Batates são um híbrido mutante das plantas de tomate e batata, criado pelas duas plantas polinizando uma a outra.^[1] O 'fruto' da planta tem a casca e o caule de um tomate, e uma polpa marrom que lembra uma batata. Comumente cultivado na comunidade, Apalaches e em the Island, seu fruto é notável por ser nutritivo e fácil de crescer,^[2] embora seu sabor deixe algo a desejar.^[3]
