Redirecting[]

I'm redirecting to Commonwealth, since there's very little here, none of it unique or useful. --DarkJeff 21:10, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

Moved from article[]

There is a lot of debate as to whether or not the Institute has a connection to the Enclave, the center point of this debate being the origin's of Harkness's A3-21's plasma rifle (Something only obtainable one way or another through the Enclave),(except in the first two fallouts) and the technological/production capabilities of the institute in general. (Being that they can produce androids (something that even the Brotherhood of Steel Scribes deny as little more than a fantasy) and in such large numbers that runaways are apparently a frequent problem.) Officially, there has been no word whatsoever either denying or confirming this theory.

Logan's Run is not about escaped androids, but rather people.

Never specifically mentions why all these post war scientists like your dad, dr Li and many others are so gifted with not only knowledge of pre war technology and theorems but are also able to employ them for new or more advanced use. Maybe theyre connected to the institute? Not much is mentioned in regards to origins so who knows? --69.225.254.227 10:36, 24 August 2009 (UTC)derfthebarbarian

"There is not much evidence provided to demonstrate that they are evil"? But Zimmer and Armitage are evil characters, and will drop fingers when killed, if you have the Lawbringer perk.--Kreivi Wolter 18:47, November 2, 2009 (UTC)

This was not mentioned in F:NV[]

Somebody put this was mentioned in New Vegas which it was not, I removed it.

Fallout 4 setting[]

Wouldn't The Commonwealth be a great location for Fallout 4? With The Institute perhaps being secretly run by the Enclave for sinister objecives?

The Institute IS mentioned in F:NV[]

Actually, Mr. House's obituary (appears under "Data" in your pip boy only if you kill or incapacitate Mr. House) specifically mentions The Institute. It says that he attended The Institute and graduated from there (would have been in 2040). Someone should revert this page back to the corrected information.

Though cheated of his inheritance, House attended the prestigious Institute in Massachusetts— A tragedy has befallen Mankind

For me its close, but are we sure its the same Inistitute... Houses' use of the term would be from Pre War (I doubt even his network has recent info on East Coast events). I think its likely, but we'd need something to put it over the top. Agent c (talk) 21:16, January 23, 2013 (UTC)

This mention is almost certainly pre-war (I.e. MIT) and for all we know may not mean the institute in FO4. Unless this is confirmed in game, this is conjecture and absolutely does not belong in this wiki unless under a section specifically marked as conjecture. 2.100.117.110 03:08, December 21, 2015 (UTC)Frank O.

F3[]

I would have thought having several members be from there was enough to say that this wasn't a rumour... Agent c (talk) 21:13, January 23, 2013 (UTC)

So The Institute keeps being mentioned in thesurvivor2299 messages, worth a mention?

50.181.193.183 00:09, December 6, 2013 (UTC)

No. It's unclear if that website is even official, and Bethesda hasn't made any statements on it. ЮраYuriKaslov - Sig image 00:12, December 6, 2013 (UTC)

Institute = MIT?[]

As far as I know, this was never mentioned in any canon source. It seems like this will be clarified soon, since there's a likely reference to the Institute in the CSS for the current countdown on the official Fallout website (presumably for a Fallout 4-related teaser, ARG, or announcement), but the mention of the Institute being post-war MIT seems dubious right now. If nobody has a canon citation, or even a comment from a developer, it should probably be removed. --203.173.28.95 10:45, June 3, 2015 (UTC)

With all due respect, that's just a page of CSS. Where is the reference?2.100.117.110 03:10, December 21, 2015 (UTC) Frank O.

Seeing how apparently the institute was born from CIT, which was based in Cambridge Massachusetts, I believe that at least a mention of the possibility of it being the same institute would be appropriate. After all, they are two institutes well-renowned for their advanced research in the field of engineering, based in the same city. --Rambard (talk) 00:03, June 10, 2017 (UTC)

Fallout 4[]

Shuoldnt fallout 4 be incuded in the list of games that the institute is in?

While it is certainly most likely, the Institute has yet to be mentioned in any of the Fallout 4-related content. The closest we got is that enemies named synths have been shown. Paladin117>>iff bored; 15:37, July 20, 2015 (UTC)

Kidnappings[]

I came to this page to find out what was bad about the Institute, particularly the threat of kidnappings for the Commonwealth citizens. This page says "the Institute did begin using synths to infiltrate and even sabotage surface communities to further their own goals.", but where is evidence or reasoning for this? I suppose replacing Mayor McDonough is important, being able to control the biggest Commonwealth's biggest settlement and listen in on the paranoia. But why would they replace others, specifically "peasants", and what do they do with the human?--Trpc21 (talk) 20:25, December 12, 2015 (UTC)

Not sure about reasoning, but examples for evidence would be Roger Warwick and Paladin Danse. --Alfwyn (talk) 21:08, December 12, 2015 (UTC)
There is also a random encounter where you meet "peasant" which caught his "double' - a synth. You can help whoever you want (there is also a speech-check that help you to be sure which one is a synth and that synth also admits he is sent by the Institute).Faust-RSI (talk) 23:59, December 12, 2015 (UTC)
Yea, met Art fighting his double, but there's no explanation as to why the Synth is trying to kill the human. And Danse has no explanation; While it would be wise to have a Synth infiltrate the Brotherhood, he does not know he is a Synth, there's no connection between him and the Railroad, and he leads the questline to take down the Institute. His existence as a Synth is confusing. However, Roger Warwick is a good example of the dark side of the Institute.--Trpc21 (talk) 04:30, December 13, 2015 (UTC)
Agreed, no explanation at all. And even if you sided with the Institute with all these promises that you can change their policy, you can still do nothing. People are further kidnapped as your own settlements are further attacked by synths. Even if you play against Ayo he is still in charge. Though maybe a bug? Who else sided against him and them saw he still holds his position? Faust-RSI (talk) 09:43, December 13, 2015 (UTC)
It's definitely a bug, or development oversight, as one of patches fixed the Institute attacks so they don't occur if you are friendly with them. --Nayrael (talk) 03:47, February 9, 2016 (UTC)
"Proctor Quinlan completed the decryption of the data you retrieved from the Institute. A portion of his findings included a list of synths that went missing or escaped from their underground facility [...] Paladin Danse is a perfect match for one of the synths on that list" - a little late to the party, but this dialogue at the beginning of Blind Betrayal is pretty explicit: Danse isn't a mole, he's an escapee that the Railroad helped mind-wipe and dumped in the Capital Wasteland, it's likely Desdemona's crew didn't recognize him because it was another cell that did the rescue.--Pandaman102 (talk) 12:34, June 1, 2016 (UTC)

Harkness[]

I noticed this wiki is no longer editable, and someone has identified Harkness on the Institute page with the designation AR-13, when, according to Fallout 3, his designation is A3-21. Probably should be fixed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.252.229.221 (talkcontribs). Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

Yeah, only logged in members can edit this particular page. Thanks for mentioning it. --Alfwyn (talk) 15:39, January 14, 2016 (UTC)

Named Staff Race[]

Just bringing this up but wouldn't all the 'human' staff be gen 3 synths? as the article for Justin Ayo mentions he is filling in for Dr Zimmer, who if killed in Fo3 has a synth component on his body suggesting he was a synth. Also wouldn't it be logical if once they had the ability to transfer people's entire minds to gen 3's, they would have done it themselves for the immortality? Nick3258 (talk) 15:02, January 29, 2016 (UTC)

I'd call that speculation. We know nothing about Ayo relating to him being a synth, or any plans to transfer people's minds to them. To the contrary, a cybernetic project is rejected, and Shaun remarks that "The Institute is about preserving humanity, not some bizarre amalgamation of biology and technology". Also I don't think we should retcon Fallout 3 charcaters as synths because they dropped an android component - the Institute replacing people with synths is a FO4 concept, that wasn't there in FO3. One synth made it to the Capital Wasteland because he was forced to flee, the Institute wasn't there in any numbers for covert operations. --Alfwyn (talk) 23:45, January 29, 2016 (UTC)

Institute not as advanced as Big MT[]

The institute is not more technologically advanced than Big MT, whoever put that there in the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by GhastlyHomicidalNYC (talkcontribs) 20:10, May 19, 2016 (UTC). Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

I tend to agree that the BigMT is technologically more advanced, but in a pretty chaotic fashion, unrestrained and unguided. The institute has, probably, not the same level of technology, but they have clearer goals and more actually sane people working torwards them. So the institute is actually a powerful faction, while the Big MT is just a big heap of advanced technology, more similar to a force of nature than a human faction. --Irian (talk) 20:55, August 20, 2016 (UTC)
It's debatable. (Kelis98 (talk) 20:59, August 20, 2016 (UTC))

About Beds..[]

¿ Aren't there Beds here that can be 'Used'?? Please be 'specific', if you can.. Thanks! Andy Rampage (talk) 23:34, June 28, 2016 (UTC)

Goals?[]

I noticed that this page didn't contain the Institutes goals/intentions (which to be fair are sort of vague in game), regardless I feel like it should be added if only in a theory/interpretation section. (Kelis98 (talk) 05:28, April 9, 2017 (UTC))

Spelling Error[]

The main page is locked for some reason but there is a spelling error under the Facilities heading. Chief engineer is spelled incorrectly as rngineer.
