"Partings" is the fifth episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season One. It aired on September 23, 2022.

Synopsis[]

Rhovanion[]

Nori helps The Stranger recall his vocabulary.

The three Mystics find the crater where The Stranger had landed, and it is clear that they are seeking him.

In a forest, The Stranger saves the Brandyfoot family from three wild wolves, by striking the ground and knocking them away.

Southlands[]

Adar and his Orcs prepare to reveal themselves. Bronwyn, Arondir, and the refugees of Southlander towns, gathered at Ostirith, deliberate on what to do.

Later in the episode, a large number of Southlanders, led by Waldreg, choose to serve Adar, and leave Ostirith. In the company of Adar and the Orcs, Waldreg pledges allegiance to him, believing that he is Sauron. Adar has Waldreg kill Rowan, for the reason that "only blood can bind".

Númenor[]

After Isildur's failure as a sea cadet, Elendil refuses to freely let him into the host that will set sail with the Queen Regent to Middle-earth to save the Southlands.

In an argument with Galadriel, Halbrand briefly declines participating in this venture. Galadriel and Elendil recruit a lieutenant through a sword duel, resulting in Valandil's promotion.

Pharazôn debates his son Kemen concerning his own vision for Númenor and his willingness to let the Queen assist an Elf. The King Tar-Palantir tells his daughter that only "darkness" awaits her in Middle-earth. At night, Kemen causes an explosion on one of the ships in the harbor made ready for departure, and Isildur rescues him from the fire, but does not tell Elendil of Kemen's crime.

Galadriel tells Halbrand of the impetus for her unyielding hunt for Sauron, that Sauron had killed her brother. Halbrand is eventually reconvinced to join the sailing to the Southlands.

At the end of the episode, the Númenórean host departs.

Lindon[]

Prince Durin dines with Elrond, Gil-galad, Celebrimbor, and other Elves in the central woods of Lindon. Durin avoids answering Gil-galad's question about the recent, supposed surge in Khazad-dûm's activity. He tricks Gil-galad into giving him the table they are dining at. Afterward, Gil-galad and Elrond converse, and each voices his concern about the other's dishonesty surrounding the Elves' need for mithril. Elrond refuses to break his oath of secrecy that he had made to Durin in the prior episode. Gil-galad recounts to Elrond a questionable legend of the origins of mithril beneath the Misty Mountains, called "The Song of the Roots of Hithaeglir", and discloses to Elrond that he believes the Elves will soon fade without a great supply of mithril.

The next day, Elrond relays this urgency to Durin, and Durin resolves to try to convince his father to aid the Elves.
