Method to the Madness is a side quest in the Fallout 4 Creation Club content "Fantasy Hero Set."

Walkthrough[]

Enter Hubris Comics and locate the Director's notes holotape on the desk on the top floor across from the mannequin wearing the Silver Shroud costume.

The holotape records the antics of a method actor, Dave, who got too deep into his role of "battlemage," up to the point of claiming to be able to levitate. He went on to demonstrate his abilities, boasting that he would float over to the building across the street. Use the ladder in the corner of the room to gain access to the rooftop.

Jenny's remains as well as her diary can be found on the roof, describing Dave's escape as well as the "golem" he spoke of - a sculpture on the side of a building across the street. It is not possible to make the jump without a suit of power armor with a jet pack. If not, just hop down, continue into the alley in front, and head to the back of the green patio on the right.

There are two doors there, one of which needs a key, and one that leads into Shenley's Oyster Bar. Enter the bar and head to the top. After reaching the roof, climb up some wooden stairs, then some wooden boxes to find a duffle bag containing the key to Dave's "throne room" - in reality simply the bar's restroom. Head back down to that locked door, and inside Dave's skeleton can be found, along with the steel sword and the iron helmet.

10 Investigate Hubris ComicsIn Pre-War times, I recall hearing a news story about an actor who nearly killed someone on the set of Hubris Comics. Perhaps he left something behind that may be of some use.
1 Read the Director's holotape
20 Check the Hubris Comics rooftop for cluesAccording to the holotape I found at Hubris Comics, a method actor brought an authentic weapon and armor set to the studio. After hearing he was fired, the actor then fled to the roof and leapt to another building, taking the set with him. The holotape mentions the building he escaped to is guarded by metal golems. I'll need to go to the roof and study the surrounding architecture to pick up his trail.
30 Find a way to the ledgeI've found a note that implies the actor leapt from the rooftop to a nearby building with metal sculptures attached to the walls. From there he climbed a ladder to a separate ledge where he placed something in a duffle bag. If I can somehow reach the bag, I may discover another clue as to the actor's whereabouts.
40 Enter Dave's throne roomI've reached the ledge and found a duffle bag that contained a note and a key to a throne room. If I can find the throne room, I can find out what happened to the actor.
60Quest finishedQuest completedI've unlocked the door to the bathroom at Shenley's Oyster Bar and found the body of the method actor Dave. On him were two items of note, a steel sword and iron helmet, along with a half dozen empty beer bottles. The sword and helmet appear to be well made and could prove useful out in the Wasteland.

Behind the scenes[]

The name of the quest is a reference to a common saying, meaning that there is a purpose in doing something seemingly crazy. It originates from Shakespeare's Hamlet, specifically a quote from Polonius: "Though this be madness, yet there is method in 't."

The quest and items are a reference to Bethesda's other major franchise, the Elder Scrolls, particularly Skyrim. The Iron Helmet and Steel Sword are featured on the cover of the game, and are early available items within the game. The actor 'using words of power' to cast magic is a reference to the in-game ability to use the thu'um or shouts. Levitation magic was also an ability in earlier titles.

Bugs[]

  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One The quest may never start, though many items related to the quest may appear in the world. This bug is caused by non-optional quest aliases referencing vanilla assets in Shenley's Oyster Bar. If the bar has already been cleared, these references cannot be made, and thus the quest will not start. Because they are hard-coded into the game engine, console commands to activate the quest will not work. This bug is most common in active save files after installing the Creation Club content, though the quest will start on new saves. A solution to this bug (only available for PC users) is detailed on this Bethesda.net post (see Fant0m's post).[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One The iron helmet and steel sword may not appear in the Shenley's restroom. Although the quest can be completed, the rewards will not be able to be retrieved. The items may have fallen beneath the floor of the restroom; if on PC, one can use the tcl console command to clip underneath the floor and search for the iron helmet and steel sword.[verified]
