Personally, I think an increase in ocean detail/importance etc. is a really good idea. They seem like just an afterthought right now, and I think OP's ideas on this subject are really awesome. However, I'm pretty certain that Notch has stated that he's against large vessels like ships and planes, and I can't really think of why they would be useful other than "LOL look at the big thing I built, hurr durr" A small boat suffices perfectly well (aside from constantly breaking) However, what might be more useful (aside from increased durability or something) is to have a boat equivalent to powered minecarts and storage minecarts, and perhaps some way to link them together. That would allow for longer voyages out at sea, especially if seas get larger.

i don't have any suggestions but i think being able to go underwater would be awesome along with an ocean with... oceanybits like coral and such because whenever i go underweater on classic there are huge caves with gold and iron everywhere so i would find this amazing because i never find any iron or gold anywhere XD

He's said he at least likes the idea of giving players the elements to build them. And in any case, I can hardly see why what is essentially a mobile base with furnaces, chests and crafting tables is redundant.

This man really is a genius. Never have i seen such a clear and well written forum post.
This is an extremely well thought out idea and I would love to see this added. I think it would also be cool to be able to catch a fish under water and then transport them back to your base and put them in to a fish tank to add a little 'life'
to your home.
And for resources perhaps you can find:
+oil wells and then use said oil to power your mine-carts, furnaces, etc for extremely long periods of time
+Salt, used to add flavor to food and make new recipes (then perhaps you could split apart the salt into sodium and chloride and then use the sodium to make bombs like tnt but stronger/weaker (don't know how it would be))
+Larger but rare clumps of gold/diamonds but only found very deep down
+Rare underwater volcanos filled with obsidian and cobblestone galore
+Pearls, could be used to make decorations or fancy neck ware

Not sure about splitting salt, that seems kinda.. impossible, but everything else is nice.
I am dissapointed in ALL OF YOU for not thinking of this,
Poseidons Trident!
When wielding this tool those sea creatures will give you the respect you deserve! You'll be able to fly underwater at tremendous speeds! Holding your breath? Now who'd ever do such a thing, with this baby in your hands, you NEVER have to bother with all that 'airbreathing' junk. It also functions as a powerful weapon! Longer then a sword and as damaging as a diamond sword, this thing is 100% UNBREAKABLE. (Unbreakableness of the wielder not guranteed)
There are 3 steps to crafting this godly tool.
1st you need the head.

2nd you need the shaft.

Finally you must fuse the two together.
= Golden Block = Trident Head = Trident Shaft
I had an idea like this yesterday but didn't feel like posting it. Glad to know I'm not the only one thinking that the "Oceans" in MC are pathetic.
I just finished an underwater project and most of the ideas suggested here would have helped. It gets way too dark too soon underwater.
Maybe we could have a new type of armor, one specifically for going under water.
How about a helmet made of glass, for extra air?

Underwater torches... I dont know of a crafting recipe but I know if you build a structure like this:
[] []
it will stay underwater. but it gives such little light...
I really hope Notch makes the oceans a lot larger... I want them to be like the way the land is but upside down and in the water, with random mountains and really deep holes that go to cave structures. Not just sand or dirt at the bottom, but rock and life (seaweed and sponges sound good).
Yeah. I always wanted to make an underwater house, but the darkness and th lack of anything interesting deterred me. =/
I made a little cave underwater and added a torch with glass on top sealing the water from coming and and the torch makes light into the underwater area a little bit, though underwater torches you stated would be great, simply because it can save dirt blocks as I have used much more
Love the idea of oceancraft. We can finally get sponges (that work) in Alpha through this. We can mine 'wet' sponges and put them in the furnace to dry them out, thus making them the type of sponges they have in creative meaning we can easily build underwater without that whole frustrating flooding thing that goes down.
(wet sponge from ocean floor) + = (which them equals WIN for underwater crafting :biggrin.gif:)

Build a zombie a fire and you keep him warm one night, set a zombie on fire and you keep him warm the rest of his life.
With the recent addition of stones that emit light, even underwater, I assume this idea could be coming to fruition :biggrin.gif:
I love it. However, we would still need a method to remain underwater for long periods of time. Underwater plant life would be a plus, as well as visible schools of fish and perhaps larger creatures (sharks, octopi) some of which would be hostile. Could make spears for underwater weapons instead of using a sword. Spears could be thrown when above water to also capture fish for food.
This would be great for me; I am currently building an underwater city and I'm very disappointed at a) how difficult it is (what with the restrictions because of breathing) and :cool.gif: how shallow it is. I also wish for some kind of scuba gear (like somebody mentioned, more stuff like Bioshock--I have a sort of airlock and it would be cool if I could walk around the sea floor (without being able to swim upward) and not die).
If the ocean was more deeper, terraneous, etc. I could actually make tall buildings with 'scenic' views of incredible natural structures and whatnot, and if I had scuba gear I could work more efficiently.
I mainly support those two things, although pretty much everything mentioned in the OP (save for maybe the natural disasters, I feel like that could ruin somebody's hard work a bit too easily) sounds like it could be a great addition.

Indeed, sponge would help with underwater building greatly.

I will soon as I get on my computer(I'm on my cell phone ATM). :biggrin.gif:
Indeed, this forum does move quite quickly.
Glowing coral for deep, deep waters where its all dark.
Life! No invisible fish! Let's see schools of fish being chased by sharks!
Bioshock-ish themed kind of sea! Some '50s dated music to go with exploration of deep underwaters!
Basically, WE NEED MOAR BIOSHOCK THEME
Now.
I was thinking glowing jellyfish, but yeah. Glowing coral would be cool.
that's a great idea to have some theme music while you are underwater for a while(maybe 3-6 minutes)
and schools of fishes and sharks chasing them is a great idea, more occupation inside the ocean/sea.
to your home.
