“  Tiny Tails, Big Adventure!  ”
Bloomburrow key art

Bloomburrow key art

Bloomburrow is set on the plane of Bloomburrow, a world of cute anthropomorphic animals with no humans in it. This world is full of squirrels, frogs, mice, and rabbits, showing that even the smallest creatures can have a big impact. The animals have an advanced culture and are the main characters of the set. They wear clothing, talk, and wield magic. Unlike humanoid "animal people" on other planes (i.e. leonin, loxodons, aven, rhoxes, nezumi, and such), the animalfolk of Bloomburrow are the size of regular animals of their species. Much like Segovia, foreign Planeswalkers are changed when 'walking to here; in Bloomburrow's case, human Planeswalkers are transformed into anthropomorphic animals like the local races while here. It's unknown if traveling here by Omenpath will transform oneself, or if only humans are affected.

Bloomburrow contains 281 regular cards (81 commons, 100 uncommons, 60 rares, 20 mythic rares, 20 basic lands), and includes randomly inserted traditional foil versions of all cards. The regular cards include 20 full-art "Seasonal" basic lands (#262-281). All five basic lands get all four seasonal treatments, though some seasons are more commonly found in boosters than others (Spring 40%, Summer 30%, Autumn 20%, and Winter 10%).[4] Alternate card frames have a different numbers than the original version as follows:

Templating changes[ | ]

Starting with this set, the phrase Enters the battlefield is shortened to "Enters".[3][5] The main phases are now referred to as the "first main phase" and "second main phase" rather than the "precombat main phase" and the "postcombat main phase" respectively.[6]

Storyline[ | ]

Bloomburrow is the first set in the Dragonstorm Arc. A ragtag team of anthropomorphic adventurers must band together to go on an important quest to save the realm from elemental calamity beasts and the Great-Night Owl.[7][8] Glarb, the King of Frogfolk and a powerful wizard, is said to have insights about the calamity beasts. It is now up to Mabel and her colorful companions Gev, Hugs, Finneas, and Zoraline to redeem their world.

This set features Story Spotlights.

Themes and mechanics[ | ]

Bloomburrow is a set that represents forest critters, combining old mechanics and support for new Typals. Each Limited color pair represents a dedicated creature type.[8][15][16][17][18]

Offspring is a new mechanic that can double up on a creature when casting it. When you cast a creature spell and pay its additional offspring cost, you create a 1/1 copy of it. The creature's stats may not be very impactful, but its abilities are still in full effect.[19] Each Offspring card has a matching token with unique art.[20]

Valiant is a tweaked variant of Heroic that works when the creature is targeted by abilities as well, but only the first time each turn.[21]

Forage is a keyword action corresponding to either exiling three cards from a graveyard or sacrificing a Food.

Expend is a rule term for counting how much mana has been spent to cast spells during the turn.

Gift is an extra cost mechanic that grants an extra benefit if you give certain advantages to the opponent, including card draw and {U} 1/1 Fish Tokens.

In addition, the set introduces the Pawprint symbol ({P}) that is used on the cycle of modal Season cards.

Storm appears as a cameo mechanic on Ral, Crackling Wit's ultimate loyalty ability.

Threshold returns as a limited archetype for Rats ({U}{B}).

Flashback, Landfall, and Hybrid Mana also return as deciduous mechanics.

Changeling makes an appearance as well, as is common for typal-focused sets, but just on two artifact creatures.

Card types[ | ]

Featured Creature types include woodland creatures, with a focus on Bats, Birds, Frogs, Lizards, Mice, Otters, Rabbits, Raccoons, Rats, and Squirrels as the 10 Typals that make up the draft archetypes.[20] Other woodland creatures include Badgers, Hamsters, Moles, and Possum. Bloomburrow introduces the Skunk and Weasel creature types. Shapeshifters appear as animated wooden constructs. Fish are used as currency, notably as Gifts.

The Elemental Calamity Beasts appear as Bears, Birds, Boars, Cats, Coyotes, Crabs, Elks, Fishes, Insects, Snakes, Turtles, Wolverines and Wolves. Notably only Birds appear as woodland creatures and as Calamity Beasts.

The Enchantment type Class returns from Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms and is introduced into a Magic setting for the first time. It now focuses on innkeepers, blacksmiths, artists, and other villagers.[20]

The Artifact types Food and Treasure return, mainly as Predefined tokens. The push for Food Tokens to be used more proactively than their use in Throne of Eldraine continues as they are a part of the Squirrel's draft archetype ({B}{G}), mainly as a resource for the Forage mechanic.

With the notable story-relevant exception of Dragonhawk, Fate's Tempest – which appears to be the only Dragon on the plane – no other iconic or characteristic creature types of any color are present. Even card effects which typically revive creatures as Zombies, do not grant the creature type in this set.

Counters[ | ]

The set introduces Blight counters and Supply counters.

Limited archetypes[ | ]

Bloomburrow has a typal theme.[15][22][20] Each color pair is associated with one creature type, with a particular strategy associated:[23][24][25][26][27]

Bloomburrow features the following cycles:
