“  The Vaults Are Open  ”

This is a cross-over product based on the Fallout series, a media franchise of post-apocalyptic role-playing video games and later action role-playing games created by Tim Cain from Interplay Entertainment, published by Bethesda Softworks (BSW). The series' first title, Fallout, was released in 1997. The release of the Fallout set coincides with the start of a television adaptation of the game.

The four preconstructed Commander decks take players to a post-nuclear alternate reality. Each represents one of the wastelands and its many colorful factions.[5][6]

Storyline[ | ]

Magic Pip-Boy

The Pip-Boy, a wearable computer manufactured by RobCo Industries, that is standard equipment for each Vault Dweller. "Pip" is an acronym for "Personal Information Processor".

The series is set during the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd centuries, and its atompunk retrofuturistic setting and artwork are influenced by the post-war culture of 1950s United States, with its combination of hope for the promises of technology and the lurking fear of nuclear annihilation.

In the years after the Great War, the United States devolved into a post-apocalyptic environment commonly dubbed "the Wasteland". The Great War and subsequent nuclear Armageddon had severely depopulated the country, leaving large expanses of property decaying from neglect. In addition, virtually all food and water are irradiated and most lifeforms have mutated due to high radiation combined with mutagens of varied origins. Despite the large-scale devastation, some areas were fortunate enough to survive the nuclear apocalypse relatively unscathed, even possessing non-irradiated water, flora, and fauna. However, these areas are exceedingly rare. With a large portion of the country's infrastructure in ruins, necessities are scarce. Barter is the common method of exchange, with Nuka-Cola bottle caps providing a more conventional form of currency. Most cities and towns are empty, having been looted or deserted in favor of smaller, makeshift communities scattered around the Wasteland. The Vaults are survival shelters designed by the Vault-Tec Corporation to supposedly protect a selected fragment of the United States population. However, the main purpose of the Vaults is to experiment on the American population to conduct scientific research.

Gangs of bloodthirsty raiders, tyrant super mutants, irradiated monsters, and deadly robots roam the Wasteland. Humanity has formed several factions that are striving for survival. From those locked away in the pre-war vaults to new groups looking to rebuild society anew.

Themes and mechanics[ | ]

Junk token

This set sees the return of Energy, Proliferate and Squad.[10] Fallout introduces the Radiation mechanic that triggers at players pre-combat main phase if they have any rad counter on them. Upon triggering, a player must mill a card for each rad counter they have, then for each nonland card milled this way they lose 1 life and remove a rad counter.[10]

The Vaults in the game are represented by Sagas. Several older mechanics have cameos on new cards: Battalion, Enrage, Exploit, Fortify, Morbid, Raid, Shroud and Split second.

Card types[ | ]

Fallout introduces the artifact subtypes Bobblehead and Junk. Junk is a predefined token with "{T}, Sacrifice this artifact: Exile the top card of your library. You may play that card this turn. Activate only as a sorcery."[10] The set also introduces the Sloth and Synth creature types.

The set features the first Fortification artifact type since Darksteel Garrison from Future Sight.

Counter types[ | ]

The set introduces the Rad counter as part of the new Radiation mechanic. It also introduces Brain counters.

Trivia[ | ]

  • The Fallout universe contains a parody of Magic: the Gathering called Tragic the Garnering that players of are hopelessly addicted to.
  • The "Vault Dweller" Basic lands show the arc of a Fallout character from the start of the game to the end.[3]
  • The flavor text of Nuclear Fallout slightly misquotes the Fallout 2 opening narration ("The end of the world occurred pretty much as we had predicted").
