The United States Department of the Treasury was a pre-War department of the United States government. The Department of the Treasury was a federal executive department responsible for the creation and distribution of the United States dollar, collection of taxes, and management the United States debt, among other duties.

Background[]

In 1950, the Treasury Secretary John W. Snyder presented a replica of the Liberty Bell to West Virginia. It was put on display across the state between May 15 and July 4, 1950 for the United States Savings Bonds Independence Drive, and subsequently placed in front of the Charleston Capitol Building.[2]

Any resident of Appalachia who won the Great Appalachian Sweepstakes were required to pay a gift tax. Failure to do so ran the risk of being reported to the Internal Revenue Service, the division of the Treasury Department responsible for tax collection and pursuing tax fraud.[3]

One of the workers at the RobCo Auto-Cache 001 wanted hundreds of treasury bonds for display within the facility.[4]

The Secret Service, a division of the department tasked with protecting the nation's currency from counterfeiting as well as the leaders of government, appears in Fallout 76, introduced in the Wastelanders update. Shortly before the Great War, the United States gold reserves were emptied from the United States Bullion Depository at Fort Knox and sent to Vault 79.[5] Numerous members of the Secret Service were tasked with defending the stockpile.[6]

When the Great War of 2077 broke out, the nuclear alarm system alerted the members of the Cabinet of the ensuing nuclear exchange and which government fallout shelter to take cover in. However, most of the members had been removed,[7] leaving the Secretary of the Treasury as one of the only cabinet members to make it to the Whitespring bunker. He arrived alongside the Secretary of the Interior and Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Eckhart. With contact lost with Raven Rock as well as the president at Control Station ENCLAVE, the Treasury Secretary was next in line to become the acting president and leader of the Enclave within the bunker.[8] However, before that could happen, the Secretary died suddenly under suspicious circumstances. Thomas Eckhart would report to the rest of the bunker personnel that he died of "acute radiation posioning," before assuming the role of leader for himself.[9]

Appearances[]

The Department of the Treasury is mentioned in Fallout 76 and in the Wastelanders update.

Behind the scenes[]

The seal of the Treasury Department appears on the obverse of United States Treasury Notes. It closely resembles that used on the Series 1890 Treasury Notes, though it lacks the balance present on the upper escutcheon of the real-world version.[10]
