ED-E (pronounced "Eddie") is an eyebot residing in the Divide. He is a mandatory companion of the Courier in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Lonesome Road.

Background[]

This ED-E was created as a copy of the original ED-E Duraframe eyebot, manufactured by the Hopeville missile silo bunker's automatic engineering facilities.[1][2] The necessary information to create him was obtained by a long-range scan of the original eyebot in the Mojave Wasteland.[3][4]

After the New California Republic's successful attack on Navarro, they started searching through the Enclave's technology. While not understanding the purpose of one device, they recognized the symbols on it from those found on structures in the Divide and hired the Courier to deliver the package there. After they had delivered it and left, however, the mysterious device started transmitting codes to the launch computers of the pre-War military bunkers, signaling them to launch the nuclear missiles stored in their silos, only to end up crashing against the sealed doors and detonating underground.[Non-game 2][5] The resulting catastrophe led to the Divide being torn apart by earthquakes and storms and the device shattered. In the aftermath, the intact computer systems scavenged material to create a fleet of eyebots for maintenance, including one that was made from the collected fragments of the activation device.[Non-game 3] This eyebot was later put on stand-by in a docking port within the Hopeville missile bunker, remaining there until the Courier's return to the Divide in 2281.[6]

Personality[]

Unlike its Mojave counterpart, this version of ED-E has much more emotion and demonstrates complex feelings, likely as a result of lacking the damage that the original sustained. It communicates in a larger variety of beeping sounds, from happy to sad to angry to excited. Also because of its fully intact systems, ED-E can access the duplicated memory banks of its counterpart and replay audio recordings of the original's creator Whitley it has stored.

  • "<Confirmatory beeping>"
  • "<Angry beeping>"
  • "<Scared beeping>"
  • "<Determined beeping>"
  • <Expository beeping>

Notes[]

  • ED-E is one of the few characters to stay marked as essential in Hardcore mode because if he were to die, one would not be able to complete The Courier if they wanted to stop the missile launch.
  • With Lonesome Road installed, as soon as one repairs the original ED-E in Primm, it will have access to the duplicated ED-E's workbench and reloading bench functions, even if one has never set foot in the Divide.
  • If the player character does not repair the original ED-E in the Nash residence before entering the Hopeville missile silo bunker and meeting the duplicate during The Silo, they will have unique dialogue where they will not initially refer to him as ED-E (though the HUD still gives him that name).[7]
  • ED-E is one of the only two non-hostile NPCs that inhabit the Divide; the other being Ulysses.
  • In the description of the Camarader-E perk, ED-E is referred to with male pronouns.
  • If one enables the general subtitles, ED-E's ending (composed of beeps) will be interpreted on the screen. The subtitles also translate in-game beeps, such as “Sneaky beeping” when entering sneak mode.
  • Unlike his counterpart, ED-E is capable of carrying faction armor.
  • One of ED-E's memory recordings played during the add-on reveals that the attack that incapacitated the original, as seen in the Fallout: New Vegas official trailer, was the result of an attack by raiders.
  • Entering the main chamber of Ulysses' Temple without freeing ED-E from his maintenance pod first will grant the Lonesome Road perk.
  • Finding all five upgrades for ED-E completes the ED-Ecated achievement/trophy.

Appearances[]

The duplicated ED-E appears only in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Lonesome Road.

Bugs[]

  • PCPC ED-E can be used multiple times in a row to repair weapons by exiting The Divide and entering it again but eventually he will stop repairing weapons for a while - even waiting for 24 hours doesn't help. [verified]
  • PCPC ED-E may not wait when told to, at first it may stay in place for awhile but will suddenly appear without warning, following again. [verified]
  • PCPC On rare occasions ED-E will not follow the player character when they release him from the repair chamber. [verified]
    • To fix this activate a door needed to pass and wait twice, ED-E will open the door, but not follow. At this point, reload the last save and ED-E should act as normal.
  • PCPC Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes talking to ED-E will give the repair weapon option, even if the players weapon condition is above 20%. Selecting this option will bring the weapon down to 20%.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Asking ED-E to repair a weapon may cause him to stop following you. This is caused by an engine bug relating to script variables in dialogues, as one of the variables used to repair weapons will overwrite the variable which tracks his waiting/following state. [verified]
    • ED-E can be restored to full functionality by entering the console command set "04004d16".waiting to 0
  • PCPC Xbox 360Xbox 360 ED-E's pod will not open upon activating the open pod command on the nearby terminal thus rendering one unable to continue the add-on. [verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes if the player leaves the Divide directly after finding ED-E for the first time, he may follow them out and into the Mojave. A simple fix is to go back to the Divide and then leave again but the player can have 3 companions at once during this glitch. [verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Attack ED-E just outside the entrance to the Divide long enough to knock him unconscious, then exit the Divide. Re-entering the Divide, possibly after an extended period, causes you to lose ED-E as a companion permanently. However, the game will still recognize ED-E as a "companion" and the player still receives the "Enhanced Sensors" perk. This causes the scripted encounter after the Cave of the Abaddon to break the game, rendering the entire Lonesome Road add-on unresolvable. [verified]

Ulysses: "The community that was once here... and the package you brought... both had markings of the Divide. Markings of America. You've seen the marks, the symbol. As early as the Hopeville silo, maybe. Carried it etched on your weapons. The Divide, its buildings, its people, were built around those same markings, surrounded them here... ...markings like the flag on my back. When I followed your road to the Divide those years ago, I saw the symbol I wore all around me. An Old World symbol. Strong, to survive here - its people, strong. Outlast the Bear, outlast the Bull. Promise of something better. Caesar was right to want it dead. NCR was right to want to rake their claws in it. Seeing it... changed me, just as seeing Hoover Dam changed Caesar and the NCR. Seeing it end changed me, too."

  5. The Courier: "You said I brought it from the West?"
Ulysses: "It was a device, a detonator. One I'd never seen before - or heard before. You carried that thing to the Divide. I know because I followed you as you walked the road, watched you do it. You brought it here, to the community you built. And you are responsible for what happened after - when the device opened, started to speak. When it did, the Divide answered back. Those missiles you've seen, buried in their silos. They exploded beneath the ground, cracked the landscape. Sand, ash... the dead... the Divide skies became a graveyard."
