This article is about the block that makes up the portal. For the blocks that make up the frame, see End Portal Frame. For other uses, see End portal (disambiguation).

The end portal block is a block generated when an end portal or exit portal is activated, which teleports the player between the Overworld and the End.

Obtaining[]

In Java Edition, the end portal block cannot be obtained as an item. It can be placed only by using block placement commands such as /setblock, or simply by building End portals. In Bedrock Edition, it may be obtained as an item via inventory editing, add-ons or by using bugs.

Usage[]

End portal blocks can be used to teleport into and out of the End. When a player or other entity in the Overworld or the End touches an End portal block, it is instantly taken to the other dimension. If a single portal block is placed using commands, it can still be used to travel between dimensions.

All entities traveling to the End appear on the obsidian platform, recreating it if necessary. Players traveling to the Overworld appear at their individual spawn point, while other entities appear at the world spawn point.

Properties[]

  • End Portal blocks can be destroyed in Creative Mode. This does not affect adjacent End Portal blocks.
  • End portals do not reduce fall damage.‌[Java Edition only]
  • The top surface of an End portal is 34 the height of a full block.[verify]
  • The End portal is one of the only blocks without a conventional texture or entity texture; it instead duplicates and layers a starfield pattern.
  • If TNT is detonated on an end portal, no blocks in its blast radius are destroyed.
  • Ridden entities (and their riders) pass through the portal without being teleported.
  • The ender dragon cannot teleport through portals.
  • In Java Edition, the wither cannot teleport through portals, but can do so in Bedrock Edition.
  • If /setblock is used to place an End Portal block in the Overworld, Nether, or in a custom dimension, then the End Portal block teleports the player to the End dimension. If the End Portal block is placed in the End, then the End Portal block teleports the player to their spawn point.
  • Items can fall through an end portal, including falling blocks, such as TNT. The items appear in the End dimension.

Piston interactivity[]

End portal blocks cannot be pushed by pistons. They also cannot be pushed nor pulled by sticky pistons.

Java Edition
October 5, 2011The end portal block is teased by Notch in Screenshot.
1.0.0Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3The end portal block is introduced, but is nonfunctional in terms of teleportation.
The end portal block can currently be broken using TNT.
It uses the untinted grass block texture on the bottom face of its hitbox.
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4The end portal now teleports the player into the End.
The texture of the end portal block has been changed.[verify]
The end portal block is now TNT immune.[verify]
The end portal no longer uses the grass block texture underneath.
1.4.212w36aAll[verify] entities can now travel through end portals.
1.915w49bThe hitbox height of the end portal block has been increased from 116 of a block to 34 of a block.[verify]
The wither and ender dragon[verify] can no longer travel through portals, including the end portal.
1.1116w32aThe block entity ID of the end portal block has been changed from AirPortal to end_portal.
16w40aEnd Portal The starfield effect has been changed to match that of the end gateway block. It no longer changes perspective with respect to the player, but now remains static with respect to the game screen.
1.1317w47aPrior to The Flattening, this block's numeral ID was 119.
1.1721w13aEnd portals now render on the bottom face.[1]
The wireframe hitbox of the end portal has changed once more, to no longer stretch to the bottom of the block. Whether the actual entity collision box also changed is unknown.

End portal "item"[]

The following content is transcluded from Technical blocks/End Portal.
Java Edition
1.0.0Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3-1End portals have an unobtainable item form corresponding to its block ID, which has interesting model behavior. It can be obtained via inventory editors with numeric item ID 119.
In this version, players would immediately start out with this item upon generating a world or when respawning.
If an end portal item already existed in the hotbar, using pick block on an existing end portal block would switch the hotbar to select that block like with any other item.
It can be placed in the Nether.
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3-2The player no longer starts out with this item on world generation or when respawning.
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4When attempted to be placed in the Nether or End, placement will fail but the placement sound and hand animation will still play. Replaceable blocks such as fluids, grasses and vines are deleted, and the item is also consumed in survival mode.
1.2.5preEnd portal items can now be obtained via pick block in Creative.
1.3.112w16aEnd portal items can now be obtained in singleplayer worlds via the /give command using the respective numeric ID.
12w17aEnd portal items can no longer be obtained via pick block in Creative.
12w18aLikely due to a client-server desync, end portal blocks placed with the item in the Nether/End will render the block for a frame.
1.814w25aThe direct item form of end portals has been removed from the game. It can no longer exist as an item in any way, only as a placed block.
Bedrock Edition
?End portals exist as an item.
?It is possible to obtain end portals as an item simply by replacing them with water using a bucket.[2]
?End portals can no longer be obtained through replacement by water.
1.9.0?It is possible to obtain end portals as an item by using /setblock ~ ~ ~ air 0 destroy when standing above an activated end portal block.[3]
1.11.0?The above method no longer works.

Appearances[]

Java Edition
1.0.0Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3End portal items have an unstable item model which changes depending on blocks which are targeted or in loaded chunks. It uses this model in inventories, when held in first or third person view or as a dropped item.
End Portal (cube) (inventory) JE1 The end portal item initially uses a full cube model, like full cube blocks do.
End Portal (flat) (inventory) JE1 If a placed end portal block is targeted,[more information needed] the item model will change to a flat plane, matching the shape of the wireframe outline box that can be seen near the bottom of an end portal block when targeted.
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4Grass Block (top texture) JE3 BE1 The end portal item now uses this texture in inventories, when held in first or third person view or as a dropped item.
Beta 1.9 Prerelease 5Grass Block (top texture) JE4 BE2 The end portal item now uses this texture in inventories, when held in first or third person view or as a dropped item.
This is due to the grass top texture changing in this version.
1.4.212w34aThe end portal item now uses the aforementioned texture when in an item frame.
1.513w02aEnd Portal (inventory) JE4 The end portal item now uses this texture in inventories, when held in first or third person view, as a dropped item or when in an item frame.
This is due to major texture storage changes in this version.
1.7.213w42aEnd Portal (inventory) JE5 End portal items now appear translucent in the inventory. As a dropped item, in a player's hand, or in an item frame, they still appear opaque.
This is due to changes in item rendering in this version, likely to allow for stained glass to appear translucent as an item.
NOTE: the end portal item was still animated in this version. However, the provided image appears stationary due to technical limitations.
1.814w05aMissing Texture JE3 The end portal item now uses this texture in inventories, when held in first or third person view, as a dropped item or when in an item frame.
This is likely due to model changes in this version, and end portal items not having an item model defined.
Bedrock Edition
?Info update (texture) BE1 The end portal item uses this texture.[4]
?End Portal (inventory) BE The end portal item uses this texture.
