; if you get 25 first, and opponent then 17, the opponent must draw more. You told me to edit it, not sure how to type it but I do my best. I don't mind if you edit it afterwards, if you see it better written some otherway. --John Acey 17:36, May 12, 2012 (UTC)

NCR-Great Khan War debate result[]

Well me and Garoux recently had a debate on when the NCR-Great Khan War started and what it included and the end result we got was to talk to one of the two bureaucrats, so I came to you. Basically, we hoped that initially you would be able to come to a conclusion, but the one we came to was making a page called War on Raiders, which would be akin to the War on Terror page on Wikipedia. Basically this page would have the NCR-Great Khan War merged in to it, but with additional information on the NCR's fights against the Vipers, Jackals and Fiends. So we come to you asking if you approve, if I should make this page and if you can come with any alternative. --Mr. Youtube 01:40, May 14, 2012 (UTC)

Just letting you know that I reverted your edits to the help page. Many of the items you listed are not unique or rare in any way, and either way, these changes need to be put up for the community to vote on. What counts as notable isn't really up to us. Here are the ones that I have a problem with:

  • Shock baton
  • Advanced radiation suit (Fallout 3)
  • Pulse mine (Fallout 3)
  • Pulse grenade (Fallout 3)
  • Advanced radiation suit (Fallout: New Vegas)
  • Combat armor, reinforced
  • Legion Praetorian armor
  • Legion Vexillarius armor
  • Mad scientist scrubs
  • NCR Ranger combat armor
  • NCR salvaged power armor
  • Recon armor (Fallout: New Vegas)
  • Scientist scrubs
  • T-45d power armor (Fallout: New Vegas)
  • Valence radii-accentuator
  • Vault 19 jumpsuit
  • Proton axe
  • Scientist glove
  • Lever-action shotgun
  • Arc welder (Fallout: New Vegas)
  • Bumper sword
  • Satchel charge
  • Saturnite fist
  • Cowboy repeater
    • Some of these I'm very surprised at. Such as the pulse grenade or the cowboy repeater, which are extremely common, whether you're considering merchants, loot, or drops. Others are an infinite resource and quite easy to obtain. I'm looking at items such as the saturnite fist or the radiation suit. Dragon Skål! 21:31, May 14, 2012 (UTC)
I'm just trying to be careful. We have a lot of users these days talking about how we're just making up rules as we go, and I want to prove them wrong. At the moment, fixed locations and valuable items aren't in our policies as factors that contribute into what we consider notable loot or now. As for the list you came up with, I am mostly in agreement with what you have added. But I believe we should have limits on what we should consider as notable for fixed locations. For instance, there are no nail boards found just lying around in New Vegas, I believe. I would never consider it notable to list though if there turned out to be 1 or 2 places where you might find one. The 9-iron is another good example. I believe there are only 3 fixed locations for this weapon. But it's a crappy weapon still, and it doesn't belong in the notable loot section. I think we need to ask these questions first:
  • How rare is the item sold by merchants?
  • What tier item is it?
  • Is there only a limited amount of this item?
  • Is it unique?

Once we ask ourselves these questions, I believe we can properly judge which items are of note. Dragon Skål! 23:52, May 14, 2012 (UTC)

Hey J. You know, I was thinking: We have mandatory admin endorsements for chat mod applicants, what if we implement an admin endorsement for patrollers? My curiosity ; ([]

Heyya J! I'm Ken and I'm new in fallout. (about a year maybe) I'm playing Fallout New Vegas only so I don't know much about other Fallouts. But what attracted my attention is that the fact that the playing year is 2281! Having a great war 100 years or so ago and live in vaults. Nuke falling above and irradiate everything on ground level. And sunset sassparilla is still untouched... but that's besides the point.

So my question is this: Why is it that the year is so advanced and having all of those crazy power weapons and even had those cyberdogs, they're still in on those late 1990s and below kind of style. The musics (but sometime I think it's quite fun to listen) and the terminals and even they're aiming posture, is from the 70s. There's no laptops no telephones (but I think they don't need one in a vault eh...) and no 21st century musics and stuff... Despite having past the 21st century and even the 22nd century(I didn't mentioned the 23rd because they're stuck in those vaults) but they're still use the 20th century style. No offense though...

If you would take time to answer my question I'd be much appreciate it, and the reason why I ask you this is because you are a player that had quite the experience... Much Obliged!!! --197.195.3.197 09:14, May 17, 2012 (UTC)

I have also been visiting and making minor edits as an anon for a few years before that. I have read the policies and guidelines multiple times and understand the different reasons for reverts, having made many reverts myself. • Pulse Grenade/Mine - Not notable. Both are extremely common in both F:3 and F:NV. Certainly no need to list fixed locations when you can find them both everywhere.
  • Silenced 10mm Pistol - I listed this because it passes my tally system. It is not dropped by enemies, and there is only a finite amount, not being sold by merchants. (Correct me if I am wrong here. I don't re-call ever seeing one being sold though.)
  • Backwater Rifle - This is a unique weapon.
  • Shock Baton - This is an extremely common weapon, and can be found in an infinite amount.
  • Gauss Rifle (F:3) - This is a unique weapon.
  • Assault Carbine - Is only a tier 2 weapon, and can be found very easily. Enemies carry this weapon, and this weapon can also be found regularly as random loot and being sold by merchants.
  • Plasma Rifle (F:NV) - This is only a tier 1 weapon and is found extremely common as random loot and as enemy drops. Is also sold very cheap by most merchants.
  • .45 Pistol - Only a tier 2 weapon and is found very commonly with infinite sources.
  • Arc Welder - Only a tier 2 weapon, is found commonly, and has an infinite source from LR stores.
  • Breathing Mask - Very common item and is sold infinitely from LR stores.
  • Proton Axe - Common weapon dropped infinitely from lobotomites.
  • Satchel Charges - Common and you can get them for free constantly.
  • Saturnite Fist - Very common weapon dropped infinitely from lobotomites.
  • Advanced Radiation Suit. Very common suit sold cheaply by nearly all merchants.
  • T-51b Power Armour (F:3) - This armour is unique.
  • Chinese Stealth Armour (F:3) - This armour is unique.
  • All Purpose Science Suit - This armour is unique.
  • Combat Armour, Reinforced - Found commonly at mid-level in random loot containers, and is sold by multiple merchants.
  • Any Legion Armour - Commonly found. Especially from assassin squads. Can be found in an infinite amount.
  • Lucky Shades - This headwear is unique.
  • Naughty Nightware - This cloth is unique.
  • Any NCR Armour - Is very commonly found, especially with assassin squads after you.
  • Recon Armour - Sold by multiple merchants, and is commonly found in random loot containers at mid-level.
  • T-45d Power Armour - Extremely common, and is sold by multiple merchants.

Hope you like it. I will adding the lists in just a moment. It's 5 in the morning, so I'm going to add those in and then I'm going to finally get some sleep. :) Dragon Skål! 09:51, May 31, 2012 (UTC)

It's finished! I think it looks pretty damn good, if I may say so myself. :') Dragon Skål! 10:06, May 31, 2012 (UTC)
Fair enough. I still say we need to keep the vote separate though. Dragon Skål! 11:20, May 31, 2012 (UTC)
Hmm. We'll have to see. Yeah, I'm looking forward to what Clyde think of this. Haha! I think it's too late for sleep. I've been up all night writing out the next edition of Moose and working on 3 other forums I plan on putting up soon. Busy busy. Dragon Skål! 11:28, May 31, 2012 (UTC)
-sigh- Looks like you might have been right. Not one person has constructively contributed to the debate, and no one seems to be able to wrap their heads around the basic concept that this will only be for fixed locations for higher level/tier items. That and everyone acts like it's some sort of taboo now to propose a change to the policies/guidelines ever since that Yessie/Cartman debacle. Oh well. We'll see how it goes, and what Clyde thinks. Dragon Skål! 17:35, May 31, 2012 (UTC)

I'll get up there in time. I got to 20,000 (which continues to rise) at The Vault and I'm perfectly content with that. I heard you abandoned getting the largest edit count after finding someone with 1,000,000+ edits at the lyrics wiki. --Kastera (talk) 00:16, June 1, 2012 (UTC)

Notice[]

Warning blue Hello Jspoelstra,  I've changed the color back to the light green table body color and reset the .css styling. I would really like to use more "Fallouty" images, so if you know of any vault-boy images that would fit the "warning", "caution", "notice" theme, I'd love to hear it. I would consider adding custom styling for the background and text color, and possibly the image, if there was enough serious demand for it. Haven't really seen anyone but me & Sig use it yet. You should completely familiarize yourself with Nukapedia's policies and guidelines if you have not yet done so.

Nukapedia is service-marked?[]

Hey Js, I just stumbled upon this site, and it says there that the Nukapedia name is service marked. That means there might be legal issues for us to use the name, it might be a good idea to contact Wikia for them to look into it. Limmiegirl Lildeneb Talk! ♪ 21:32, June 1, 2012 (UTC)

Hey J. I just wanted to let you know that I finally got the Champion of Justice today ;) I'll be coming for that silver one you have soon =) --Skire (talk) 15:01, June 2, 2012 (UTC)

It'd be fun, not many have the Symbol of Order I don't think. I actually got two awards in that one edit - a Mr. Fixit (4,500 (surprised only 4 people have it)) and the CoJ. I hope I can stick it out for another 100 days, but schoolwork is getting heavier and I might be going back to China this summer =/ Let's see what happens. --Skire (talk) 15:20, June 2, 2012 (UTC)
My father's from China and his mother is in the hospital in a very delicate state of health. She's 92. So we might go back and visit and perhaps spend some time for vacation there too. I'm not sure about internet access there but I'd have most likely missed a day on the trip there anyway. --Skire (talk) 15:37, June 2, 2012 (UTC)
On another note, I have a question: I noticed some of the wiki achievements were disabled or discontinued after awhile. After browsing through your extensive list of earned achievements, it seems that quite a few have been cut off. A look at the achievements special page confirms that. I was curious as to why. --Skire (talk) 16:26, June 2, 2012 (UTC)
Oh, I see. Well that's a shame, because now it'll take longer for me to catch up ;) Onto something unrelated - I've been translating a few pages on the Chinese Fallout Wiki and I'm thinking of adopting it. It has absolutely no community besides the stream of spamming bots. --Skire (talk) 16:35, June 2, 2012 (UTC)
Don't worry, I'll still be around full-time here, but I wish to fix up the place a bit. There's very little content and up until now a lot of it is done via Google Translate, which produces broken and often incomprehensible Chinese. It also gives me some form of practise too =) --Skire (talk) 16:49, June 2, 2012 (UTC)

( Oh, I see. The pages are manually translated, instead of using Google Translate, so it'll take awhile to get everything going. After that I'll start fixing up some templates and other stuff. By the way, do images have to be separately uploaded in order to be used there? --Skire (talk) 19:38, June 2, 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, J. How about others' images, do I have to attribute them? --Skire (talk) 22:40, June 2, 2012 (UTC)

Hey Jspoelstra, I was wondering if I could your opinion on this edit: here on the Ulysses page. It doesn't seem too bad, but some parts do strike me as original research or speculation, so I'm not sure what to do. Paladin117>>iff bored; 23:10, June 4, 2012 (UTC)

Magazines[]

Here's a thought: In any given area, if there are a large number of fixed skill magazines in a single area, would it only be notable if there were a large amount of skill magazines for an given individual magazine? Or would an over-abundance of varied magazines warrant notability as well? Dragon Skål! 00:41, June 5, 2012 (UTC)

I figured that would be the case! Thanks J. Dragon Skål! 00:53, June 5, 2012 (UTC)
Actually, speaking of which, can you check the GECK for all fixed skill magazine locations in Goodsprings? Sigma brought up a good point of them not being noted on the Goodsprings page. There's a pretty good number of them that are not randomized, so I think it's worth a mention. Dragon Skål! 01:11, June 5, 2012 (UTC)

Patroller Request[]

Hello J. I'd like to apply for the position of patroller. I believe I am deserving of this position because A. I completely surpass the requirements (the requirements are: active on the wiki for at least 1 month, and make 250 edits in the main space. I personally have been active for 4 months and have made 269 main space edits). Also, I am on the wiki for many hours a day (usually anytime from 3pm to 11pm on weekdays), always checking the recent activities and ensure there is no vandalism being done. Continuing, I would believe that these powers could help with my project, especially since there are no tables to track progress. I'd like to thank you for any consideration, and I bid you good day. --3 of Clubs "This is my road, you'll walk it as I say" 01:13, June 5, 2012 (UTC)

Something to look into:[]

We have a weird situation at the moment. I removed some extremely non-notable loot from Mitchel's House, (Laser Pistol, Doctor's Bag, etc.) and it was met with quite a bit of opposition, as certain users here felt it was in the best interests to pick and choose when to follow policies. However, Gunny has brought up the fact that our current Notable Loot list isn't actually in a correct policy page, rendering it void. I remember there being a vote, but after looking through the forums, I can only find discussions over Notable Loot from after the vote, but not the vote itself. I suppose this puts our Notable Loot policy into an awkward state, with no actual proof that a vote was put into motion. (That I can find so far.) What are your thoughts on this matter? Dragon Skål! 04:08, June 5, 2012 (UTC)

Binoculars[]

I'm glad you didn't remove that. The rarity of them definitely gives them a place on that page.--Bunny2Bubble 06:19, June 5, 2012 (UTC)

Lol, I don't to create a big division now, but it's good to hear;) I knew you're on the side of addition, not subtraction. I hope you don't find it ill, mine and Leon's spat. I'm not the kind of person to sit by idly while something I don't like happens. The skill magazines sadden me too. They're so helpful throughout the course of the game. I just can't stress enough, this is all for those half a million anons that come through here a day. To help them. Those binoculars may have plotted a player's attack on Cottonwood Cover or something.--Bunny2Bubble 06:26, June 5, 2012 (UTC)
I appreciate you looking over my posts. As for me, it's time for bed. I have a prior engagement in the morning but afterwards I'll have a couple of free hours before work. I look forward to see what you have to say about the notable loot. Goodnight!--Bunny2Bubble 06:41, June 5, 2012 (UTC)
