The Swatting Sultans were the city of Boston's resident baseball team before the Great War.

Background[]

The team had previously won World Series titles in 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, and 1918.[1] The afternoon of October 23, 2077, the team would have faced off against their rivals from Texas at Fenway Park in the last game of the 2077 World Series. If victorious, the Swatting Sultans would have delivered their first series win in nearly 159 years.[2] However, the Great War prevented the game from occurring.

The team was coached by Dusty Wilder,[3] and the players were led by star pitcher Matt "The Missile" Murtagh.[2] Murtagh was on the lineup to throw the first pitch for the World Series game, and was accordingly highly nervous on the morning of the game. Because of this, he arrived at Fenway Park early in the morning with teammates Nathan Broadhurst and Jim Walker in order to warm up. The three of them survived the initial nuclear strike in Boston thanks to the stadium's high walls and eventually went their own ways in search of their loved ones and to find safe shelter. Walker would eventually be killed by hostile survivors in the town of Bedford, while Broadhurst ultimately settled down at Settler's Ridge in Appalachia, where he left behind his baseball bat and autobiography to inspire future generations.[4]

Notes[]

The baseball equipment store in Diamond City is called Swatters, selling the namesake baseball bat the Swatter.

Appearances[]

Boston's Swatting Sultans are mentioned in Fallout 4, as well as in Fallout 76, introduced in the Expeditions: Atlantic City update.

Behind the scenes[]

Real-life Boston Red Sox pitcher Babe Ruth was nicknamed the "Sultan of Swat." The actual Boston baseball team remained unnamed in Fallout 4, and it was not until Fallout 76's update Expeditions: Atlantic City part one, Boardwalk Paradise that the team was seemingly formally named the Swatting Sultans. The note which introduces this, Nathan Broadhurst's autobiogrophy, also includes a reference to the Red Sox in its Editor ID (NPE_NoteNathanRedSox).

This afternoon, right here in the city, Boston's swatting sultans will swing for the fences. Led by star pitcher Matt "The Missile" Murtagh, Boston hopes to defeat Texas, and deliver their first World Series victory since 1918."
