Lorne was a member of the Free States living in the Mire region of Appalachia.
Background[]
While running away from raiders, Lorne and his daughter Darlene came upon a small treehouse up above in the trees. After realizing what an advantageous position it would be for building a residence, but lacking the technical knowhow, Lorne thought to ask Gavin McCullough for help. Gavin was a master carpenter and fellow Free States member who lived in a cabin nearby. Another group member, Caroline, volunteered to walk to Gavin's place to gauge his willingness, and he and his crew agreed to help out with the project.[1]
Under Gavin's direction, work proceeded rapidly and within a month, they expanded the treehouse into a village. Gavin designed a way to use other nearby trees to build a series of treehouses connected to one another by walkways allowing for both privacy and a sense of community.[2]
The village was completed quickly but was plagued by repeated attacks by raiders. One night, gunshots rang out and Gavin yelled to alarm the other residents. Quickly, the group ran to the windows and returned fire, but Darlene was killed. Subsequently, Lorne and the rest of the Free States members abandoned the village they had created and retreated elsewhere into Appalachia, leaving booby traps behind for anyone who entered afterward.[3]
