Yeah, we DO need bigger boats, but there is a problem. How would they work? I mean, our current boat is an entity, and so is our minecarts. Entities disappear eventually, so how could be solve this? We cant just have a boat made out of solid wood blocks simply move.
Dunno what you mean about entities disappearing. At all. :sad.gif:
Like I said, though, bigger boats are made of boat pieces. I believe I saw a more complicated version of such an idea somewhere.
As for movement, I'm thinking you have to manually steer the ship, raise or lower sails for speed control, or weigh anchor for brakes( and lift it back up!) but once it's going, it'll keep moving with that velocity until it is steered or hits something.
I'm pretty sure some person out there has came up with a good idea for boats XD
ah yes underwater caves and changing landscape underwater is something ive wanted since i first died underwater. Encouraging people to build "rapture" sized buildings, i also like this because it ties in with my suggestion to have random chests filled with goodies scattered around the ocean floor.(and this implemented would allow the chests to be in obscure places)
love the idea, and the best part of all of this is deeper, bigger sea's and creatures, but what creature's could they be:
1) they would need to be blocky like all the other animals
2) fast swimmers would make water more interesting
you could have smaller dangerous creatures like sharks but if you spend very long in the ocean a big creature could appear like a sea dragon, cthulhu, lock ness monster, etc. when it appears sea's will rise slightly around it and you and waves will start to role, and its biggest weekness....

I like how Notch cares about peoples religions... then again, I guessed if he called the Hell-ish place 'America' it wouldn't do much justice either...
I'm a huge proponent of waves and wakes, especially on the high seas. I feel that this should be substantially dangerous to explore unprepared. For instance, being pushed by waves may slam you against a cliff wall, which (if you live near rocky beaches you already know this) is pretty lethal.
I also feel like trying to build with sand, gravel, soil or any other soft/weak substance would eventually erode if it's constantly exposed to tidal activity.
Other bits that I'm strongly for:
*Craftable underwater gear that prolongs time able to be spent underwater or prevents drowning (blue tunic!)
*Craftable underwater lighting
*The ability to build ships (probably the biggest stretch)
*Better options for removing water (super sponges? Pumps?)
*Deep sea fishing different from beachside fishing.
*Ocean depths in excess of 100 spaces of depth.
Water Pressure: Yes, BUT that description tells me that making glass windows two or more blocks thick either makes them indestructible to pressure or does nothing. I do not like this vagueness.
Underwater lighting: Craft torch surrounded by 8 glass blocks=compact waterproof lighting unit. Yay!
Alternatively, just put glass around your torches exposed to water, duh. Of course, there's the small matter of placing said torch once the spot is dry...
Heh, that never actually occcured to me. However, automatically detecting whether a glass block has another glass block behind it, and how that would interact with water blocks at different depths, etc. would be very difficult, as far as I know. I still think having to make reinforced or small windows would work just fine.
I might rewrite my description later. I do think it could be shorter and the concept simpler.
Edit: @Evrim would you be willing to make a thin divider image for the OP? The it's using currently is pretty ugly, but still neccesary for organization.

oceancraft = awesome idea. harpoons should be implemented, like water bows kinda
