Nellis Air Force Base[]

Ok, I just wanted to let you know, I`ve finished the updates on Nellis medical station, Nellis schoolhouse, Nellis workshop and Loyal's house as you asked. Any way, if I can be of any further assistance please let me know. ivc392 12:04, February 1, 2011 (UTC)

Hey, thank you for uploading the images. How are you taking these screenshots? Are you on a PC?

For example:

240px-Jacobstown_Lodge.jpg

I believe that is way higher than you can climb. How did you get so high?

--1deadmeat1 03:30, November 12, 2010 (UTC)

I too would like to know how you get so high. -Maddogg408 19:49, December 31, 2010 (UTC)

I believ you used the console commands TFC (Toggle Free Camera) or TCL (Toggle Colission) and TM (Toggle Hud), correct? 96.50.198.233 04:04, February 24, 2011 (UTC)

Image method[]

Hey Jan, sorry this took a while, I put this in my talk page by mistake first :P
What I'm doing right now is I've got the FNV GECK program and am rooting through it for items that need proper images. Once I find one I want to do, I bring up the preview, set the background to pure blue, remove the ground and take a screenshot with Alt+PrntScrn.
Then I paste that screenshot into photoshop, crop it, Go to Select -> Color Range -> Select the blue color -> Set Fuzziness to 0, hit ok and then hit delete, then the background is gone (usually, sometimes hair and semitransparent items need more work). Then I simply either resize the image or leave it as is and save as PNG with transparency.
More than a few times I've had white outlines show up from Wikia failing to resize the images properly, even identical images sometimes get different treatment, so then I simply resize the image to the infobox width, which is 250px so wikia doesn't need to resize anything.
Good luck! --DvS 22:02, November 12, 2010 (UTC)
Using Select -> Color Range allows you to select a part of the image according to color, which you can see is very useful if we use a pure blue (0 red, 0 green, 255 blue) for the background color in the GECK. The fuzziness setting just says how liberal photoshop can be with selecting the color, and in most cases a setting of 0 works best. Just to clarify again, after you go to Color Range, you have to manually click a part of the image containing the color you want to select, so you would click on the blue part of the image you just pasted into photoshop.
A way to make images less dark is when you've made it transparent, go to Image -> Auto Contrast, and photoshop will do it's best to automatically tune the colors for you.
I left something out of the previous message, and that is you should make sure that the preview window is as large as possible before you take the screenshot, since that gives you the highest quality possible. --DvS 23:40, November 12, 2010 (UTC)

Vault 34 Overseer[]

A little trick I like to use for filling in missing infoboxes such as what you ran across on Vault 34 overseer: I open the Talk page in a new browser tab, assuming it hasn't yet been created, and then click the proper page creation template that I need. I then copy what I need and paste it into the article, and fill it in with info from the GECK. In the case of the Vault 34 Overseer page, I used this trick with two different page creation templates to get the character infobox and the creature stats box. Then, I closed the talk page tab without saving it. --Kris User Hola 15:32, November 17, 2010 (UTC)

Hey, Jspoel. I like that your uploading a lot of images for pages, but can you categorize your images, please. It's just so myself and the other admins don't have to go categorize them ourselves, and it will save us a time keeping the wiki together. Shadowrunner56 20:25, November 23, 2010 (UTC)

Look at the recent images you uploaded to get an idea on what to put when categorizing, but I'll give you some examples of categories. Also you have to edit the image to put a category in.

If you have a location image you put Category:Fallout: New Vegas location images If you have loc, like you've been uploading, you put Category:Fallout: New Vegas map marker images If it's a weapon image you put Category:Fallout: New Vegas weapon images a consumable Category:Fallout: New Vegas consumable images a creature Category:Fallout: New Vegas creature images.

All of those need a "[[]]" around them to be counted as a category.

Shadowrunner56 23:37, November 23, 2010 (UTC)

Image categories[]

Image categories are for images only, not articles. Please refrain from adding articles to image categories. Thanks. --Kris User Hola 10:12, November 24, 2010 (UTC)

Go to the image page - see your contributions if you uploaded it - and click the Edit link near the top. There's text data associated with each image uploaded to the wiki, and this is where you edit it. Just put the category and licensing information in there. --Kris User Hola 10:48, November 24, 2010 (UTC)

Hello my friend and thank for you ;)

Personally, for go faster, I copy the licensing an old image, same game or a similar game in my new image. For exemple, for the loc image, I search a image with the same function, like http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/File:Megaton_loc.jpg

In another tab, I upload my image, after I click in " edit " located at the top of the page beside " file " and " talk ". I do the same for the Megaton image, I copy all, I paste all in my image and I change " Category:Fallout 3 map marker images " on " Category:Fallout: New Vegas map marker images " and voila ;) ( not easy to explain this kind of thing in English). It works for everything and this is much faster (for me anyway).

For the GECK image, yes almost just the GECK, I put what I want in the preview window and then I take a print screen. After, I put it on Photoshop and I make a transparent background and that's it =).

Good evening my friend and please come back to me about some point give considerable insight, not sure all this is understandable. Itachou [~talk~] 17:46, November 24, 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome my friend and yes, I'm French =).
Yes, it's a good technique, like I say, I done the same for all, a character image with the licensing of another character image etc. I think it goes much faster, and it is sure to make no mistake. Delighted to have helped you and feel free to send me a message if you have another problem somewhere, nice day and see you soon ! Itachou [~talk~] 14:34, November 25, 2010 (UTC)

The Strip North Gate redirect[]

No idea. Ask User:GhostAvatar, he's the one that did it. I reverted the change, since it's clearly wrong. --Kris User Hola 23:09, November 25, 2010 (UTC)

It was because the original page content was made with a single word "nugget". So I replaced it with a blank locations template and left it for over a week. Where it remained and still remains a orphaned page with nothing linking to it. Since no one had edited it or linked to it, I did a quick search instead of full proper one (But this was at the time, spam pages where popping up every few hours) and found nothing listing it, not even in the Fallout: New Vegas locations list or the Fallout: New Vegas map list. So I redirected it to the nearest named location, now that I have bothered to boot up New Vegas and double checked. It seems that location has been mis-named over the rest of the Wiki and needs correcting or adding to each page that requires it. ☣Avatar☣ 21:36, November 26, 2010 (UTC)

Rollback rights[]

As a trusted user, I've given you rollback rights, which allow you to revert vandalism more easily. Ausir(talk) 17:46, November 26, 2010 (UTC)

Nominating for deletion[]

Don't use on pages. Use delete instead. --Kris User Hola 19:16, November 26, 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, use the template on everything you want to be deleted; the category is not supposed to be added independently of the template. --Kris User Hola 20:23, November 26, 2010 (UTC)
Being simply unused is not reason enough to nominate an image for deletion. Sometimes they are unused because someone removed them from a page even though they should be used there. For example, this image: File:Endurance.jpg was removed from the page for some reason, even though it should definitely stay there. Same for this one: File:Kamikaze robot.jpg where it's enough to enter "Kamikaze robot" in search to see that there is an article where it should be added. And there's no reason why the collector's edition cards like File:Majorine_Card_FNV.jpg shouldn't be put on their respective character's pages. Ausir(talk) 14:56, December 5, 2010 (UTC)
Actually, I wouldn't add delete to any pages just because they are unused. Any unused images can be found simply via Special:UnusedFiles, so I don't see much point in additionaly marking them for deletion. Please only mark images that e.g. are redundant or of bad quality, with redundancy or quality as the cause, not them being unused. Ausir(talk) 20:57, December 5, 2010 (UTC)
Well, unused off-topic images (like ones uploaded for user pages) can be marked for deletion just because they are unused in my opinion. -- Porter21 (talk) 21:00, December 5, 2010 (UTC)
Yes, of course, but not any actual game images. These I think should be nominated for deletion only if they are redundant, with a link to the replacement image or relevant article. Ausir(talk) 21:02, December 5, 2010 (UTC)

You'll notice that the Endurance image actually isn't the same as the one in the infobox. The one you marked for deletion is from Fallout 1 and 2, the one now on the page is probably from Fallout Tactics. While it's of low quality, it should still be there.

Also, some e.g. location images are not used now, but could just as well be re-added to the location pages, even if there's a better image in the infobox, if only they don't show the exact same part of the location as the infobox image. As for cards, I think a separate category would be a good idea. And anyone can create category, just like you would create an article. You just need to add its superior categories, e.g. "Fallout: New Vegas quests", "Fallout: New Vegas images" and "Quest images".

As for headgear category, I'm not sure if we need it. I think leaving the images in the armor images category is fine. As for Fallout 3 map markers - sure, why not. As for userpage images, ones that are used and properly categorized should be left alone, but unused ones can be marked for deletion. Ausir(talk) 22:32, December 5, 2010 (UTC)

Again, please don't give just "not linked to a page" as reason for deletion, unless it's a userpage image, but be more specific - e.g. state that it's redundant, like in the case of the "April Mortimer" image. Ausir(talk) 01:14, December 6, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. It might take more time to nominate for deletion, but it will save time spent on checking whether it should be deleted or not. Ausir(talk) 01:19, December 6, 2010 (UTC)

Categorizing[]

I thought I got all the perk images cat done? The only ones I should have left to do is the weapons with mods images I have uploaded (I prefer to do things like that in big batches so I can just copy and paste, easy enough to find them with Special:UncategorizedFiles). As for the weapons, they should already be in cats as all I did was updated already existing images with higher res pictures.

As for making them, I simply decompiled the data files and then edited the originals in the game with photoshop.

☣Avatar☣ 22:38, November 29, 2010 (UTC)

Well I have just gone through the images that needed the cat tags and I did miss about 14, which aint to bad considering I uploaded over 100 of them in the end.
As for decompiling the files, well basically the main game data file is like a giant zip file, holding all the images for the pipboy along with the game meshes effects etc. But you cant use any program to unzip them, I use FO3 Archive Utility which was designed for this very task (http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34). Once you have done that you will have the actual game image files similar to a normal picture but in .DDS format, to be able to open them in Photoshop you need to have the nvidia dds plugin (http://developer.nvidia.com/object/photoshop_dds_plugins.html). Now you can edit the image and save it to any normal image format you want.
For editing the image just check here as they also asked the same thing 1
☣Avatar☣ 23:03, November 29, 2010 (UTC)
That's not "decompiling" - that's extracting. WHen you use the wrong words you confuse people lol --Kris User Hola 23:05, November 29, 2010 (UTC)
A decompiler is the name given to a computer program that performs the reverse operation to that of a compiler.
[2]
[3]
Extracting is a very broad term used for general purpose and cover are large area of subjects, decompile is the correct term in this case. ☣Avatar☣ 02:25, December 20, 2010 (UTC)

Jay Barnes[]

Why did you change the article to say that Jay Barnes is only there with the Wild Wasteland trait? It was right to begin with, he's there only WITHOUT the trait; with the trait, Crusoe replaces him. --Kris User Hola 16:15, November 30, 2010 (UTC)

Must be a bug of some sort, Crusoe is supposed to be there instead of Jay Barnes. Double-check your character's traits. --Kris User Hola 16:48, November 30, 2010 (UTC)
Another thought occurs to me - maybe Crusoe also appears, elsewhere in the Ultra-Luxe. Look around and see if you can find him. --Kris User Hola 17:20, November 30, 2010 (UTC)
I doublechecked and fixed the formIDs for both NPCs. I also found out what's going on with the WW trait. See Talk:Jay Barnes for that info. I think I'm gonna C/P it to Talk:Crusoe too. --Kris User Hola 19:03, November 30, 2010 (UTC)

Are you using Photoshop, if so I can give you some tips to actually make the pictures slightly better, mainly getting rid of the jagged edges on items when removing the background from the Geck. ☣Avatar☣ 23:40, December 3, 2010 (UTC)

If they came out as .nif files its because you extracted the meshes.bsa. You need to extract the textures.bsa file to get the .dds texture files, once you have those you will be able to use them in photoshop with that plugin as long as you have the plugin in the photoshop plugin folder. Also cus nVidia only released a 32 bit plugin you have to have it in the the 32 bit version of Photoshop (if you have a 64 bit system, it will be in the programme folders x86 folder) and use the 32 bit version of photoshop.
As for the images from the Geck, the larger you make the preview screen before taking a screen shot the better the main detail will be, one of the reasons I can take decent images is cus I have dual monitors I can stretch the preview over. But with that said you can still take decent shots with a single monitor, just make the preview as large as the screen you have. The rest of the image improvements comes into play when using Photoshop. This is the process I follow and does not take long at all to get decent shots, first I hit shift+printscreen to take the shot, then switching over to photoshop hit ctrl+n followed by ctrl+v to paste the screen shot. After that I hit C to use the crop tool to select the area with just the item and crop all the surrounding image out and then hit enter. The hit M to use the magicwand and click on a part of the grey background (has to be grey to get the best results, done use extremes like pink, blue etc) making sure the tolerance is set to 0 so it only selects the grey, then right click and select similar to make sure it gets all the grey. Now at the top of the screen you should have a button that says refine edges, set smooth to 2 to smooth out the jagged edges of the item and then delete to get rid of the background. Now to sort out the light levels you have to deselect the area you just deleted and hit ctrl+L to bring up the levels, now you will have a box with a graph of the light levels. At the bottom of the graph you will have 3 arrows - 1 white, 1 grey and 1 black, click on the middle grey arrow and move it to the left to bring up the mid-tone light levels (play around until you get the best image). Hit enter and then save the image as a .PNG and you are all done.
Sorry if some of that may have sounded a bit noobish, but I dont know how well you know Photoshop but I have found that this way gives the best results. ☣Avatar☣ 01:20, December 4, 2010 (UTC)
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.
Ohhh one other thing I forgot to add, is try take the preview image from the mesh and not the actual item, as these tend to be of a lot higher resolution as well. Take weapons for example, the items exist under items>weapons. But a lot of the high-res meshes are kept separate in world objects>static>weapons. ☣Avatar☣ 01:29, December 4, 2010 (UTC)
Yeah the white glove image is a harder one to do because of the yellow haze from the background lighting, personally i would have used the white gloves poster instead of the sign.
For the pipboy icons its really simple once you know how, but it is the knowing how that is the hard part. Once you have loaded up your icon.dds file you paint the whole thing black (I know this seems weird, but thats cus you will be using the hidden layer to do the work) this get rid of most defects in the image. Now you need to select the alpha channel, to do this in the bottom right you will have the layers, next to the layers tab is a channel tab. Click on that and you should see a few channels labeled RGB, R, G, B and Alpha. To select it hold down ctrl and click the alpha channel. You dont want it visible, just selected. Now paint the whole selection with white to bring out the hidden image. Now that is done you need to add the selection of RGB as well, hold ctrl+shift and click on the RGB channel. Now to get the black boarder simply goto the menu across the top and use select > modify > expand and set it to 2. Now to transfer it over hit ctrl+c and then ctrl+n to make a new area to work in, then hit ctrl+v to paste the selection in. If the white is a bit dull hit ctrl+shift+l to bring up the white levels. Now just remove the background and save as a .png, now you should be all done. ☣Avatar☣ 16:35, December 4, 2010 (UTC)

Model Images[]

Hey man, saw the image you did of the Great Khan armor. Great work. Could i ask if you could do one of Prime Legionary armor? If you can cool, if not its ok.Lichlord08 22:02, December 4, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, it's a great model. Question, do the super mutants in new vegas(regular ones) look different than the ones in Fallout 3? I now that the ones in vegas are from the Master's Army, but are the model's different? could you post a few. Thanks again for the model of the prime. :)Lichlord08 22:36, December 4, 2010 (UTC)

I had meant the full armor, not an armorer. Still, great image, just what i wanted to see. I usually ask Itachou for the images, but he hasn't had the time to post anything lately. I play the game mostly on Xbox and unfortunately i won't be able to get New Vegas until Christmas. thanks again.Lichlord08 22:49, December 4, 2010 (UTC)

Do you mind if i request one more image? a veteran decanus? Thanks in advance.Lichlord08 12:15, December 5, 2010 (UTC)

Oh, i meant a model image like the prime legionary. good shot though. could you post a model image of it please? Lichlord08 16:35, December 5, 2010 (UTC)

Not sure if you read the message or not, but could you post a model image like the prime legionary or the cowboy outfit of the Veteran decanus please. the head shot is good but it's the model images i'm looking for. thanks in advance.Lichlord08 23:57, December 5, 2010 (UTC)

Ah, i see. thanks any way for looking.

The "In-game BubbleCam" & Other Stereoscopic Adventures[]

Hoi! I'm very new here and was looking to join a project. The Vault:File maintenance project caught my interest, improving NPC images. The Project Lead has been officially inactive for awhile, and the project members have been very briefly inactive. I was directed to you by Porter 21 (can't link, I'm working on learning the text coding here) who said some of your recent activities likely fall within the area of this mostly inactive project. Said Porter suggested I find out if you would be interested in 'dusting off' this project and getting it's wheels running again. I'm interested in overhauling images for articles here, NPCs in the games I already run on this machine seemed a convenient starting point. I've not much else to add, but I'll reference the action so far:

File Maintenance Project[]

Sure, fine with me :) Phoenix has been inactive for quite a while unfortunately, and the project would certainly benefit from enthusiastic contributors. -- Porter21 (talk) 23:23, December 7, 2010 (UTC)

You don't really have to worry about file sizes - we have no limits on disk space usage, and the wiki software automatically creates thumbnails for displaying images in articles :) Otherwise, the instructions you posted look fine to me.
Regarding the descriptions, I think ph03n1x meant something like this. Personally, I'd consider that to be optional rather than mandatory - checking the images, license and category seems like enough work to me ;) -- Porter21 (talk) 15:27, December 9, 2010 (UTC)

I'm happy! Officially a project member with the green light! As I said, however I'm VERY new. This is what I am checked out on: console cmmds: tcl, tfc, tm. 'sucsm XX' I haven't used yet but should be able to master in a snap. 'fov XX' is one I might need some help with, but will experiment. 'tlb' seems to me perhaps of limited value, wouldn't carefully adjusted 'natural' in-game lighting be preferable? And not crime-scene-like contrast blast? Here's what I don't know, if you can fill me in- you are project lead, and I could use some judicial discretion- What format? I can do any, .PNG, .jpg seem the most common here. What res? I think my card can handle full-max out quality if I tweak it, running pretty high as is. What final specifications should the images fit to before uploading, and how do you prefer they be processed into the smaller size, resolution, and new ratio? And last, what of your 'proprietary method' you've used would you care to share? I'm a fairly proficient photographer, so I think I have the 'taking of' part covered but the technical stuff exclusive to capturing in-engine snapshots I'm completely new and clueless on. - Congratulations on your newest project stripes, I look forward to working under you and learning. Feel free to correct or fine tune anything I'm doing, I take leadership hierarchy seriously, & the briefest of glances at just your talk page show you to be more than qualified for this project. Thank you for investing yourself of it and giving me a chance. Happy capturing! Pu239AndYou

 • The only source I'm running currently is FO3. I can see about acquiring more on my current desktop, or we may find a contributor with them. I always set resolution using Fallout Launcher, for this project I was planning on using ULTRA settings (everything maxed) and my native max resolution of 1400x900. I always launch using F.O.M.M., a Nexus utility. It helps me double check between FO3, the DLCs GECK work of mine and various mods is being launched. Obviously for work here at The Vault, on main game characters, every assurance should be taken to ensure fully organic(original) content. I hadn't used the TLB command when I mailed you last; I used it later that evening and it was immediately apparent it was a full illumination-all directions-diffused setting that destroyed absolutely all trace of native dynamic lighting. Due to the shock of the appearance I don't think I'll be using it even to navigate dark spaces. I understand fov is useless for this, I thought it might be. I'm less clear on tfc- more about that in a moment. I'm still working out the kinks in the full method of extracting captures, I seem to be all ready with everything needed to take and submit here at the vault, except for exactly how to capture. I don't have a program to do it, I was thinking the prt scrn|sys rq button or a special button combo of it might be the way, but I wasn't sure if that would work under blackscreen game launch conditions. How to 'snap' the picture is something I'm going to need to figure out, obviously. I currently use Photoshop 7, and am very proficient with it. Every project starts as a .PNG as default, which I feel Photoshop can modify without flaws easier than .jpg. I was planning on dropping in my captures of the quality listed above, and then resizing a 14x10 ratio colored rectangle over the desired 'cropped' part of the capture, using it to select that portion, and then cropping it to that shape before resizing it to the EXACT size the character info boxes display, then saving it to maximum quality .jpg before uploading, I figured the special abilities .PNG format possesses would be useless for 'flat' images like character portrait shots, I just wanted to be sure. I was going to resize using Photoshop, not the Wikia uploader to prevent quality drop and unexpected bugs from the wikia uploader. Apparently Porter 21 will let us now what type images The Vault needs; I will take ultimate discretion from you the project lead. One more thing I have yet to figure out: I'm hobby experienced with images, graphic art and photography, but I've never 'used' an image in a legal sense; so licenses were never an issue. I know wikias are able to secure licensing but I don't have clue 1 about how it works. --As I was going to say above, I would think the tfc free camera and tfc 1 frozen time variant would be crucial for capturing the 'right moment' on-screen. I thought a free-roam portrait of the character with landmarks of their location behind them would be perfect for npc bios, as you first see them from afar in-game, so using forced perspective (hence tfc, and prid xxxx moveto) to get them up close and in detail with the location behind them would show what they look like in game, not just nose to nose. I understand your directions for radially locating yourself around the subject for best sun exposure, using the conversation option to turn them to face you, and the special camera lock on-face and zoom mode when a conversation starts, and tm makes sense to remove the conversation pop up interface. I thought that sort of image, the closeup face-shot showed only a character from the shoulders up, confirmed by your message directions, and wouldn't show anything of the characters overall appearance, behavior, exact location or habits. I had been planning, while obviously to get a close up and good shot of the character's face, to 'shoot' them as they were in their setting and not locked-on in a conversation. If that's the way it's supposed to be done, I have no problem with that but may I upload some trial free-perspective shots to see if they are suitable as well? Again, sorry my writing isn't more concise.

Irritatie[]

Beste J.Spoelstra;

Images[]

You just have to double click the model and access there inventory tab, once there you can add, remove or change items. Note that changes are not live in the preview panel, once you have made the changes click OK and then open (or close and then re-open if you already have it open) the preview panel. Now you should have the required model with the required items. In the case of the Veteran Decanus they dont actually have items, seems like they are indirectly connected to the Armour via another object, hence why they appear naked.

But yeah I did those on request for Lichlord, as for Boone I just came across the tags and updated the pictures by changing his clothes. ☣Avatar☣ 22:53, December 9, 2010 (UTC)

GECK <--> GAME[]

Groet

Location maps[]

Well, I'm planning to provide better mapping tools for the wiki, which will likely make all the individual marker images superfluous. The idea is to integrate them with our overall world map, and have orientation points appear on the individual marker maps as they are added to the world map, all without requiring the user to take any images. So, your efforts might be better spent elsewhere :)

Regarding followed pages, I'm afraid I can't help you there directly - admins can't edit the watchlist of users. What you could try, however, is going to Special:Watchlist (basically the more functional version of Special:FollowedPages) and remove the pages via the "View and edit watchlist" or "Edit raw watchlist" links at the top of that page. -- Porter21 (talk) 08:03, December 11, 2010 (UTC)

Deleting the images requires about the same amount of time it takes for you to tag them - I guess no admin has yet found the time to do it ;) I'll take a look today though. -- Porter21 (talk) 13:33, December 13, 2010 (UTC)

Crumpled note[]

Did you actually find that somewhere? Because if not, it's just legacy content from F3; that note was in the Brass Lantern. Nitty Tok. 03:08, December 14, 2010 (UTC)

Mass deleting files[]

I'm not saying we should forget about them, just saying that I think it's better to move them to a subcategory because articles for deletion are more of a priority. They should still be dealt with. And I think a lot of the unlinked images should be moved to articles, like e.g. the ones I added to the Gallery section in Red Rock Canyon. A lot of our location etc. images could use more than just one image per page, like they often do have now. Ausir(talk) 14:37, December 15, 2010 (UTC)

Picture Please[]

Hello Fellow Vault Dweller! I am a user on multiple Wikis and including this one. I love your pictures and I was wondering if you could do me a huge favor about pictures. I was wondering if you could take three pictures of James (Caucasian). The three pictures are when he is younger, in Baby Steps, older in either Growing Up Fast or Future Imperfect, and the oldest one during The Waters of Life. Can you please do these three, please? I will be so thankful. Fellow Vault Member, --Gearslover01 15:46, December 15, 2010 (UTC)

I was close...[]

If it hadn't been the image category for an add-on, you'd have hit the mark completely :) Don't worry, most people fare far worse with their first attempts at categorization.

As for why I added the pipe (|) bits - it's mostly aesthetics. For categories, pipes are used to alter the default sorting of the current page in that category. For example, means that the page will be displayed under "I" (as in "Images") on Category:Dead Money characters.

I usually do this because in game-specific categories, all subcategories usually start with the same letter, so by default they'd all be listed under that letter. For example, see Category:Fallout: New Vegas - the subcategories which are listed under letters other than "F" are ones which have had their sorting changed with a piped term; the others use the default sorting (i.e. their name). It just makes it easier to find subcategories - you just have to look under "I" to find the "images" category, instead of having to look through a long list of items listed under "F".

I hope that was somewhat understandable ;) -- Porter21 (talk) 19:25, December 17, 2010 (UTC)

BoS ranks[]

The BoS ranks as depicted in the image apply to the Midwestern Brotherhood, not to the BoS as a whole, so I'm reverting the edit. And the image was an inferior copy of the existing Ranks.JPG, so I'll delete it. Ausir(talk) 22:19, December 19, 2010 (UTC)

Marked locations[]

Locations marked on the map should be capitalised. Unmarked locations can be dcapitalised. Tezzla CannonUser Tezzla Dog 17:15, December 24, 2010 (UTC)

Locations[]

The thinking is that, since the locations are all proper nouns, they all get to be capitalized.

I'd leave them all capitalized anyway, because I'm strange like that and the policy for decaps is silly, but meh. Nitty Tok. 17:15, December 24, 2010 (UTC)

Not all locations are actually proper nouns - personally, I'd prefer only those that actually are to be capitalized, although in some cases it's a matter of interpretation. Ausir(talk) 22:22, December 27, 2010 (UTC)
As for races, I'm not a fan of how Fallout 3 (and now FNV) divides the "races" in the first place, but given that the division is there, I don't really mind it being added either. Ausir(talk) 04:58, December 28, 2010 (UTC)

Well, using images from the games on a wiki about the game in question is generally considered fair use. Forum: Infobox too wide[]

I would rather find a better way to fix, than using the px attribute on infobox images to fix the issue. The problem is for me when I looked at Papa Khan even before your edit, the interaction box was not being pushed down. This only leads me to the conclusion that it is a CSS issue, as different browser will deal in different manners with things like padding and margins that could be putting the width out by only a single pixel, but it is enough to push the interaction box down to below the infobox. I am going to revert your edit and then try looking at seeing if I can reproduce it for myself. ☣Avatar☣ 00:08, January 7, 2011 (UTC)

Can you please take a look at Papa Khan and Sergio and let me know if it is fixed for both of them. I think I have tracked the issue down to being IE and the clashing on the padding between the infobox and the interactions box. ☣Avatar☣ 00:39, January 7, 2011 (UTC)
I had to shave a bit more of the size of the interaction box, that should take care of Sergio as well now if you could try now and let me know if it works. ☣Avatar☣ 00:50, January 7, 2011 (UTC)
Yes it should cascade down to all NPC pages across the entire Wiki over time, if you see any that are still being bumped down just purge the page and that should resolve it. ☣Avatar☣ 00:59, January 7, 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I like the idea for the Cass' Outfit suggestion, but with the suggestion for the platinum chip, I believe "the" shouldn't be involved in the title. I understand that it is spelled that way in the G.E.C.K. (I play Fallout on my 360 so I don't have a G.E.C.K.) but the word "the" in the title is just a little strange. I think it's fine how it is. Thanks, just trying out a flow chart idea to give a better view of the variable options within a quest. And yes it takes a good amount of work to get the chart to work right hihi. As for the interaction box for NPC, that unfortunately was the trade off to make it fit for IE since it is ignoring the padding for the info box. When/if Porter is able to change the meta tags to IE to display as the correct document type, then it can be reversed back to full width. Best to wait and see what ideas Porter comes up with, but at the least it the small amount lost is the lesser of 2 evils. ☣Avatar☣ 23:55, January 11, 2011 (UTC)

No skiing for me, just old-fashioned Christmas with the family :) I understand why you selected those images (and you did select nice ones), I just figured a bit more variety would be more interesting for visitors.

Whether a project appoints a project leader or not is usually left for the project members to decide; some projects profit from having one, some simply don't need one. I guess it'd be best to ask the other project members what they think, although you might end up having to decide it yourself anyway if you're the only active member. FO3 paper notes[]

Yes, they should be removed. Where exactly are they? Are they just listed erroneously on the FNV paper notes overview page? Do they need deleting or does an overview list just need editing?--Gothemasticator 16:41, January 16, 2011 (UTC)

Oh, yeah, another copy/paste page setup for the new game that didn't remove legacy content. Yeah, it needs editing. If you're up for the task, it certainly would help. Cheers.--Gothemasticator 16:52, January 16, 2011 (UTC)
I don't think we should add the note transcripts to the quest pages. A summary of the note's contents in an appropriate place in the text, including a link to the note's article page would be better. E.g. "A note found on the desk states that Col. Jones wants to blow up the villa." Make sense?--Gothemasticator 17:55, January 16, 2011 (UTC)

A few requests[]

Those cards are not actually in game cards, they should by all rights be listed under Fallout: New Vegas promotional items#Fallout: New Vegas Playing Cards (Promotional), as they are scanned images of the card faces received with the collectors edition of the game for pre-orders. Its just one of the many many things that needs correcting in the mis. item lists *sigh*. It one of the many things that I have been meaning to get around to correcting along with the hash job on other sections like clothing, notes, holotapes etc. ohhh the enthusiasm of anons when a game is launched....

As for the mantis image, that is a easy one to correct, as the image was not replaced and still exists. I just changed all of them to a generic image to cut down on the 3 separate images being used when they all look the same (well except for the different pose you had for your one). I have added in to the gallery for you. I just hate the use of having separate images displaying essentially the same thing, as when one is updated, none of the others are.

And for the formal wear .... eckkkk, yeah thats needs a update, I have been trying to go through the armour and clothing. But each time I get started I tend to get stuck on something that takes a age to correct, just like the jumpsuits page did. ☣Avatar☣ 00:08, January 17, 2011 (UTC)

As for removing the FO3 key remnants, sure, that's fine. I'd put a section with a link to Fallout 3 keys at the end though and mention that all of these can be found in FNV's game files as well, just for completeness' sake :) -- Porter21 (talk) 19:08, January 17, 2011 (UTC)

Slideshows[]

Those slideshows are amazing! xD But i think there should be a slighty longer delay before the next picture is shown :). --KieranBOS 15:49, January 20, 2011 (UTC)

They should definitely be in every article with more than one image, it just looks neater, and also saves space, as you dont have all those images side by side and on top of eachother :) --KieranBOS 16:20, January 20, 2011 (UTC)

I agree that the slideshow is neat and appropriate for some pages. But we shouldn't just start replacing galleries with slideshows all across the wiki. For instance, the main Deathclaw article would really suffer from such a change. A good idea would be to start a forum discussion, preferably with a proposal from you regarding which types of pages and situations could benefit from a slideshow format. It would be great if the result were some sort of policy or standard by which editors could judge the appropriateness of slideshows versus galleries.--Gothemasticator 16:35, January 20, 2011 (UTC)
I'm not fond of slideshows myself - they require me to click through to the image I need. I prefer normal galleries. Ausir(talk) 00:31, January 21, 2011 (UTC)

Categories and appearances[]

I was unaware of the discussion you and Shadowrunner had. I was just going for consistency with FO3 categorization. And, since the overview page has items from both FO3 and FNV, I think consistency in categorization is worth it.

As to the "appearances" sections, there was a discussion, which I was not part of, about which pages need an appearances section and which don't. I've stayed out of it, but Kingclyde seems to know what's up. You could check with him for details.

And, yes, I can abbreviate your name, Jspoel. (I can also misspell it easily, if that helps :P )--Gothemasticator 16:06, January 20, 2011 (UTC)

Posted on Gothemasticator page as well
Dont worry Jspoelstra, I will keep you a head of them since you are taking all the blame ;) as for the appearances section, it depends of the page in question. For example Items and Quest pages it is not part of the layout guide, but for Locations and Character it is (Which actually needs to be removed from the new page creation templates, for those pages that it is not part of the layout). ☣Avatar☣ 03:24, January 22, 2011 (UTC)

Location maps[]

Just to let you know, my maps do have all the names, you just have to hover your mouse over each location like in the Pipboy. Also if you click on them, it will actually take you to that locations page as well. As for the ratios, that is something I wasn't aware of, but this is some what a testing phase to see how they work on the Wiki. ☣Avatar☣ 10:54, January 21, 2011 (UTC)

 • Sorry I left you such a short responce, but I was on my way out the door to work and just checked in before I left. But as I said, the 2 examples I posted are using image mapping, so each location on the map when hovered over with the cursor will display the place name, also it allows me to then link out to the respective page as well. But in regards to the ratios, I have no idea where this 2:1 idea came from, as it is not laid out in the The Vault:Article layout guideline/Location article. But I do agree with you in that a 7:4 or maybe a 3:2 ration would be better in this regards as it keeps the image size down, but not so much that you cant see the location in reference to a larger area, actually doing it that way would also mean less image mapping for me to do.
In regards to the image color and clarity, that comes the fact that the map picture comes from the games files directly. Correcting the image color is a easy matter of placing a colored layer over the image, such as the Pipboy does in the game.
But as I was saying, these 2 are testers to see how they hold up to edits, especially by anons. Pretty much like what I am doing with the 2 quest pages I did with flow charts for the quick walk through section. The reason I used these 2 location was firstly in 188 trading posts talk page there was complaints about the actual location map (it was what kinda gave me the idea to try this out) and Vault 34 due to it being the most popular FNV location page. I want to leave them there for about a month to see how they stand up before posting about it in the forums to see if there is room to move forward with such a idea. ☣Avatar☣ 20:55, January 21, 2011 (UTC)
 • The map by design is not mine, the one in the game files is a complete blank image without location marks on it. Someone else took the time to place all the location marks with the correct marker and used it here. I can see your suggestion having merit, as this would give a reader a immediate visual reference in regards to surrounding locations. However I do have a concern that this could detract from the image mapping option being overlooked. So I suggest running 2 trials side by side, if you pick 2 locations I will do the same as I did for those pages, only with your suggestions incorporated (ratio and major location markers) in those pages. I dont really want to go any more than that in page count for a trial size, as people may start to incorporate it in all the pages and it could turn out to be a disaster.
As for Porter, I will probably update him on the pages that I have implemented these maps on and see if he can make any us of it. ☣Avatar☣
 • I have to admit that your right, it does look a lot better with at least a few locations named in the picture (this is the reason I only do a few and then leave them, that way if changes are needed or suggested I dont have to go through more than needed). As for scaling them down I may do that in a few days, if you view the actual code it aint that easy a job to place the location markers for the pop ups and links, you have to do x,y cords for 2 corners. So changing the image size means that all the cords need to be changed as well.#
As for the perk images, I am a PC user, so doing Dead Money perks aint going to happen until it is released on PC. ☣Avatar☣ 22:23, January 22, 2011 (UTC)
Not sure when I will have time for this, to be honest. Currently I'm focussing on getting FO3 and FNV data exports done, then I'll finally finish the new infobox template and after that I'll likely start working on the mapping tools. I'm a busy man unfortunately :) -- Porter21 (talk) 09:34, January 23, 2011 (UTC)

Acoustic guitar[]

It really should be decapitalized. Uniqueness alone is not a reason to capitalize. "Acoustic guitar" is just the normal everyday words used to describe the object, not a name.--Gothemasticator 04:21, January 24, 2011 (UTC)

Because it isn't a in game shot or anything produced by the developers, it is simply fan art. And fan art is not included in this Wiki, there is actually another wiki for that, just cant remember its name. ☣Avatar☣ 01:34, January 26, 2011 (UTC)

I don't think protecting it will be necessary. For every incorrect "correction" on a page like that, we have another that's genuinely beneficial. Stephanie DeBrule[]

Just a FYI, I have a very strong sneaking suspicion that User:SolidBoss who keeps changing the pics on Stephanie DeBrule, is actually Stephanie herself. Just thought that might give some context to the situation. ☣Avatar☣ 00:41, January 28, 2011 (UTC)

Well I don't know, the profile pic is of Steph and her fella (which cant generally be found by Google). The images that are being uploaded of Steph, cant generally be found by Google as well. Also the user first uploaded images of Stephs boyfriend and added them to his profile, not the kinda action done by someone who has a crush. Then the finally thing that tipped the balance for me, was the image that was uploaded by mistake prior to the cartoon animated picture. It is a .png layer of the .jpg cartoon image and does not contain the image watermark, that can only really be done by someone with the original image file.
As for the project, I am actually working outside the scope of the project. I am fixing all the pages to the layout guide lines, removing all the junk, re-writing all the jumbled garage that makes no sense and re-doing the pictures to correct for the blandness that FNV adds to the images (dont worry, not taking new ones, just downloading what is already there and correcting for color, contrast and adding in some filters if needed. ☣Avatar☣ 01:08, January 28, 2011 (UTC)
The page doesn't require more images of the person, unless it reflect something of interest to the page not already portrayed in other images. Otherwise it just becomes a profile page, if they want they can include them on there own profile page. As for replacing the images of the article page, I have left a message that if replaced they need to be of better quality than the one already there and not grainy. Just thought I would let you know my suspicions as it can provide context to the constant changing of the pics, like most young women she could be self-concious of her image and may not like the picture posted. I have no issues with the current one being changed, as long as it is of sufficient quality to replace the current one. ☣Avatar☣ 01:28, January 28, 2011 (UTC)

Thanks & Suggestions[]

Hey, thank you for uploading the images for quests (like 'we are Legion'). Is it possible to add one for 'We will all go together' and 'Volare!'? They need better images. Thanks. Bobbyb373 19:18, January 29, 2011 (UTC)

Fire ants[]

These now redirect to the FNV pages as worker and soldier variants don't appear in FO3, only in the game files as templates for fire ants and fire ant nest guardians. I thought I got all the redirects sorted, but it seems I missed 2. But it should all be good now, but this is the issue with people using the GECK names instead of the in-game names. ☣Avatar☣ 03:26, January 30, 2011 (UTC)

Grrr, I am really starting to get tired and should be heading off. Its worker fire ant and soldier fire ant that don't appear in FO3, when the names are the other way around they appear in both. But since only FNV pages direct to the fire ant soldier/worker pages, I will leave the redirects in and put some for templates in just in case someone direct a FO3 page to them. ☣Avatar☣ 03:58, January 30, 2011 (UTC)

Tranquility lane[]

If your intrested, you can make the pictures color with this mod. All it does is remove the sepia filter that is in place for the sim. ☣Avatar☣ 00:03, January 31, 2011 (UTC)

Images[]

Yeah, most of them I size down to 800x600 if they are larger. As for the smaller ones I tend to leave there scale, as enlarging them tends to blur the image, I haven't found a good algorithm yet that keeps a good image quality. And what do you mean, by how do you do that. As for good tips, there was another mod for FO3 that actually removes the yellow haze, just waiting for one for FNV. ☣Avatar☣ 01:05, January 31, 2011 (UTC)

Ahhh, now I get you. Well it all depends on the picture and what it needs. Almost all of them I use auto contrast to sharpen up the image, however this tends to leave the image dark, so I bring up the mid-level brightness by pressing ctrl+L and changing the middle figure to between 1.1 and 1.3 depending on what it needs. Then for the tones I either use auto-tone or auto-color (or sometimes both) which does most of the work for me. Then a bit of fine tuning with a color filter (although this is not always needed), this is located under the image tab. image> adjusts> apply filter and then scroll through the color options to see which gives the best results. You have to be careful to get a balance as these filters affect the whole image, for example a deep blue filter will really make the sky stand out, but could kill the tone of the desert. I mostly tend to use either light blue to bring out the sky, only if it doesn't affect the yellow of the desert. Or a light yellow if the desert looks washed out, but again only if it doesn't offset the sky. Hell even some of them I have used a underwater filter with surprising results. Best is to play around and see what makes the overall image better if any of them can. ☣Avatar☣ 01:32, January 31, 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, that's something I plan on getting around to at some point. ☣Avatar☣ 23:14, January 31, 2011 (UTC)

F.M.P. Page Revamp?[]

Can you edit/re-do the File Maintenance Project project page? I can make no sense whatsoever of what images are needed or have already been fixed, and I do believe most of the listed project members are either no longer involved in the project or even in the Vault in some cases.

I'd like to see a new, simple and logical system for logging an entire list of all NPC pages and whether the images present are acceptable or needed, using a table if possible. The only way I have currently of figuring out where images are needed (I'm running 3 and NV now, so I can supply both) is to go to each specific page and check the revision history for your name and an improved image tag. Suffice to say this is so time consuming, and you have already fixed so many images I have yet to find one.

I've noticed you are making break-neck speed on replacing images- above %100 for individual work. However, the file maintenance project is supposed to be utilized to track and organize the effort, and it badly needs clean-up and organization. If you intend to replace every NPC image yourself, then fine, but I am unaware of who makes up the FMP team or where I can help.

Can we make an editable list of 'spoken for' NPC pages, so we aren't snagging the same character as each other at the same time? (This has happened to me a few times, it's frustrating to try and figure out the upload protocol, which I still don't understand, just to find in the 20 min. it took to capture and process the image it has already been updated by someone else)

Not trying to be a pain, I just feel adrift with this project. Pu239AndYou 02:07, February 4, 2011 (UTC)

FMP - Thank you[]

As for where I've been, as soon as you last heard from me, from Dec. 14th to Jan. 5th I was on an extended holiday trip 2763km across the country with my girlfriend visiting her children and ex-husband in a tiny apartment in a tiny town. While that's likely more than you need to know, it was a strenuous trip that took awhile to recover from. Then, within a week of being back home, my computer crashed and was unable to detect a bootable drive partition. Essentially, it thought there was no hard drive. Between that and a later virus attack, getting a copy of New Vegas up and running smoothly, playing that game, helping someone with some GECK mods and other life commitments I had to get done, I have been adding contributions since Jan. 20th, mostly article re-writes and corrections.

As for uploading images to the F.M.P., you have been most patient. However, it has been years since my HTML days and the Wikia text coding methods are entirely new to me. Plus, anytime I ask for explanatory help, I always get it, but the explanations, including yours, are written from a perspective of already knowing how to do it. Since I don't know how, it's been difficult to interpret. I'm going to go ahead and review your instructions on uploading, filing and tagging but WHEN I muck it up, I'll be expecting the backlash of reminders from people. Between Wikia's open-door editing policy allowing vandals and anon editors in, and the massive amount of work being done here, many people seem curt and edgy. I even got into it with Nitty, of all people. There are really good people here at The Vault, but with how many of my contribs have been reverted and criticised, I'd hardly call the place warm and friendly. I apologize for being hesitant, I'm just not comfortable that I understand protocol and don't want to develop a reputation of being clumsy and shoddy, requiring more experienced members to clean up behind me.

Thank you again for your patience. -Pu239AndYou 23:01, February 4, 2011 (UTC)

EDIT:- Just uploaded a capture of John Henry Eden. I couldn't find how to license it to Fallout 3, and I couldn't figure it out from your previous directions. I also categorized it, but the list of categories disappeared when I typed in images. I tried to review the image you suggested of Jenny Stahl to clarify, but I couldn't find a link to the image in the revision history. Please review this addition and my licensing and categorizing, correct it if needed and explain where I went wrong. Sorry to bother you. -Pu239AndYou 02:00, February 5, 2011 (UTC)

Image Praise[]

I must say, after a few draining and depressing conflicts I've had here recently, and your message seemingly disappointed with my efforts, your praise of my John Henry Eden image has re-inflated my spirit in helping out here. I have been away the last few hours, but I will be trying to capture a few more tonight (23:36 currently my time) I also am running New Vegas now, I'm not sure you realized that. I will continue with F03 captures tonight, but do you want me on NV NPCs as well? Please advise if you catch this before you are out the door, and again, thank you. -Pu239AndYou 06:36, February 5, 2011 (UTC)

UPDATE: Just got done uploading Colonel Augustus Autumn. I goofed and forgot to license on upload, how do you do it after? I don't like how processing came out on this one, but FRAPS only saves to cruddy Bitmap format without paying a hefty charge to register..... Let me know what you think.

-- I agree it didn't go well. It wasn't lower resolution, although it is a smaller crop of what I could capture (you said not to use tfc so I had to resort to setscale on my own character to adjust angle)

The lighting in Raven Rock was a single point, harsh blue light. It was pitch dark there, as you noted, there was only the one light source at the Col.'s location, and blue, which as the highest frequency wavelength light compounds the contrast problem. What you thought was low resolution is actually the problems with BMP format with high contrast, both the actual contrast and that added by a single point of non diffused blue light. The Col.'s face wound up with whole pixels standing out that are part of the texture of his face added to give him stubble. The outfit, his jacket, already suffers from low res in the texture, and it's color worsens it. I noticed the color of the normal Enclave officer blouse has that effect is well, it is a similar color. I picked one of my 7 captures of the Col. to work with, the rest were of more traditional, straight forward 'school portrait' layout, apparently that you prefer- I picked the only one that had a different angle, as I felt it had a dynamic look. I don't believe you remember me telling you I have Photoshop 7 that I use daily, and I had to use every trick I knew to tweak the levels of the Col.'s face, jacket and the background separately, as there was no common acceptable margin when I adjusted the entire image- when I altered the color so that his face wouldn't look native american, the jacket took on a strange hue. When I balanced between them, the gray room looked purple. I may have to relocate him using the console to a more favorable spot, what do you think? And I had the image cropped to about his waistline to give him a dignified governmental look, befitting how his character sees himself; his unique jacket has quite a bit of detail and I wanted to show that off. The previous image on that page conformed to a more conventional angle, and he looking like someone's middle-aged uncle that frequents the country club, not the leader of the Encalve. So I suppose you are partial to straight-on headshots; having studied photography I try to employ the Rule of Thirds to get pleasing and natural proportions to complement the image. Altogether I thought the framing of the image to be excellent; however I guess it is not how you want it. The quality is off, I agree, although it is not so much the actual quality of my method as, again, the low res of the outfit, and the spectral highlights of the face being aggravated by the local lighting. I will take another shot at the Col, although I may try to capture a different NPC first, as this difficult shot has apparently made you question my ability. On that subject, I was reminding you that I do now have New Vegas up and running, and there is no reason I cannot capture them as well. As I am now a listed member of the FMP and NV NPCs are images to be updated as well, there also is no reason that I can see that I should not be updating NV images. Although, since you seem to take fault with how I proportion my images, I will be happy to simply upload them to The Vault and NOT replace them on the actual page until you review them, if you wish. Do respond when you have time. Pu239AndYou 00:37, February 8, 2011 (UTC)

I have removed all the incorrect information in the Vault 100 page, also added your images to the Museum of Technology page and corrected the assumptions on the vault number in that page (that should prevent any more incorrect speculation), also updated the main Vault page as well. Nice catch on taking the pics, but if you want a nice tip on taking pics like that instead of clipping into the walls, just click the wall and use the console command disable to make it disappear. But make sure you use clipping as well as sometimes killing the wall can make the floor disappear as well. ☣Avatar☣ 01:23, February 12, 2011 (UTC)

Nifskope[]

Yep, it sure is. Once you have installed Nifskope, you need to decompile Fallout - Meshes.bsa, Fallout - Textures.bsa and Fallout - Textures2.bsa from the Fallout folder into a single new folder. This will be the folder you will work Nifskope from, so you need to set that as the default folder for the textures. To set it up, click on render and then settings at the bottom. Under the render tab of the window that opens up, add a new folder and direct it to the new folder you decompiled all the meshes and textures into. Also while you are there it is worth noting the colors and materials tabs, these will affect the lighting conditions of the render, so you will be coming back to play with those once you have loaded up a model. Once you have done that all you need to do is load up a model, these will be found in the new folder under meshes, for example weapons are located in meshes/weapons/etc. Once you have loaded it up you can play around with the lighting, located under render and while you are there switch off all the options like perspective and axis etc. Now in most cases each model only has 1 texture, but in the case of weapons they have 2 textures, 1 low res and 1 high res. As default they load with the low res texture, I found the easiest way was to delete the low res texture from the folder and rename the high res one to the same name as the low res one. And there you go, a nice image to screen capture. If you have any questions just let me know. ☣Avatar☣ 04:21, February 19, 2011 (UTC)
