Tatos are a mutated plant species and a consumable item and ingredient in Fallout 4 and Fallout 76.

Background[]

A tato is a mutated hybrid of a potato and a tomato plant, which emerged after nuclear fallout triggered mutations that allowed the two species to cross-pollinate.[1] The resulting hardy plant is radiation-resistant and produces edible tatos,[2] which have the stem and skin of a tomato, with the brownish flesh of the potato.[Non-game 1] Like the latter, it can also be used as a low-tech battery to power lamps[3] or even create a small power generator.[4]

However, it is primarily a foodstuff. While it is nutritious and contains many micronutrients necessary for the immune system,[5] tato taste leaves much to be desired. It is likened to ketchup-flavored cardboard[1] and usually just called disgusting.[6] However, when properly prepared or combined with the right ingredients, it can be delicious. Some of the ways it's used in cuisine include chips,[7] pies,[8] salads,[9] soups,[10] stews,[11] or as part of gravy to thicken and enrich the taste.[12] Even flowers from the plants can be used to produce tea.[13]

Tatos are very easy to grow in almost any kind of soil and stakes covered in tato vines are a common sight across the wasteland.[14][15] With the right care and fertilization (eg. brahmin or human feces) they can produce bumper crops,[16] although they need regular protection from pests (eg. mole rats).[17] Due to their ubiquity, tatos have replaced potatoes and tomatoes even in wasteland culture. For example, someone might "go down like a sack of tatoes",[18] while a comedian might be pelted with them by a displeased audience (or for humiliation).[19] Reportedly, a tato cult has even sprung up in the wasteland at one point.[20]

The tato restores some Hit Points at the cost of radiation damage. It can be very easily farmed from tato plants and is a useful ingredient in several crafting recipes.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The plural for tato is alternatively spelled as tatos or tatoes.[18]
  • A cut Sunday Brothers' cabin terminal entry would establish that tatos can be used to brew alcohol, as "Tater Shine" (similiar to potatoes).[21]
