As stated in the OP, and throughout this thread many times, disable (set to OFF) the "Threaded Optimization" setting in your NVIDIA Control Panel.
Unfortunately, as I have posted a few times in detail, that is not the final solution. Multicore is still not working when following the instructions to the letter. Going into Nvidia Control Panel and forcing some other settings (per my previous post) helps, but eventually the problem returns. Sometimes a reboot will fix it, and other times it requires a cold shutdow/startup. Even that's not a guarantee.
While I suspect this is an Nvidia problem, simply pointing people to the same solution, which doesn't work, is not helping matters.
Until Multicore functions properly, folks will have to stick with Standard, unfortunately.
Im having some serious issues, i installed sonic ether's unbelievable shaders, mod loader but for some reason i can't install optifine on my mac, i made everything, deleted meta-inf folder, tried magic launcher, tried to install in a clean minecraft.jar file, nothing seems to work, the graphics menu never change, if i can get some help over here i would be very appreciated.
Maybe the shaders mod is conflicting with optifine. Yeah, some mods can conflict with optifine, so you might wanna test out or lookup which mods conflict with which mods.
There appears to be some sort of a memory leak with Optifine? It's the exact same problem described by cocoa 647, My memory usage just turns into a diagonal line when I press F3, always steadily climbing. Doesn't happen on vanilla MC. Optifine works well for about ten seconds, but within a minute of gameplay, I can't move whatsoever because the FPS is 1. Happens on Standard, Smooth, and MT, I tested all three on a fresh minecraft install. It's frustrating, to say the least, because Optifine is arguably my favorite mod. If it would work properly. It's immune to everything. Looking in the sky will appear to fix it, but when I look back down, it continues as if nothing happened, and it happens on every setting I tried to change, as well as while I am only standing still.
Can't ModLoader dynamically inject custom terrain textures into Minecraft? The only way I could find to do this and still have my mod compatible with Optifine was to load the terrain texture out of the RenderEngine, write my custom textures into the image buffer, then store it back in.
I haven't actually tested this for Optifine compatibility, but it's this kind of thing that makes me think the black screen could be on the other mods' ends, if they were doing similar low-level workarounds. Just a thought.
Just using ModLoader and OptiFine HD A2 Multi-Core in OS X (10.7.3, 2.66 C2D, Nvidia GeForce 9600M GT 512mb) I get a black screen on load, regardless of which order I install them. Kind of a bummer, was hoping to utilize both cores. Haven't tried it in Windows yet - was hoping the multicore optifine would help me easily run in OS X. I'll poke around this thread some more.
[-snip-]
Stop being dumb, perhaps? Black screen is because you didn't deleted META-INF folder.
MCPatcher will always delete it, so that's why you were able to use Minecraft after it.
If you're installing OptiFine, don't use MCPatcher's options for same functionality.
Has Minecraft's performance gotten steadily worse over the versions or something?
I used to be able to run MC on Far even without this mod, and further with (around Beta 1.8 and before). But now, setting it to Normal +64 or above, it starts to unbearably stutter, then crash with an out of memory error. I keep a close eye on memory usage in both the F3 overlay and windows task manager just to make sure; it NEVER reaches anywhere close to the 1GB I have allocated to it (aggressive memory conservation is also set, but this doesn't help either, nor does turning it off help). This happens in unmodded MC 1.2.x all the time now on anything higher than Normal, and Optifine does absolutely nothing to help that. Neither HD A2 Smooth or Multi-core helps. I do get a framerate boost when using it, and chunks load faster, but that's about it.
Computer specs:
Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 (up-to-date)
Intel Core 2 Duo E4500
2GB DDR 2 333MHz (5-5-5-15)
Fujitsu-Siemens G31T-M2 (firmware up-to-date)
Geforce 8800 GT 1280MB (drivers up-to-date)
You are not the only one. Even if you limit Minecraft memory usage (F3 will always report MC using between 50 and 122) - REAL Minecraft memory usage will climb without end - it starts with a very minimum of 200MB and starts trashing my PC at 1200MB+
Vanilla W7, latest drivers, etc, etc.
Yes I played with all the RAM limiting java switched (which WORKED before).
I'm getting the same thing as the guy above as soon as Minecraft Forge is installed.
This is constantly repeated in the console:
...
java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: java.lang.ClassCastException@2397864a
at sun.reflect.GeneratedMethodAccessor16.invoke(Unknown Source)
The bug is fixed and it will work correctly in the next version.

I cam currently running battlegear, reiminimap, kingpins wildlife, atmos mobs, better dungeons, craftguide, mocreatures, doggytalents, Magicats, laser mod, fossil mod, mypeople, minecraft comes alive, pams harvestcraft, thaumcraft 2 and new dungeons. I have tried the standard optifine, the multi core optifine, and the smooth optifine and all have resulted in a memory climb and eventual crash. Standing still with f3 on I can literally watch it work its way up.
I removed optifine as a test and using vanilla graphics with all of the previous mods loaded and after a half hour have not had a memory climb yet.
I am unsure how to use MCPatcher with magic launcher and have always been a fan of optifine anyways, so I will wait to see if things improve and just stick with vanilla graphics for now.

If the F3 screen shows the same memory usage and the memory usage reported by Windows climbs up permanently then this is a native memory leak. It can be caused by a lot of things like: OpenGL drivers, problematic java version (32bit java on 64bit windows), minecraft constantly allocating graphics memory, etc.
If this happens with vanilla minecraft, then I would recommend upgrading/downgrading the graphics drivers or trying other Java versions (32bit/64bit).

Does vanilla + OptiFine have the memory problem?
With 10+ different mods installed anything is possible.
Also posting the error log helps.

Anyone else reporting problems with latest java 32 and latest/pre-latest NV drivers?

The thing is, that solution DOES work. At least, for most people. The NVIDIA "Threaded Optimization" setting causes many different kinds of problems for many different games.
The Multi-Core edition works fine for me. At least, if I disable that setting. So, you obviously have some additional problem. But, that doesn't automatically rule out any problems you would ALSO have if you kept that setting enabled.
If you want to try and find out the additional problem you have, you need to provide a LOT more information.
Also, I suggest you do a registry clean using the program called CCleaner since you probably also have some old registry entries that could also be causing you problems. It's free and the only program I truly trust for cleaning the registry etc.
I recommend everyone running Windows run CCleaner and regularly do a registry clean with it. Again, it's free and the only program I truly trust for cleaning the registry etc.
Disregard my post from a couple days ago. I'm having an issue with Minecraft since installing Optifine. First, when I break blocks on the ground, they occasionally have the wrong textures for a split second. I noticed that track looked like spider webs, and ground blocks look like lava. I am at a loss as to why this is happening.
More seriously though, I just now encountered a massive, nearly game halting situation. I was merely placing track on grass trying to get to a stronghold and suddenly I was looking through the floor at a massive blue void that seemed to be an entire chunk, all the way down, with below cave systems mapped out. But the main issue was, my FPS dropped to about 1, with me nearly unable to do anything. The problem didn't go away after saving and quitting, it only faded after I destroyed the track I placed, which made the underground areas disappear and the normal terrain return.
However, the FPS was still quite awful, and I was forced to slowly run away from the area. I'm using Optifine with Magic Launcher, Mod Loader, a few small mods like shelf, villageinfo, deathchest, more stackables and SPC, and more major ones like Clay Soldiers, Doggy Talents, and Rei's Minimap.
I've been using all of these mods for a while and only just switched to Optifine, so I'm inclined to believe it's the latter mod. When I first loaded up MC with Optifine I had the flickering textures problem that I was able to fix by turning the threading setting off and VSync on, and it's been more or less gravy since, until now. Does anyone have any insight into this? I'm using a 32x texture pack, running in fullscreen, latest java 7, My PC is not fantastic but above MC's specs, render mode is normal, and using Fast graphics. Not sure what else to include as far as information. Anyway, thanks for reading. I hope someone has some insight into this. :/
1.7.10 is total cake , nocakeing any caked recipe work , tried to make el steel now furnace kick coal out , srsly all mods that was upraded to 1.7.10 is stink cake
just delete this caking mod and install 1.6.4 they work at least or make your own mod without caking yourself all day and night because there is some caked recipe that dont caked work

I installed the Multi-threaded one since I have a quad-core CPU, but there's no AF/AA options.
Am I to assume that each one is indeed a different version and not simply an add-on for the main mod? How could I get multi-threading AND AF/AA?

Keep up the great work!
It's the connected textures for the vanilla texture pack. So yeah, unless you're using a texture pack that comes with one.

Yes, and the higher resolution the texture pack - the quicker is blow away.
